M SOIL AUGER IS ESSENTIAL TOOL
AM
a series of soil demonstrations some time ago under the auspices of the Orange County Farm Bureau. Prof. J. W. Nelson, Assistant Leader of Farm Advisors, claimed that probably only one farmer in 1000 knows when he has had enough water in his soil. He showed that between the "wilting point" and the "optimum" there is considerable variation in soils and that having either less than one or more than the other degree of saturation would be detrimental to the trees. He would have the farmer know from the condition of the soil and not by the wilting of the trees when to apply water. The Farm Bureau of California is ready to cooperate with the farmers in showing satisfactory tests which will show the true condition of the soil. Prof. Nelson showed that in orchards where some of the large trees yellowed and it was thought the trees were suffering from lack of water, the opposite state was true.
"We must master our own conditions," he said, "and not depend upon the other fellow. We begin to make our own studies of conditions on our farms and should cooperate to learn the best methods applicable for our neighborhoods."
Prof. Nelson showed the great decline of the soil fertility in the United States in 50 years. The virgin soil of Western Kansas has decreased 30 per cent in nitrogen content and crops, and accordingly in California he claimed the decline has begun, and that it is vital to our future progress to prevent the country ever reverting back to pasture land by improving the soil condition by use of cover crops and in some instances in the use of fertilizers.
Dry years have been responsible for vast losses in the state recently, and he estimated crop decline as $2,000,000 from normal in 1920 from lack of moisture.
Figures compiled in agricultural states show that it costs 65 per cent from returns of normal crops to pay expenses of farming even in our best farming and fruit growing district.
is pasteurized but at least half of the milk used raw is from cows that have not been tuberculin tested for in some cases over a year. The people who own one cow and furnish their neighbors with "Bossie's" rich milk afford a big chance of spreading the disease because few of these family cows are ever tested.
A move is on foot now backed by every progressive dairyman in this county to make Orange county as near tuberculosis free as possible. The state tuberculin tester will be in this county soon so anybody wishing to have their cows tested should send their application to the local Farm Bureau office, Saitta Aas.

Figures compiled in agricultural states show that it costs 65 per cent from returns of normal crops to pay expenses of farming even in our best farming and fruit growing district. It is doubtful whether the average farm gives more than 60 per cent of the returns it should give. The hopes of profit for the individual grower are now that pre-war conditions are returning in getting back part of this forty per cent wastage due to lack of understanding our own business.
There is no reason for pulling up trees 3 to 15 years of age when they should return a profit up to 25 years, stated Prof. Nelson. From a business point of view, there is too much capital invested in an orchard to have to replant it so often.
As a cultural method, he suggested one should practice deep cultivation with young trees, tending to send the roots down, then when the trees are ready to bear, gradually shallowing the cultivation so as to get the feeding roots to a depth of four feet. Rainfall charts show that one of the greatest needs of the San Joaquin Valley is the conservation of all water and application of some of it to the land during the summer months. Fruit buds on matured peach trees begin to form about August 1, reaching full development not before the first of November. When the tree has had its full season's growth and matured its fruit, it is time to prepare for next year's crop by keeping the soil and sub-soil properly supplied with water. Here again we need more individual tests and more individual knowledge. We need to understand our own business.
Tuberculosis Problem of County Milk Producers
The question of tuberculosis in dairy cattle is a thing of vital interest to every cow owner and every person using milk as a food product.
Dr. J. P. Iverson, state veterinarian, while in the county last week met with a group of local dairymen and gave a very thorough and complete discussion of the status of the disease in the state and best methods of control.
In the state of California as a result of the operation of the Pure Milk Law, a public health measure, tuberculin testing has been conducted on a larger scale than any other state in the union. The intradermic test has been accepted by state authorities and given official recognition. The state law now reads that

The intradermic test has been accepted by state authorities and given official recognition. The state law now reads that it is unlawful to offer milk for sale unless it is from a tuberculin free herd or has been pateurized, the tuberculin test to be made at least every six months. Dr. Iverson stated that children under ten years of age were more susceptible to tubersulosis than adults and for this reason alone to protect babies and children the law should be enforced.
There are approximately 90 dairies in Orange county producing milk for human consumption. Seventy-per cent of the milk produced here

BUREAU FUNCTIONS FOR COMMUNITY
By Dr. J. R. Schofield, Secretary
Orange-co Farm Bureau
Members of the Farm Bureau, every one of us, should be so well acquainted with our organization that we realize that it is our organization and that we are, indeed, a part of it.
No one in this great republic has more reason to be proud of himself, his position, or his industry than have the members of the American Farm Bureau.
Born to honest toil and a great purpose, that of feeding the world, they are entitled to honor and respect from the entire nation.
Remember that the sturdy pioneer who conquered the wilderness and founded on the American continent a nation of homes was an agriculturalist; our beloved Washington and Lincoln were from the farm as most of our great leaders to today.
When in the midst of the greatest calamity that has ever occurred in the history of the world, it became necessary to call on some one Industry for aid, the world with one accord appealed to the American farmer.
By an intelligent and combined effort, by a loyal cooperation of all of our people, America put across the seemingly impossible, went over the top, halted the forces of autocracy and gave the wavering lines of western civilization the needed strength and encouragement.
Today it is the American farmer who is feeding starving millions abroad, and building in our own fair land homes of comfort and contentment from which shall come the future leaders of the world.
Long live the American farmer and the American Farm Bureau!
MANY BELIEVE IN "DIVINE HEALING"
In a message that went to the hearts of those present Sunday afternoon at his residence, Rev. J. N. Blakeley, 511 No. Olive-st, pastor of the Church of the Lord, showed on scriptural grounds that the miracles and signs of the Apostolic age will follow the believers who are really "walking in the inner circle with God."
These signs followed the church for 300 years until the time of Constantine when the church became corrupted with the state, and lost its glory. Even after that there were instances throughout the Dark Ages, but it is only within recent years that Divine healing has been recognized anew.
Rev. Blakeley began his message with Acts 14:9: "The same heard
Paul speak, who steadfastly behold him, and perceiving he had faith to be healed." How did this poor man come to have this faith? By hearing Paul speak. He credited the doctrine he heard. He believed that Christ would make him whole. No doubt he had heard of the miracles in which Christ had wrought. Why aren't these miracles more evident today? One trite sentence: Lack of faith.
"There is a gift of healing and gift of miracles." Rev. Blakeley said.
"Healing is a slower process than miracle. Miracles are the fruits of a mature Christian faith, while healing is a slower process where the individual has not the faith, it is new to them and always has a command attached to it like the blind man Christ healed. He told him to go and wash in the pool (St. John 9:6-7.)"
"Divine healing is a disease curse by the bower of God thru faith in the name of Jesus Christ. The indivial has not the faith, it is new to them and always has a command attached to it like the blind man Christ healed. He told him to go and wash in the pool (St. John 9:6-7.)"

That Rev. Blakeley has the faith
whereof he preaches is evident by
the fact that there are many people
in Anaheim who back his statements
with the undeniable facts that they
have been healed of various diseases,
many of which doctors could not
touch, thru faith in Jesus by his
prayers. One of these is Mrs. Annie
Zackarias, 311 Enst Chartress-st, who
suffered 21 years from curvature of
the spine, being treated by specialists in Oklahoma, Kansas, Long
Beach, Pasadena, Los Angeles and
Anaheim. She stated yesterday that
local doctors took great interest in
her case, doing everything they
could for her, without effect. Rev.
Blakeley prayed for her, and she was
healed within six days. Her daughter
Dorothy, who she said the doctors delated must undergo an operation for
adenoids, was also miraculously heaed, she said.
Another case was that of C. E.
Wohlbenuth - 211 No. Olive-st, who
suffered many years from cancer in
the stomach, being treated by doctors in Anaheim and Los Angeles, he
said, with little hope of cure. Rev.
Blakeley prayed with him and was healed January 23 of this year.
