Saturday, July 2, 1921 COLE PRICES CUT FROM $455 TO $700 Notice of a reduction of $455 to $700 in the price of Cole Aero-Eight cars was received today by W. O. Lusk, Orange county dealer, from the Cole Motor Car Co., of Indianapolis, Ind. The reduction is of deep significance to the industry and to the motoring world coming as it does at a time when Cole has actually increased car quality and performance. The Cole Aero-Eight, because of notable refinements and improvements that have been added, actually costs $200 more to build. Yet the company, in order that it may play its part in the readjustment of busi-ness price. This new Cole at the lower price is not only the greatest Aero-Eight value ever offered—it stands, in the opinion of Cole engineers, without an equal in the field of better class motor cars. Cole executives believe, and performance of the cars in the hands of Hundreds of owners have served to confirm their judgment, that the new car is the greatest Cole Aero-Eight ever built. J. J. Cole, president of the company, insisted upon the reduced price that the manufacturers should share with buyers sacrifices made necessary by the changed conditions in business. The reduction has had the effect, in the case of Cole at least, of greatly increasing the buying power of the dollar. Such a reduction in price would not be possible except for the enlargement. "UNSPRUNG" WEIGHT MAKES FOR COMFORT So many interested parties have questioned Bob White, the local Franklin dealer, about the benefits of "unsprung" weight, which is one of the big talking points of the Franklin, that he is overloaded with facts on the principle, as he is a firm believer in preparedness. In discussing the "sprung" and "unsprung" weight question, White detailed the greater comfort secured in having practically all the weight above the springs, as in the Franklin which is noted for its easy riding qualities. The car with a great deal of "unsprung" weight, or weight below the springs, is greatly hampered in its efficiency, according to White. As a concrete example he cited the face that an ordinary person, carrying a 30-pound pack on his back, can walk all day and not feel particularly uncomfortable. But just place this weight at the hips, or 15 pounds on each leg, and the lower the weight is carried the harder it is to walk, until, with the weight below the knees it would be agonizing to cover even a few hundred feet. When carried from the shoulder the "springs" of the body are allowed to operate normally, but the lower the weight the more the force of impact, with a consequent loss of "leg power," and it's the same with an automobile, only it has four wheels. This comprehensive comparison is a most convincing sales argument, and though White admits the majority of motor car manufacturers are now giving great consideration to this problem, he claims the Franklin Automobile Co., which pioneered the "sprung" weight theory, has reduced power losses and arsenic content. Such a reduction in price would not be possible except for the enlarged and improved manufacturing facilities and economies that have been established in the Cole factory at Indianapolis, and the large resources of the company. "We believe," said President Cole, "that the Cole-Aero-Eight is as fine a car from every standpoint as can be produced. At the reduced price we believe it is the greatest value on the automobile market." COMMUNITY SING AT BIG CIVIC DINNER A feature of the big civic dinner at the high school domestic science rooms last night in the interest of the C. of C. expansion campaign was the community singing under the direction of Elmer Heldt, Orange-co boy scout executive. Some novel parodies were provided on song-sheets provided each banqueter and everyone joined lustily in this very interesting part of the evening. The song-sheet contained the clever slogans: "Let's put the 'unity' in community," and "Take heed to the tea-kettle—tho up to its neck in hot water, yet it singeth." Some of the parodies, which were written by Mr. Pat Magruder, follow: MUMMY SONG (Tune: There's a Long, Long Trail) It's a short, short life he live here, So let us jazz while we may, With a song for evry moment Of the whole bright day. NEW BUILDING IN COUNTY INCREASES Building figures of seven incorporated towns within Orange county show that the increase in the value of building construction, as shown by permits, this year to date over the same period of 1920 is 23 1-2 per cent. The gain in the seven cities is $769,749. Tight money, material shortage, and labor trouble are items conspicuous by their absence or results to be seen in this resume of Orange-co's building activities during this period. Figures do not lie. The phrase has become a platitude but the figures still continue to tell the truth. Orange county is moving steadily forward. Counting the $300,000 building permits taken out in Anaheim in December, Anaheim continues its claim as the fastest growing city in Orange-co, with a total of more than $750,000 for seven months. Main-st and Delhi, according to the report of Mrs. E. C. Richart. "My dog prevented the burglary, this time," said Mrs. Richart, "by waking me." She did not bark but the slight commotion was enough to frighten the robber away. "Miss Mary Flores, my assistant, and I were alone in the living quarters above the store, as Mr. Richart is ill in Los Angeles." This is the third attempt that has been made to rob the store. The gas station twice has been robbed of gas, oil and other material. "We were afraid to go downstairs when we were awakened between 1 and 2 a.m. When we opened the store we found the first door of the double entrance way had been taken from its hinges. The screws and all were lying on the floor. "The robber, I am sure, watches this store, as he seems always to know when my husband is away. Mr. Richart was absent when a previous effort was made to rob the store." OFFICERS TRAILING MARIJUANA GROWER Under Sheriff E. E. SEEKS LEASES AT LAGUNA That Laguna Beach is regarded highly as a prospective oil field is indicated by the activities of the Richfield Southern Oil Co. in efforts to secure leases. Joe Skidmore is authority for the statement that the company is offering $300 an acre bonus and one-sixth royalty for property in the Arch Beach section. Lot owners in that vicinity are experiencing some of the sensations lot owners at Huntington Beach did. Record owners of lots in the Arch Beach district are receiving communications from Skidmore advising that the oil company desires to secure leases. Skidmore and his mother, Mrs. Catherine Brooks, own about four-fifths of the property the company wants to lease. Both have signed with the company and other lot owners are being requested by Skidmore to get in line and sign up in order that the leases may be completed at once, and drilling operations started. "We feel that it is advisable to enter into good leases with reliable companies at this time instead of waiting for the frantic promotion that will follow the discovery of Comparative figures of building construction values in Orange county of the period from January 1 to June 30, 1920, with those from Jan. 1 to June 30 of this year: Town: 1920 1921 Santa Ana $754,256 $606,916 Anaheim 264,400 458,150 Fullerton 229,647 274,991 Huntington Bch 33,000 609,000 Orange 151,451 118,125 Newport Beach... 130,222 134,570 Brea 50,000 150,000 Totals ... $1,613,003 $2,351,752 Total of 1921 period... $2,351,752 Total of 1920 period... $1,613,003 Increase 1921 over 1920. $738,749 MATTER IN HEWES ESTATE GOES OVER Litigation in connection with a division of the David Hewes estate which was scheduled to come up in Department No. 1 of the superior court yesterday following a continuance from June 17, was again postponed by stipulation of attorneys. The matter will come up again next Friday. Hewes, who at the time of his death was reputed to be worth over $2,000,000, left a will which he made in 1902. OFFICERS TRAILING MARIJUANA GROWER Under Sheriff E. E. French and Motorcycle Officer Frank Stewart were searching today for a Mexican woman living on Edinger-st., who is alleged to have cultivated a marijuana plant in her front yard. She is alleged to have sold the finished product to other Mexicans. They heard stories of a Mexican man and woman who had been smoking the weed and who had created considerable excitement in the neighborhood. The officers found the house where the Mexican woman lives and in looking over the grounds they found a marijuana stalk about 14 feet in height. It was growing in a secluded spot. The officers cut the weed off at its roots and brought it into the sheriff's office to be held as evidence. Sheriff C. E. Jackson went before the supervisors over a year ago and secured the passage of a county ordinance prohibiting the growing and sale of the Mexican plant. Several prosecutions have followed. A Mexican woman who resided at Tustin paid a fine of $25 several months ago for selling the weed. Authorities state that when smoked, particularly by Mexican the weed has the effect of home brew brandy plus. One Mexican arrested by Jackson some months ago tried to convince him that he could lift a locomotive off the track on which it was standing. It took four officers to subdue him.
