HEALTH OFFICERS
PASSING THE BUCK
OLIND, April 21.—(Special) — The state health officer and the county health officer are still passing the buck regarding the diphtheria scare in Olinda. Miss Garrison, the nurse whom the school board hired to take charge of the fight against the diphtheria has found it impossible to continue her work any longer because of the apparent indifference of the county and state. The state insists that Olinda should be cared for by the county and the county insists that Olinda's problem is her own and must be fought out locally. There are many homes under quarantine and one new case on the Columbia lease of real diphtheria, not germs this time. Over 25 pct. of cultures taken and sent to Los Angeles for examination have come back positive. About 100 persons are said to be germ carriers in Olinda, and only a small part of the population has had cultures taken. There have been about a dozen cases of real sickness and one death. The health officers of the surrounding cities have laughed at the scare and told people that the germs do not mean anything. The people, generally, have done all in their power to help the nurse in her work but many have done what they could to hinder. As the matter now stands nothing will be done and germ carriers can go where they please and prove the contention of the doctors who have said there is nothing to it.
Miss Garrison will always be remembered for her efficient work here under great difficulties. The Columbia Oil Co. at a meeting last week agreed to furnish a nurse and a doctor for their lease in order to stamp out the disease but when it was found tadht the other leases would do nothing the company said it was no use for one company to go ahead alone and so withdrew its offer.
