SOCIETY: Clubs: Lodges: Churches SHOWER MISS SCHUMACHER Mrs. Welcome M. Ward and mother, Mrs. H. K. Boyd, entertained last evening with a surprise miscellaneous guest in honor of Miss Frances Macher, a June bride-elect. That the surprise be complete, the delightful affair was held at the home of the honoree's mother, Mrs. Frank S. Gates, N. Claudina-st. Miss Schumacher was invited out for the early part of the evening, and during her absence the guests arrived. They remained in the bedroom until Miss Schumacher came into the house, and when she opened the door everyone shouted "surprise." She was completely overcome, but soon regained her composure, and the merriment of the evening began. The many packages for the honored guest were hidden in different places in the dining and living rooms, and a merry hunt was begun. As each gift was found it was placed in the middle of the floor, and when all were found, the bride-elect opened them. They were found to contain many very beautiful things which will find a place in the home to be established by the young couple. Music was enjoyed, with vocal solos by Mrs. Stafford Sims and Mr. Fred Scott. Late in the evening refreshments of ice cream and cakes were served. For this part of the evening the young ladies were joined by Messrs. Welcome M. Ward, Fred Scott, William Schumacher and Lloyd Schrode. Life is gloomy, life is glad; Life is a mixture, good and bad; And whether you scold or whether you sing Depends on the way you take the thing. It's long been commonly understood That the good die young and the young die good; But life's worth living, clay or gold; Let's live just to prove that the good die old; Life has many and varied ends, But the best that it brings is the love of friends. Love is the pulse of heart and brain; No man with friends has lived in vain. And so together we'll laugh and quaff. For the sake of the wheat,we'll take the chaff. Yesterday's gone, tomorrow's not here; Today is the middle of the whole round year. Oh,the bad is good, and the good is better. And the best is the best of all, The past and the future are nowhere near! Today's all right, let's give it a cheer! ANON. The Home o "BY ANAHEIM Central Oil Co. Drills Three Whittier Wells Whittier Field The Central Oil Co. is drilling three wells on its properties at Whittier. One well No. 68, will have a lot to do with future development work of the Central. This well is showing a sand that looks good at 1775 feet, and should it be a producing sand twenty wells will be drilled. No. 67 is in shale at 1450, and No. 69 is showing good in the oil sand at 1675. In spite of the fact that nothing encouraging has been struck by the Shell Co., drilling at 3935 in Turnbull canyon at Hart No. 1, drilling is to go on. A deep test well will be drilled before abandonment. The Sou. Cat. Oil Co.'s Sanderson No. 1 is now drilling in hard shell at 1365, and this hard shell is showing quite a bit of oil. Indications now warrant the prediction of at least a small well. The Standard Oil Co. is cleaning out at Bastanchury No. 5 and will attempt to put this well back on production. No. 5 was drilled to better 5000 feet by the Union and at one time this well flowed at the rate of 500 barrels, but only for a few hours. Bastanchury No. 1 is drilling at 2800 and going nicely. On the Murphy-Coyote the Standard is cleaning out No. 70 at 4450. No. 85 and 84 stand cemented, and No. 86 a new well is drilling at 1500 feet. On the old Emery lease the Standard has three wells standing cemented, Nos. 31, 77, and 38 from 32 to 4000 feet.
