Saturday, June 18, 1921 OOD WEATHER FOR YOSEMITE TOURISTS Good news for motorists who intend to include a trip into the Yosemite in their summer's touring. According to a communication from Foster Curry, of Camp Curry, mother conditions in the mountains more settled at the present than they have been for the past six years. After the rains of May, the flowers and vegetation in general are profuse and luxuriant and, in its early days, has giveniry prospect of being an ideal vacation month in the park. Both the Wawona and Big Oak it roads entering the park from south and west respectively, acceding to Curry, are in better shape at any time in years. Reports the courthouse road as far as Zel Green indicates that this site is also very satisfactory and be recommended to motorists. Tourists are urged to take the cut-road to the left at Hazel Green proceed to Crane Flat on the Oak Flat road instead of coming in thru the Merced Grove of Trees. With these three routes now open in good condition, there is an opportunity for automobilists to enter into the park from one route leave by another, thereby en-ing a diversified scenery and at same time assisting in the up-put of the hoods by more uniformly attributing travel. Curry reports usually heavy travel in the valley with good weather come to stay for a record in the matter of tourists entering the park. NEW PAIGE AGENCY OPEN FOR BUSINESS S. B. Hubbell, experienced automobile dealer of Long Beach, who recently purchased the Paige agency this territory from Booth and Anzie, opened his salesroom today—the former Ford garage building Cypress and Los Angeles-sts, re-fully purchased by Sam Kraemer. BUILDING ANOTHER MODEL FOR BUICK Mr. Wm. Goodrum, of the Anaheim Auto Co., Buick distributors, has been advised that within 30 to 60 days the Buick Motor Co. will announce a four-cylinder model. This is not official as yet, as the factory has not completed experiments but within a short time it will be duly announced. Mr. Goodrum also states that he is enjoying a greater business than ever before. The daily sales for the first 10 days in June averaged two cars a day, 21 cars being sold in that period. Furthermore, so many orders came in for closed models that the supply on hand soon was exhausted and orders are now being taken for deliveries in rotation. This is gratifying news to the general public, business men, and merchants for the reason that it shows there is an optimistic feeling in the air. This tremendous demand is not local. All of the dealers thrust out the Pacific coast territory state that the 1922 Buick at the present price is looked upon as the best automobile value offered today, and they are kept busy taking orders. FORD RIVER ROUGE PLANT 8TH WONDER Ford's new River Rouge plant is one of the industrial wonders of the world. Not only is it the largest plant of its kind now, but it is being so developed that it will have almost unlimited possibilities for the future. Today it is the crowning achievement of the automotive industry. Even the people in Detroit hardly realize the extent to which Henry Ford has developed his Rogue River properties. The plant already spreads over 356 acres, and within three years it will cover 1000 acres, with a total cost of about $70,000,000. The plant is located on the River Rouge, 5 miles below the center of Detroit. Detroit's entire industrial development is being redirected as the re-who operates machines on the metal into the mold is carried along the line and finally broken open part. FROM Oakland to Reno in 10 Hrs. 50 Minutes From Oakland to Reno in ten hrs. 50 minutes, is the latest record The Sheridan. This remarkable time was made for the difficult Placerville road in a stock model Sheridan four ring car piloted by G. A. Hebert. Hebert, who is sales manager of P. K. Webster Co., Inc., Sheridan lers at Oakland, was checked out midnight from the offices of the ital Telegraph Company; just 10 hrs and 50 minutes later, he was locked in, by the Postal-Telegraph specials at Reno, New. On this sensational run, Hebert a accompanied by Floyd Linkey, Reno, Al Magrath of Oakland, and all Sheridan, a newspaper man of Francisco. Hebert recently told Captin Eddie Bickenbacker that he could drive in Oakland to Reno, over the most frequent Placeville route, in less twelve hours. The famous ace skepical, so to prove his theHebert undertook the record as soon as the road was announced open for the season. AD TO BE BACK TEMPERATURE OF 116 auto tourists from Phoenix, Ariz, popped in Fullerton yesterday on DEVELOPED THAT IT WILL HAVE ALMOST unlimited possibilities for the future. Today it is the crowning-achievement of the automotive industry. Detroit's entire industrial development is being redirected as the result of Ford's Rouge activities. The government is dredging the River in a manner that will add 8 miles to the city's dock facilities. Ford is employing water transportation to the utmost in his plans. Ships from his ore and timber lands will be able to unload directly at the-plant. Ford's railroad also taps the new plant, and over it he receives coal and sand from his own properties. Regardless of certain questions concerning the economic wisdom of this gigantic development, the fact is unchallenged that at the River Rogue is taking place one of the industrial marvels of American history; an undertaking that, when completed, will give employment to 60,000 men. At the River Rogue the whole series of costly steps between first melting of the ore in blast furnaces to pouring of refined steel into cast parts has been eliminated. Metal is melted but once. While molten, it is purified, mixed with desired alloys and cast for the first and last time into the desired part. When the metal is released from blast furnaces it is gathered in caldrons and carried over tracks to another furnace where it is mixed with alloys. It is then run into smaller ladels, taken to the foundry and poured into automobile and tractor parts. Molds are carried on an endless chain in the foundry past a man with a-movable ladel. When the plant is completed there will be 20 of these endless chains carrying modls. One blast furnace is now in operation. Three more are being constructed. Four others are planned. There are now in operation 122 coke ovens, each with a capacity of 15 tons of coal. The ovens produce daily from the coal 1,700 tons of coke, 18,000,000 cubic feet of gas, 4,000 gallons of benzol, 16,000 gallons of tar and 20 tons of ammonium sulphate. Benzol is sold to the public as a motor fuel. Gas was formerly sold for general use in Detroit, but pipe lines have been constructed to Highland Park, 10 miles away, and it is there used as a fuel. The present battery of ovens will be duplicated. A number of interesting economics are noted at the plant. Blast furnaces are hooded, and gases arising in that process are led to the power house for use as fuel. Every exhaust pipe is hooded and the steam used in heating or condensed for the boilers. Boilers develop 26,000 horsepower, and are said to be another of the "largest in the world features" of the plant. Though far from complete, the River Rouge plant already turns out 250 tractors and 500 tons of pig iron a day. It is said the Fords will later market metal on a considerable scale—The Gargoyle. In certain states of Mexico it is illegal to carry firearms. Several residents do so, however, for medicinal purposes.
