JUNIOR COLLEGE IDEA STEADILY GROWING Dean Boyce Reviews Status of Junior Colleges at Commencements Ladies and Gentlemen: You will be interested to know that the Junior College idea is growing steadily. There are approximately 100 Junior Colleges in the United States, of which California has twenty and Orange County two. Almost half of the Junior Colleges in states other than California have been formed by dropping the Junior age Senior years from small private colleges. We can expect many changes of this sort in the next decade. United States Commissioner of Education, Claxton, says "there are at least 250 colleges in the United States which might well become Junior Colleges and concentrate all their means, men, money and equipment or doing in the largest and most effective way possible the work of the freshmen and sophomore years." A bill providing for the complete districting of Junior Colleges with a system of liberal state support, has been passed by our California state legislature and is now before the Governor for his signature. This may well be considered as an indication of the future educational policy of California. Indeed the probable increase of both public and private Junior Colleges throughout the country and the increasing interest shown in these institutions point to the possibility of the Junior College speedily becoming a regularly established part of our educational system. Some of us would prefer to see the high school course expanded two years and a system of junior high schools established. But the indications are that this will not be the case, at least in the immediate future. The present enrollment of Junior College student in the twenty colleges of this state is approximately 2000. There will be a great increase next year, for, on the one hand the four year institutions are crowded beyond their capacities and have resorted to rigid policies of limitation; on the other hand the Junior Colleges are better equipped and better established and consequently are more in favor. In our own school we are practically certain of a student body next year one hundred strong, and the enrollment will probably run to more than 125. The value of the Junior College to this district is greater than many of our people have supposed. Were we to put aside all the personal, family and community advantages gained by keeping seventy-five to one hundred young people for two years after their graduation from high school, and put the matter on a purely financial basis and the gain would be quite worth while. Taken by and large, I judge the difference between maintaining a son or daughter in the home and maintaining that same son or daughter away from home in College or University would run close to $500 a year. Granted that eighty of our own students will be in College here next year the net gain to the district, will be $40,000. Another advantage of no small degree is the inducement that the College is offering to outsiders to settle in this vicinity. Inquiries are frequently coming, prompted by such a consideration. Fullerton bids fair to become a splendid educational center. A Junior College with 300 students and with a wide range of courses both academic and specialized, to meet the demands of our people and our day is probable within the next decade. In athletics for both men and women we have acquitted ourselves with credit; we have staged our first May Day Festival with what success most of you know, for you were present. It is likely that this will become an annual Junior College event. In debating we won in each of the three contests in which we entered. The students have become interested in the College and some effective work has been done by them in the campaign for a greater Junior College. A student Y. W. C. A. has been organized among the women of the College and they have raised money to send their President for next year, Miss Gladys Fitz, to the State Y. M. C. A. Convention at Asilomar. One of the tests which is often applied to an institution of learning is the number of students it sends on to higher institutions. Of the total number of graduates of the public Junior Colleges of the United States during the last three years seventy-three per cent are continuing their work in a higher institution. Of the seventy-two who have graduated from the Fullerton Junior College, sixty-one have gone on to College, University or Normal school, which is better than eighty per cent. OUR JUNIOR COLLEGE Dr. Newlin Gilres His Impressions After a Year's Acquaintance With the College Having spent much of my life in college and university work, I can view the Junior College in the light of history and experience. I am glad to say that I have been much pleased and encouraged by what I have seen in Fullerton Junior College. I can see many things that need to be improved, but many of these improvements will come with the natural growth. I never have known an institution where changes were not needed. Where the numbers are smaller each student gets individual and personal attention. It is a fact that in many of the larger institutions the Freshmen and Sophomores are almost totally ignored. A student that is a unit; here he is a person. We need to increase the corporate life of the College. This is being done by the organization of an Alumni Association and by the promotion of college teams in athletics, debating and oratory. Our library and laboratory facilities already quite good; and up to date, are every year rapidly increasing in efficiency and usefulness. There is and ought to be a difference in methods of instruction in High School and college. The advance from High School to College is gradual, but the difference is great enough to be appreciated by any one who tries it. The College spirit must be emphasized and College acerum encouraged. I see an opportunity for scores of young men and young women to get an introduction to higher education. PORTunity of a real saving and our new and greatly reduced prices are the result. "For a high grade quality car," continues Pfetter, "I know that the Saxon-Duplex offers one of the greatest values on the market today." RYS. TO START FIGHT ON KING TAX BILL. I see an opportunity for scores of young men and young women to get an introduction to higher education, who never could get it except for the Junior College. I am greatly impressed with this opening and would like to call the attention of all parents and High School students from the entering grades to the Seniors, that they plan their courses of study to fit into the Junior College Worc. My experience leads me to believe that no student can do better than to take the first two years of his college course at a Junior College such as ours is, in equipment, faculty, and general educational atmosphere. REPORT GARDNER IS NOW IN CALIFORNIA BULLETIN TACOMA, Washington, June 10.—A long distance telephone message from Chief of Police Hughes at Centralia to the local police today stated that Roy Gardner, mail bandit, had been arrested by him. No further details were given. SACRAMENTO, June 16.—Northern California cities joined in the hunt for Roy Gardner, twice escaped mail robber, today, following word from U. S. marshal's office-in San Francisco that a man answering Gardner's description passed through Hamilton City this morning with another man in a Chandler Dispatch automobile. All roads leading into Sacramento are being watched by heavily armed police and sheriff's office operatives. The marshal at Hamilton City reported to Deputy U.S. Marshal Mulhall, from whom Gardner escaped. Mulhall notified police and the sheriff's office hehe and the warning was also spread to Chico, Oroville and other towns. The description furnished by the marshal at Hamilton City is said by Mulhall to tally with Gardner's appearance when he handcuffed his captors in their state room on the train taking him to McNeill's Island and with George Pyron, another prisoner, fled near Castle Rock, Wash. Belief has been expressed here by criminologists that Gardner has been heading for here to uncover money ferred at the request of Tex Rickard, who informed the commission that he was "vitally interested." SAXON DROPS $400 TO $500 SINCE JAN. The Saxon Moton Car Corp., of Detroit, is announcing sweeping price reductions on all models. Open and closed models are now $400 to $500 less than they were last year. In January Saxon-Duplex prices dropped from $220 to $320. Now with the additional reduction of $180 the new prices are $400 to $500 under 1920 prices. C. A. Pfeffer, president of the Saxon Motor Car Corp., gave out the following statement: "The Saxon Company having no large costly inventory on hand is in a position to give the public the benefit of every decrease in the cost of raw materials. Buying as we have been for some time, in the open market, we are getting all materials at the very lowest prices thus we can list our cars accordingly and the public saves the difference. Last January when raw material took their first drop Saxon-Duplex prices also dropped immediately.
