Sam Lewis, Distinguished Welsh Tenor, One of Country’s Popular Ballad Singers
With Talented Assisting Musical Stars, Mr. Lewis Scheduled for Two Concerts Sixth Day of Chautauqua
Sam Lewis, the well known Welsh tenor, is one of the leading musical artists to be presented during the coming Chautauqua. He is appearing this season at the head of his own concert organization. Mr. Lewis first achieved distinction through his rare ability as a ballad singer, but he is now as well known for his achievements in the concert and oratorio field. He has one of the most pleasing tenor voices of the younger generation of singers, of splendid volume and glorious in its rich tones. Assisting artists are Amber Hopkins, reader, Allent Ament, violinist, and Florence Berney, pianist and accompanist.

LET'S HAVE FAIR PLAY
(Santa Ana Register)
The Register is far from being convinced that the Anaheim C. of C. has made out a case against County Engineer J. L. McBride or against the county engineer system. In fact, it is convinced that the conclusion reached by those making the report, recommending the removal of McBride, is unfair and not justified, even as the case stands today without McBride having yet filed his reply to the accusations made in the somewhat extravagantly worded report filed with the A. C. of C.
It is a matter of common knowledge that Supervisor William Schumacher of the third district has a strong personal animus toward Coun-

Engineer McBride. His objection to the county engineer system from the first seems to have been objected to McBride rather than to the county engineer system.
Whether there has been a deliberate attempt to get McBride's scalp, whether the accountants hired to make the investigation were instructed to condemn and not to praise, is one that the A. C. of C. should consider, and the application by the taxpayers of the proverbial grain of salt to the report of the experts is advisable.
Certainly McBride's request that judgment be withheld until he has had an opportunity to reply to the 18-page complaint is one that should be granted by every taxpayer.
Of course, the county engineer system in 1920 "cost more" than did road-maintenance and road-building under the individual supervisor system followed in 1919. Miles of road that were apparently sound in 1919 went to pieces in 1920. McBride inherited no system of accounting, no system of county management. He had to make them as he went along, and with roads going to piece faster than any taxpayer ever dreamed of.

It was natural that mistakes should be made. If the present rate of road destruction keeps up, road maintenance in 1921 will "cost more" than it did in 1820. The fact that a county engineer system has double or three times as much work to do in 1920 as did four separate supervisorial districts in 1919, and therefore spends in 1920 $135,000 more than was spent in 1919, does not appeal to the Register as being proof of the inefficiency of the county engineer system. Neither does it furnish ground for the removal of the present county engineer.
The Register was today shown by County Auditor W. C. Jerome all of the warrants concerning which specific complaint was made in the report. The allegation being that they were not sufficiently clear in showing the various items concerned. Certainly if the entire complaint has no more basis in fact than it has in relation to these warrants, the entire proceedings are ridiculous. One warrant—mind you, one out of 21,200—slipped thru not fully itemized, and since that one was the regular warrant of a county employee on a stated salary there could be no doubt about what it was for. The other warrants were fully itemized neatly by typewriter.

there were twenty nationalities among the 200 members of the cast,
chosen from that 100,000. It was not quite as frivolous a "review" as we are accustomed to, see atop the New York roofs, but it was without a doubt as truly "American."
Sam Shing, 70 years old, is the only Chinese left in Chinatown who wears a queue. A delegation called on him the other day—a group of modern Chinese who have been wearing their hair short ever since the Chinese republic was proclaimed a few years ago—in an effort to persuade him to become as queueless as they. They found him, as usual, sitting in the doorway of his drug store in Doyers-st, where he sells Chinese remedies or snakes' blood, frogs, tongues, ginseng powders and dried serpents' eggs, and they tried to lure him to the busy barber shop across the way. But he only waved his pipestem at them and turned away. As a contrast to San Shing and his drug store, the barber shop across the street not only is kept busy giving American hair-cuts, but little Chinese manicurists there take care of the Chinese dandies' finger tips.
