DAILY GREETING TO READERS But "it is some justice to ascribe to chance" The wrongs you must expect from ignorance; None can the moulds of their creation choose. We therefore should man's ignorance excuse; When born too low to reach at things sublime, rather their misfortune than their crime—Davenant. The much may be said of the prevailing vogue in skirts—there is no waste of material. That projected bridge across San Francisco Bay will be a bridge of streets, if not of sighs. King Solomon was pre-eminently wise. But it should be remembered that he had 700 aids to wisdom. Selfishness is the arsenic in human nature, poisoning good and generous impulses. Much of tasteless sound pudgment, as well as brilliant attainments, are needed in important diplomatic positions. Mischievous agitation affecting America's relations with any country or group of countries should be frowned upon severely. Trich should be held sacred should not be the subject of coarse jest—religion, marital life, patriotism, honor, and so on. California is attractive to tourists at all times, in summer as well as in winter. Information should go to the world to this effect. Also the cordial invitation to come at any season. "Normaley," it is to be hoped, is well oits way toward the linguistic scrap heap. The only thing that has given the mongrel word any standing is the standing of its author. Circumstantial evidence may seem absolutely conclusive, and yet in reevitably there is more or less halting while action by Congress is pending. There cannot be the fulness of return to economic normal until this legislation is consummated, so that business and industry may adjust themselves to whatever enactments Congress may make. Should there be reasonable expedition in Congress, early fall should see both tariff and tax revision consummated. "MIRACLE MAN" AUTHOR HONNORED IN DEATH George Loane Tucker, who has just passed into eternity, leaves a splendid monument to his integrity and high ideals as author and playwright. He was the author of a screen production admittedly among the best and most elevating that ever has been produced—"The Miracle Man." This great picture, deservedly ranked as a classic, has become a recognized standard of excellence in filmdom. When the reformer would point to the reform that he would have in the quality of pictures, he names "The Miracle Man" as the apex of excellence. While there has been ground for criticism of some types of screen presentations, yet, in fairness it should be said that there have been and are many great, stirring, inspiring films, without taint of uncleanliness. Numbered among these, taking high rank, is "The Miracle May." George Loane Tucker's memory ever should be fragrant for the good influence he has shed among millions thru this child of his brain and heart. MEMORIALS TO MARSHALL. The only thing that has given the mongrel word any standing is the standing of its author. Circumstantial evidence may seem absolutely conclusive, and yet in reality be as false as hell. No human being ever should be sent to death on evidence wholly circumstantial. California is destined to be a form center of "white coal" development in future. Possibilities of hydro-electric expansion are so great and so wonderful as to stagger the imagination. John Burroughs' name is not pealed and chimed on all the tongues of fame," but with quiet serenity, like the man himself, the glory of his simple life and his noble contributions to natural history and to welcome philosophy will endure. The increased zeal in behalf of higher education, manifested by the south of the land since the end of World War, is an exceedinglyomen. Now, public spirit should lead to this zeal and should support the equipment and equitably paid teachers. So should come when the between the United States should become as cordial the United States and when there should be mutual confidence between a nation and the other republic as between this country and the Slaves. The United States needs, it is estimated, 1,250,000 more dwellings than it has. Before it gets this vast number of new houses it will need more. Even though building should become much brisker all over the country, it would require many years to get caught up with the demand and to meet the actual housing needs. Bribery of players or anyone connected with baseball is made a felony in California by the terms of a law recently enacted by the legislature. The law should be used at the first sign of crookedness in the game anywhere in this state. GOLD DISCOVERER A sturdy California pioneer, who looms in history, was James W. Marshall, whose discovery of gold in gold in California was an epochal event of the 19th century. All that pertains to the life and achievements of this trail blazer in the realm of golden treasure is of interest. Native Daughters and Native Sons of the Golden West have done well in exerting themselves to preserve relics of the discoverer of gold. His cabin and blacksmith shop, in El Dorado county, have been restored to their oldtime conditions and have been dedicated as memorials to Marshall. That discovery has had profound influence, not only upon California and the West, but upon the world. California has given to the world hundreds of millions of dollars of produced gold, and its stores are far from exhausted. Following the discovery of the precious metal, came the grand rush of '49 and the early '50's—the most spectacular quest of treasure, perhaps, in the history of mankind. That picturesque period should be memorialized, and its history should be written and stressed with fidelity. It brought this state into the eyes of the world, and it has been ever since—not only for its gold but for its manifold other riches—one of the most conspicuous regions on the face of the globe. SAN FRANCISCO BRIDGE IS PROJECTED San Francisco has taken up in earnest the project for bridging San Francisco Bay. Eninent engineers pronounce its feasible. Need of this structure long has been felt. But particularly of late has the traffic congestion become such that the Bay City is forced, by stress of circumstances, as it were, to evolve plans for relief. Especially pressing is the problem of automobile traffic. The bay ferries, on holidays and special occasions, are overwhelmed, requiring long and exasperating delays in crossing the bay. Growth of San Francisco, Oakland and other cities and towns about the bay, requires means of rapid transit across this neck of water. A mammoth bridge is the only solution practicable. While bridging the bay long has been under discussion, yet not before has the movement taken on such definite and practical form as at present. That it will be constructed, either from public funds voted by the cities and counties immediately affected, or by private capital, seems to be a foregone conclusion. Volume of traffic fully justifies the requisite outlay to throw a gigantic passageway across the picturesque body of water. The American farmer needs an enlarged foreign market for his products. WANT TO READ BOOK MOVIE IS PICTURING "It is interesting to note how the showing at a local motion picture house of a film adapted from a book will affect the demand for that book" today stated Miss J. Elliza-beth Calnon of the Anaheim public library. "It isn't just among the grownups that the interest is stimulated," she continued, "but the children are affected also, and when Jackie Coogan appeared in 'Peck's Bad Boy,' we had call after call for the book, which, by the way, we don't happen to have in the library. It is interesting to see the looks of anticipation when the youngsters called for the book, and the disappointment which followed our telling them we didn't have it." "Black Beauty" was another film that aroused the interest of the children in the book and we could hardly supply the demand for copies of the story, right after the film was shown here. She then related how the older patrons of the films were affected at the time of the showing of "The Inside of the Cup" by Winston Churchill, the local film fans called for the book almost daily. In the same manner, "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" proved even more popular than when it was first published, while at the time that "Broken Blossoms" was issued by Griffith, the book, "Lime House Nights" by Thomas Burke was called for many times, because the story of the film was taken from the book. Zane Grey's novels dealing with western life are always popular with a certain class of readers but when a picurization of one is to be shown and after its showing, there is an unprecedented demand for the book. Other books which have come into a renewed popularity after being presente on the screen, include Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court." "Treasure Island," by Stevenson, and Cooper's "Last of the Mohicans." According to Miss Calman's observations, the books are called for after a film is shown more frequently. the number plate so that it can be seen at night from 50 feet to the rear? Scott Willmarth et al., to vacate and abandon certain alleys in the second road district was set for hearing for July 19, 1921, at 10 a.m. Helea Craemer, deputy county auditor, was appointed to prepare a report of the financial transactions of Orange-co and Hazel Shields was appointed as assistant. A bridge over Coyote Creek was accepted. It was ordered that Los Angeles-co put two 19 foot bents on east end of bridge over Coyote Creek. Deimling, district manager of the So. Callif. Edison Co., who said the company is better prepared this year than last year to handle the summer load and that there have been several natural factors contributing to power conservation. "The month of May was the lightest pumping mouth in the history of the Orange-co district, I believe, due to the April storms," he said. "The call for power usually has come early in the year. This year the late storms aided us to increase water storage, while practically eliminating the necessity of the rancher to use his pump. "Huntington lake contains 79,000 acre feet of water and the run off from the mountains is not completed. This storage total stands as a record over many years." The San Joaquin valley is well served plants year-round. Zane Greys novels dealing with western life are always popular with a certain class of readers but when a picurization of one is to be shown and after its showing, there is an unprecedented demand for the book. Other books which have come into a renewed popularity after being present on the screen, include Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court," "Treasure Island," by Stevenson, and Cooper's "Last of the Mohicans." According to Miss Calman's observations, the books are called for after a film is shown more frequently than before. Her explanation of the fact being that when people read the story first they fail to enjoy the play, but seeing the latter acts as a stimulant to their interest and they read the book with renewed enjoyment. AUTO CLUB ISSUES DONT'S TO AUTOISTS This is the season when police authorities are "pinching" motorists who evade the law. Auto Club officials of So. Calif., in a desire to help motorists as far as possible, issue the following list of suggestions: Are your number plates securely fastened to the front and rear of your car? Are they least 16 inches above the ground? Are they fastened so as to prevent them swinging? Are either of the number plates so mutilated so as to render them unintelligible? Is either number plate obstructed by a bumper or tire carrier? Are the names of the registered and legal owners signer on your certificate of registration? If the type of headlight lens used requires a tilting of the headlamps, are your lamps si tilted?
