BETTER CULL OUT BOARDER HENS NOW
The difference between loss and profit in producing eggs is frequently in the feed fed the loafers. The elimination of non-producing hens from the laying flock must be considered as a necessary feature of sound poultry management. If the poultrymen of Orange-co, were to eliminate 25 to 40 per cent of their birds by the proper culling methods the egg yield would not be greatly dessened and the profit would be materially increased. Many flocks which are now producing litter or no profit would become profitable enterprises. If the non-reducers and poor producers were eliminated.
The trap nest is, of course, the only absolutely accurate method of picking the layers, but it is scarcely practicable for the general farmer. It is the purpose of this article to indicate the practical points to be considered in culling. All these points are important, but no one of them should be emphasized to the exclusion of others.
TIME FOR CULLING. Normally the best period for culling is the after part of June, July and August, and the early part of September. However, in the case of lights, the cycle of the hen is moved ahead from a month to six weeks.
CONSTITUTION AND HEALTH. The best layers are naturally birds of good vitality and health. Fowls of strong constitution are alert and active, the beak is short and plump, the eyes bright, and the comb, even if not large, must be of fine texture and good red color. All specimens that are scrawny, undersized, with long, thin beak and crow head, weak on the legs light in weight, excessively fat, and those with dull eyes, pale shriveled combs, and inactive disposition should be eliminated.
GAPACITY. The hen that lays a large number of eggs must have a large capacity. This is indicated by long keel (breast bone) and a long neck and wide body. The distance from the pelvic bones to the end of the breast bone should not be less than three or four fingers. A good width across the abdomen from the bs on one side to the ribs on the her side is also desirable. The abm itself should be soft and pilaed. The fowl with tightly drawn base; 4, from th shanks beginning at the toes and leaving the back of the hook the last. As productivity lessens, the color returns. During the months of greatest production the shanks and beak may become very pale while during the time of least productivity the shanks, beak, and skin (most easily examined at the vent) may take on a deep yellow color.
Certain grains, such as yellow Indian corn and also abundance of green feed probably influence the color of the shanks, beak and skin to a certain extent.
Since it takes several weeks after the hen begins laying before the yellow in the legs disappears, a fowl which has recently commenced to lay may have deep yellow legs. Her condition should be determined by the physical condition of the vent which should be loose and moist.
Pale legs and beak with a dry, puckered vent would indicate a fowl which had been laying heavily but had very recently started to rest.
MOULT. The best laying fowls must lay over a longer period than the poor layers. Trap next records show that the poor layers stop laying earlier in the summer than the good layers. The fowl which ceases to lay and commences to mount in June, July and August is usually below the average. A fowl which mounts in September is usually average for the cock; while fowls which do not commence to mount until later are usually above the average and unquestionably are profitable birds. The good layers will lay even after they have commence to mount.
COMB CHANGES. When a hen is laying, her comb is comparatively large, red and warm to the touch. The wattle is comparatively large and warm, apparently due to the functioning of the ovary.
BROODING. Very often a White Leghorn hen which shown signs of broodiness does so time and time again.
TEMPERAMENT. A good layer is vigorous and active. She is a bushler and works all the time. Move over she sings at her work and is usually gentle and sociable.
Keep in mind that you may find exceptions to practically every rule. To cull intelligently, a poultryman must of necessity use his own judgment.
PULLETS. A flock of pullets should base; 4, from th shanks beginning at the toes and leaving the back of the hook the last. As productivity lessens, the color returns. During the months of greatest production the shanks and beak may become very pale while during the time of least productivity the shanks, beak, and skin (most easily examined at the vent) may take on a deep yellow color.

AMAL. IS EXPECTING 600-BARREL WELL.
Huntington Beach
The Amalgamated Oil Co. has Huntington 1-A drilled to 3000 feet and is balling the well to bring it in. If the water has been shut off this well should do around 600 barrels. Huntington No. 2 is drilling deeper at 2445. Fowler No. 1 is rigging up and No. 1 set 6 inch at 3181. Pearce No. 1 started drill 10 days ago and shows 2400-feet of hole.
Late yesterday drill to bring in the Bolsa Oil No. 1 started. Deepened to 2257 the well has shown considerable gas and oil. It is understood that a big well is not expected. From indications it will probably run around 300 or 350. Lumber is on the ground for No. 2.
On drilling out the cement the Blue Shale Oil & Mining Asan, well No. 1 went on 6 feet and struck a second water sand and more water.
As this report being made up the Edens Syndicate No. 1 was balling to bring in. Judging from the way the well has been acting nothing over 400 barrels at the most can be expected. The rig for Edens No. 2 is up.
Striking oil in quantity at regular intervals of from 40 to 75 feet all the way down the Fidelity Oil Co., stopped drilling at 2100 and set pipe at 2045.
The proeprty and holdings of the Huntington Crude Oil Co. have been taken over by the McEntyre Bros., of Long Beach. The new owners have contracted with the Orang-co. Drilling Co. to drill the well and the work will commence et once.
The Huntington Sure Shot is the latest concern in the field. The new company is putting up a rig songside of the Huntington National on a small city lot, its a crime to plant derricks as thick as some of the operators are doing at Huntington Beach. The Sure Shot Co. has not room enough to build the rig, the sawing and framing of the lumber being done on the street.
At 2450 feet the Miller Syndicate struck some nice brown shales a formation not struck in this part of the field at any such depth. It will be remembered that the Miller Syndicate was formerly Venture No. 2.
After months of litigation and delays the Motor Oil and Refining Co. began drilling.

GOV., TELLS.WHY HE SIGNED TENURE BILL.
Statement by Governor Wm.D.Stephens regarding teachers tenure and retirement bills.
I have signed A.B.378 known as the teachers tenure bill. It does not put teachers under the civil service commission as has been alleged nor does it prevent discharge of teachers as has been reported.
It is a worthy measure providing that in schools when there are eight or more teachers, the school board may after two years efficient and praiseworthy service of a teacher, declare her to be a permanent teacher, and that hereafter no permanent teacher shall be discharged without cause.
Charges relating to immoral or unprofessional conduct, incompetence evident unfitness for teaching, persistent violation of or refusal to obey the school laws of California, or reasonable rules prescribed for the government or public schools must be filed with the school board and satisfy determines the matter; however, an school board alone can try the case.A majority vote of the school board appeal can be taken to the court; butly upon the question of the irregularity of the proceedings and not upon the facts in the case.
The school alone determines the facts, and the verdict.Any teacher found guilty of the charges by a majority of the board can be charged by a majority vote of one same board. The there is nothing unusual or harmful in this measureonly good for the public and for the teachers will result.

After months of litigation and delays the Motor Oil and Refining Co. has got itself in shape legally and financially to begin operations. The McKeon Drilling Co. has taken the contract to drill the well and has started rigging up.
Preparations are being made to bring in Moser Special No. 1. Drilled to 3250 this well has shown a lot of "pep" and should make good. Predictions place the production around 450 barrels. Drilling at No. 2 has made splendid progress, 2200 feet having been drilled in 10 days.
Mitey-Keck No. 2 was given every chance to make something as a producer but has failed to do more than 40 or 50 barrels, in fact the production came only in little spurts of a few barrels at a time. Rigging is now going forward to deepen the well from 2590. No. 1 is standing cemented at 2590. No. 3 is building rig and No. 4 is rigging up.
Sanding up badly the Pantages Huntington went off production a few days after it came in a 350 barrel well. Washing and circulating the sand out is now in progress.
The Republic Petroleum No. 1 failed to make much of a producer as a flowing well. The tubing and rods were put in and now the well is making about 250 barrels. It is one of the field's deep producers, the oil coming from 3685.
In addition to getting the bulk of the production developed at Huntington Beach the Standard Oil Co. is doing the bulk of the development work. The Standard has 20 wells drilling. Of special interest is the Torrance well now drilling at 4125, the deepest well now drilling in the field. Standard oil operations include the following: A-5 cemented at 2970, A-7 testing water at 2200, A-8 drilling at 2550, A-10 drilling at 2725, A-11 drilling at 1100, A-13 building rig and A-14 setting boilers. B-2 is drilling at 3000, B-3 at 2500 and B-4 is drilling at 1550, C-1 shows 2250 feet. D-1 is down 2400. E-1 is at 2400, and E-2 is building rig. On the Bolsa Chica lease No. 2 is standing cemented at 2770, and No. 3 at 2570, Jones Community No. 1 is drilling at 2800 and No. 2 has been located. Surf No. 1 is being tested out at 3760 and Thompson No. 1 spudded in and made 1000 feet.
At 3180 the State Consolidated No. 1 will be given a production test. If the well falls down it will be drilled deeper.
Of the independents the Sun Oil Co. is drilling the largest number of wells Some criticism has been expressed on
UNION DRILLS 30
PLAC.-RICH.WELLS
The Union Oil Co. continues to be the heavy developing company in the Placentia-Richfield district, with 10 wells drilling. The Chapman property shows 5 wells drilling, the largest number of wells on the half dozen or more leases. Chapman No. 5 is 4056 ft. in oil sand, No. 10 is 3045 in shale and shell, No. 11 is 3025 cemented, No. 12 is 3225 is also standing cemented. No./19 is a new well drilling at 1200 in conglomerate.
Thompson-Goodwin No. 3 is rigged up ready to start drilling. MeFadden No. 2 is in the oil sand at 3180, also J. W.Newell No.3 at 3250.Dickson No.1 struck the grey sand at 3865 and is standing.C &

down 2400. E-1 is at 2400, and E. is building rig.
At 2180 the State Consolidated No. 1 will be given a production test. If the well falls down it will be drilled deeper.
Of the independents the Sun Oil Co. is drilling the largest number of wells Some criticism has been expressed on a policy of going ahead with so many wells and having no production. No. 1 is drilling at 2485 but is showing little or no oil. No. 2 is a rig standing. At No. 3 the cement is being drilled out and a test will be made for water this week. No. 4 spudded in a few days ago and shows 1800 feet.
With coming in of Texcal No. 1 a 500 barrel well this company is now the third producing company in the field. Texcal No. 1 was drilled to 2990 and came in at 509 and is holding to this figure steadily. No. 2 is drilling in the brown shale at 2900 and it looks very good.
The Union Oil Co. will test out the south side of the Newlands property, Newlands No. 2 is up and is being rigged for drilling. Copeland No. 1 deepened from 2924 to 3140 is a distinct disappointment, it being a water well Tests are being made to locate the water.

At the all day meeting at the home of Mrs White last Tuesday it was decided to divide the membership of the class into five groups or units with a leader for each unit The unit leaders are Mrs Comwell, Mrs Felton,Perry Mathis,Mrs Stanfield and Mrs Edward Bigelow.
With a class as large as the Fidelig is now it is almost impossible for one person to keep in close touch with each member so the responsibility is divided among the five units Plans are being worked out so that the matter of checking attendance reports of illness calls on new people etc., may be made thru the units.
The next all day meeting of the class will be held on Wednesday June 22nd at the home of Mrs Geo Tedrick near Orange with Mrs Cornwell's unit as hostesses.
While the social life of the class means much yet the whole organization centers around the class hour from 9:30 to 10:50 every Sunday morning One member of the class counts the class hour on Sunday under the teaching of Mrs.W.A Brown of such value that she driver in from Mojeska's home on Sunday morning to be in attendance.

B. No. 2 is in oil sand at 3200. No. 1 at 4032 is in the sand but is held up with a fishing job. Stern No. 1 in the oil sand at 3420 looks like a good well.
Chapman No. 6, one of the biggest wells brought in in the Richfield district is falling in production. The big well came in a month ago at 3300 barrels and is now making a little better than 2900. The famous No. 1 after producing for more than two years is still doing better than 600 bbls.
Richfield drilling still attracts attention. The Wonder Co. Ltd. drilling on the Kraemer home place set 15 1-2 in. at 665 and drilled 900 ft. in a week. As much of the drilling was thru hard conglomerate, the work merits mention. In one 24 hour run 300 feet of hole was made.
