This state grows 96 per cent of the nation's entire crop of walnuts. Virtually all of these walnuts are from So. Cal. 21,500 tons is the official estimate for California's 1920 walnut crop. From this yield, walnut growers will receive about nine million dollars. Orange-co. alone is produced one-half of California's total walnut crop. The growing value of the county's walnut groves is shown by the increase in the value of her 1920 crop as compared with that of 1919, which was a little over one-third of the State's entire production. Orange-co. boasts 20,000 acres of walnut groves—one grove of 700 acres. More walnuts are shipped from Santa Ana than from any other station on the Coast, which means anywhere in the United States. Orange-co., men who served in the World war will never forget beans—California beans—for this state produces more than one-half of all the beans grown in the United States. 425,000 California acres planted to beans in 1920 produced sixteen million dollars worth of beans. Two-thirds of this huge bean crop was raised in Southern California, and Orange-co. alone, produced one-eighth of the state's entire crop. The successful operation of co-operative marketing associations in California has attracted the attention of farmers from all over the world. The plan passed from the experimental stage years ago. Facts About Orange-Co For years Orange county has had one of the lowest tax rates in the state. There are fifty-eight counties in California. This year Orange county's tax rate is fourth from the lowest. The tax rate is $1.5O per $1OO valuation inside cities. Outside cities 4O cents per $1OO is added for road district purposes. The rate this year is higher than usual because of the special road needs. Ordinarily the rate is much lower than now. Last year it was $1. Most of the counties of the state have tax rates reaching well over $2,and several go beyond $3. Orange county does not secure a low tax rate by shoving up assessed valuation. Assessments in Orange county are set at only about forty per cent of market values under quick sale. 9O per cent of Orange-co.'s bean crop last year were limas. This county alone produced one-third of all the lima beans grown in California in 192O. Producers of Orange county get the very best prices that market conditions afford. While that general statement may be made concerning all the crops of the county, it is particularly true of all citrus fruits, walnuts and beans, for thoroughly organized into non-profit co-operative associations. The successful operation of co-operative marketing associations in California has attracted the attention of farmers from all over the world. The plan passed from the experimental stage years ago. The principle and practice are an integral part in the stability of farming in Orange-co. The trend is steadily toward firmer rooting of the system. Here in Orangeco, the value of co-operative associations is unquestioned. Growers who have been here 20 or 30 years have been through the mill. They know that without organization growers are the prey of speculative buyers. In the old days combinations of dealers had producers at their mercy. Growers had to take what they could get, and they got what the buyer chose to give. Conditions are different now. Thru organization the growers attend to their own marketing. In some of the industries the co-operative principle is extended into furnishing of growers supplies at cost. The associations are powerful enough to go into the markets and buy the things that their growers have to have in such quantities that private concerns cannot compete with them. In some instances cooperation has resulted in the establishment of mills and by-products plants. For instance, in the citrus industry the central organization has bought a great tract of timberlands with timber enough on it to supply box shook for scores of years to come. The trees are cut and the shook for the users is produced in the association's own sawmill.
