PAGE SIX THE OF Moth UNION OIL AT SAN JUAN The Union Oil Co.'s San Juan Capistrano well, O'Niel No. 1, is drilling at 4120, the formation still continuing a nice-brown shale, but it seems to carry no oil. The outlook for this test well is beginning to look a little doubtful. Dr. C. S. O'Toole, Physician and Surgeon, Phone, Residence 546. Office 569. For the past two weeks, those who number the loquat among the fruits grown on their lots or farms have been enjoying the earliest fruits. Housewives who like the fruit to be somewhat tart for jelly-making have been making use of it in their kitchens, and will continue to make use of it in that way. Those who are especially fond of loquat pies are having their first loquat pies of the season. In many homes loquats will be canned for use. It should be pointed out that the loquat is not grown upon a commercial scale. There are a few acres in orchards, but most of the loquats are grown as border trees or in yards. One tree in a yard produces more than any ordinary family, however fond its members may be of the loquat, will be likely to eat. A great deal more interest is taken locally in the Japanese persimmon than in the loquat. Many people look on the persimmon as a fruit that is going to cut considerable figure as an Orange-co producer. Inability to get nursery stock is one thing that has held back planting of the large Japanese variety that has proven most popular. E. A. White, fruit shipper, last year sold Loquats have appeared in the local markets. In many homes loquats will be canned for use during next fall and winter. It is as a fresh fruit that the loquat is most popular. While the loquat's keeping qualities after it is picked are not good enough to allow it to be shipped to distant points, and it is therefore a complete stranger to most easterners, it is shipped from Orange-co to So. Cal. markets. Placed in large baskets, the loquat looks like a big, smooth, yellow berry. On the trees the fruits grow in clusters. The trees frequently attain a height of 25 feet. The loquat, like many other fruits and flowers that flourish in Sou Cal., came originally from the Orient. This fruit came from Japan, and the tree with its large, thick, serrated leaves, is peculiarly Japanese in appearance. As with the avocado and other fruits that have been introduced here, local growers have made great improvements upon the original fruits. By selection and budding a number of distinct varieties of loquats have been developed, some of them fruiting early in the spring, others late, all of them with fruits larger than the original type. Orange-co Poultrymen To Form Organization Orange county is fastly growing into an important poultry district of So. Calif. The egg producers of this section feel the need of a county organization as a part of the Farm Bureau and to cooperate with similar departments of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties in working out their many problems and especially the egg laying contest which will be run at Pomona by southern poultrymen. Several representatives from each of the poultry districts of Orange county will meet Thursday, May 5, at 2 p.m. in the local Farm Bureau office to draw up plans for organization. The purpose of the department is to be approximately as follows: 1—To increase the quantity and improve the quality of poultry and products. 2—To encourage the use of better stock. 3—To encourage better feeding methods. 4—To assist poultrymen in the control of diseases in their flocks. 5—To hold regular meetings to discuss all matters of interest to poultrymen, to occasionally engage speakers from abroad, and to promote in all possible ways the interests of the poultrymen of Orange-co. by every bite.
