THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER An Independent Newspaper, Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday R. W. ERNEST, Manager PAUL V. HESTEI, Editor Subscription rate—In No. Orange-co: Per year, $2; six months, $1.25. Entered at the Postoffice at Anaheim, Calif., as second class matter. DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS No radiant pearl, which crested fortune wears, No gem that twinkling hangs from beauty's ears, Not the bright stars, which night's blue arch adorn, Nor rising sun, that gilds the vernal morn— Shine with such luster as the tear, that flows Down virtu'es manly cheek, for other woes, Dr. Darwin. Uncle Sam should lay partisan politics away with his winter overcoat. Teach the children to spell well. Good spelling is an admirable accomplishment. The California lemon should be protected by a three-cent tariff and against excessive freight rates. At news of adjournment of the California Legislature many a taxpayer will sigh fervently, "Thank God." "Give him the reins!" the speedsters used to say of old Dobbin, in the good old days. But today it is, "Step on it." Idaltism is most excellent. But there are times and circumstances when an ounce of realism is worth a ton of idealism. About the surest and quickest way to kill profiteering is to expose it. This Secretary of Commerce Hoover is urging. No naval establishment has come around begging Uncle Sam for the privilege of becoming a target for United States naval gunners. With the United States government arming its postal employees to fight off bandits, it would seem that the era of disarmament is yet in the offing of the future. The United States is to have a navy that will not be a source of apprehension to the American people, but will be to any country having hostile designs upon this Nation. That which the United States is expending to expand its navy may prove to be the very best investment for the promotion of world peace that possibly could be made. The Pacific Fleet, in target practice can do far more than merely to hit the Pacific Ocean. Marksmanship of a world-beating accuracy was developed in recent maneuvers. Los Angeles has been talking union railroad station for ten years. Now that the structure has been ordered built, there is a possibility that the subject will be argued in the courts for another ten years. Mutual fairness and mutual consideration b-tween employers and employees, with as much exemplification of the Golden Rule as is humanly possible would solve every intricate problem in industry, in time. Since that time 6-66 models have invited every test of speed and endurance that could prove the metal of a real champion. At one hundred points in the nation these mighty cars have tackled the best local hill climbing records and surpassed them with ease. And in each case the tests have been conducted by unprofessional drivers in standard models that any man can buy. It is not necessary to explain or amplify such consistent success in the field of sport. The records speak for themselves in the most positive terms. They affirm that irrespective of price or piston displacement, the Paige 6-66 is the leader of all American sporting cars. If you believe that championship form is the best guarantee of all record efficiency, then you must believe in the Paige. The Old World is as much upset as a seasick stomach, and the reaction is bound to reduce the volume of American foreign trade for a time. The United States should hasten its economic readjusting and set its house in order, so that business and industry may be in position to profit hugely in the colossal revival in foreign trade that is sure to come, when the Old World gets its quarrels composed and settles down to the day's work. Hydroelectric energy is destined to be a highly important factor in future development of California. The Colorado and other rivers are to be utilized to produce electric energy on an enormous scale. The diverse uses to which this power can be and will be put will bring forth phenomenal industrial expansion. Those countries which are so solitious to have the United States begin to disarm, might well set the example. They have nothing to fear from this country, provided they behave properly toward it. And the United States will meet the leading powers of the world in a practicable acceptable scheme for gradual scraping of armaments. The rivers of the West, so potential in hydroelectric power development possibilities, should be put to useful work, and by the same process should be restrained from wreaking havoc upon the lowlands along their respective courses. Scientific flood control should proceed hand in hand with scientific development of power. —Wittman, Eyesight, Specialist. MRS. Saunby of the Public Utilities Commission of the Orange-co Farm Bureau announce that the railroad commission will have an engineer in the Farm Bureau office, Santa Ana Monday May 9th, 10 a.m. and after, to advise with farmers who use power regarding the proper schedule they should operate under this year, and also to investigate cases where it is stated the Edison Co required the consumers to purchase stock to cover the cost of extensions. It is very important to consumers and prospective consumers that they should be fully and correctly informed on these matters. In particular those who come to get advice regarding rate schedule should bring last year's bills to show the amount of power they used, together with the horse power rating of their motor and a close estimation of the number of days per month that they operate, together with any other details which they think might be of value. Every power user in the country who has a special problem to submit is urged to meet the commission representative next Monday. He will also address the El Medina Farm Center at El Modena School, Monday evening. —Try Plain Dealer Want Ads. —Try Plain Dealer Want Ads. Huntington Beach-blvd as improv-ed by B. R. West ordered James Marshman, colored, to "cut out the marrying habit" when he granted him probation following the latter's plea of guilty to a charge of bigamy. "I don't need and advice, Judge, on that score," said the defendant. "I've been married three times and that is enough for me." The probation order issued by the court also requires Marshburn to pay $25 a month for the support of a minor child. A sentence of ten years in the state prison was suspender for a period of two years. At the end of that period Marshman may change his plea, and if his probation record is what it should be he will be given a clean slate. The complaint against Marshman was sworn to by Goldie Marshman, who claimed to be his legal wife at the time he married another woman. —Try Plain Dealer Want Ads. OXNARD CO.
