The Village Gossip
Do you know Scrophulariaceae?
Perhaps you know Rhamnaceae?
Well then, you surely know Violaceae, Iridaceae or Liliaceae?
No?
Well, you probably do know them all and get don't realize that you are on speaking terms with them under those names.
No, these are not the names of fancy drinks to be found at soda fountains, and neither are they the names of new brands of breakfast food.
They are delicate little springtime strangers that peep and nod at you from hillside, meadow and mountain.
What are they? you ask.
They are the flowers that bloom in the spring, tra la.
Yes, spring has come.
If you don't believe it just hop into your car and head toward the mountains.
When you reach the foothills climb out of the car and hike off across the field. Take your botany or some other book on flowers along and when you pick your first Indian paint brush look it up in the technical language of your book and you will find that the fragrant Indian paint brush is no other than Scrophulariaceae.
The latest botanical edition classes the Scrophulariaceae under the genus castilllea, of which the species californica and foliolosa are the common local varieties.
The Illiacae is another common flower traveling under a long name. The genus lichelostemma is one of the commonest and most popular wild flowers. The specie found in this district most commonly is the capitata. This beautiful blue flower is a cousin to the stately genus hesperoyucca, of which the specie Whipplei is the most common locally.
All of this merely means that the common wild byacifth, or brodia, is a first cousin to the beautiful pucca, or Spanish bayonet. Both of these flowers are now to be found in profusion on the mesas and in the hills. Yuccas are found most commonly in the chaparral belt of all the mountain ranges, usually from June to July of each year. This year they hiker is the wild lilac. This fragrant flower grows in wonderful profusion in many districts of the chaparral belt in the mountains. It is known as Rhamnaceae, member of the buck-thorn family and of the genus ceanthus. It is commonly called the California lilac.
That Julian Eltinge stuff is fine business if you can get away with it. Otherwise not.
This is the conclusion reached by "Billy" and Jack Fahs and Harold Stabler, Fullerton union high school boys, and they speak from experience.
The other evening there was a girls' costume party at the Fullerton high school, a party of, by and for the girls, no others need apply.
However, the boys thought they would see just how far they could impersonate coy, elusive, frippery, be frilled femininity, and get away with it.
They arranged for costumes, one was a nun, another was a nurse and the third was something else and there was clever work in draping feeds and hands to look cinderella-like, but there was that oration bass voice of the dominant and masterful male.
It's hard to change the voice after the voice changes.
The boys, gracefully and thoroughly attired and drilled, got by the gate, but that was about all. The eagle eye of one of the teachers pierced the disguise and they were set upon without ceremony and ejected with more or less entuasion, not to say abandon and sang froid.
One of the girls, who had a girl friend inside, gained admittance a second time through a side door, but again that eagle eye found him and the bouncer did his duty with neatness and dispatch.
Perhaps, say the boys, Julian, in all his glory, might have gotten by that eagle eye, but they have their doubts.

All of this merely means that the common wild hyacinth, or brodia, is a first cousin to the beautiful pucca, or Spanish bayonet. Both of these flowers are now to be found in profusion on the mesas and in the hills. Yuccas are found most commonly in the chaparral belt of all the mountain ranges, usually from June to July of each year. This year they are much earlier and many auto parties are bringing in the huge spikes conspicuously exhibited on their cars.
Wild hyacinths are found in the mesas and lower foothills. They are beautiful flowers with big composite blossom on the end of a long fleshy stem. They will last longer than most wild flowers and have a most delightful fragrance.
The species pedunculata is the technical name of the beautiful yellow violet or the genus viola of the family violaceae. Growing on the shady sides of the lower hills and on protected areas of the mesas these beautiful blossoms have lured many motorists from their cars to wander in the fields.
Iridaceae, the iris family, is also represented. This is the genus sisyrichum and the specie bellum. The flower is the blue-eyed grass. It is to be found most frequently on grassy cliffs from sea level to 6000 feet elevation.
