Saturday, March 26, 1921 PROSPECT FOR FAIR PRICES FOR SUGAR "The prospect for fair prices for sugar the coming season is good. Prices have advanced two cents since Feb. 1. They will go still higher — probably to ten cents or more. Beet production this season will be about normal and the growers should receive prices that will bring them profitable returns for their labor." This, in brief, is the beet and sugar situation as seen by A.E. Carlton, president of the Holly Sugar Corn, owner of three sugar plants in Orange-co and a large number of mills in Colorado and other sections. Carlton is here from Colorado for a week or ten days, looking over the properties of the corporation. He is a big figure in the financial world, being president of the First National bank of Cripple Creek, a member of the board of directors of the Columbia Trust bank of New York, a director of the C. of C. of the U.S. and associated with men who own and operate big copper plants in Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Carlton has just returned from a tour of the East and a trip to Washington, where he appeared before the ways and means committee in behalf of tariff protection for American products. "I was called before the commit-tee to discuss the sugar situation," said the sugar man. "Ten minutes usually is allowed one for presentation of matters to the committee. I was there several times ten minutes, for the committee kept me before it for one hour and ten minutes. "I did not devote all that time to the presentation of facts with reference to the necessity of adequate tariff on sugar. I talked to the committee on protection of California products. I found the committee very favorable. There has been a great change in the attitude of the big men toward the tariff, and I found the Democrats co-operating in a fine way with the Republicans on the matter of offering protection to American products. "My observation of conditions in the big centers of the East convinces me that we have passed the low point in the period of depression. We are now ready to reverse our actions of the last six or seven months and to strike into a five-period of real business and industrial activity. There were definite signs of resumption of activity and better business conditions. Perhaps the most disturbing elements in the adjustment are those of wages and taxation. The uncertainty of taxation is crippling big business enterprises to a certain extent. The adjustment in wage scales to be made must be with the employees of railroads and the coal mines. I do not think that there should be any radical cut in wages, but I do believe that the employee in these lines must recognize the fact that their wages will have to be clipped somewhat to correspond with reductions made in living costs — reductions that are positive and proven. These are two conditions in our domestic situation that must be adjusted. "In my opinion every feature that is embarrassing business at this time will be adjusted and this without any serious controversies. The adjustment is being made now and in the corrections that are to follow the change will be made without seriously disturbing business conditions in the U.S." Locally the beet crop situation looks most promising. I believe that we will have good crops here, and that prices will be satisfactory to 1920 OLDS C Touring, excellent condition... $1000 1920 OAKLAND Touring driven 25,000 miles ... $1350 1920 STUDEBAKER Special Six ... $1750 1920 CHEVROLET 490 Touring, splendid condition ... $695 1919 OLDS Coupe, excellent condition. MILLER (Chief Horse Trainer with Howe's Great London Circus and Van Amburg's Trained Wild Animals.) My word for it, a horse has less brain power than any other animal. An ostrich has more brains than a horse. So has an alligator. That curious indefinite quantity known as "instinct" is at the bottom of all the tricks the horse learns. Usually the eating is at the bottom of his entire education. He does things for the most part because he gets something good to eat after the doing. It is his natural search after food that makes him do them. Just as he paws more evidence of judgment. It is no uncommon thing for a horse to open a feed box to get at the grain inside. Some people fancy this is a proof of intelligence. Really it is natural nosing after something to eat. Man is not the only animal whose heart can beat be reached thru his stomach. There is not the slightest reason to believe that a horse has a thinking mind. Here is an instance: During the winter, two of our ponies that do a pedestal act, and always get a lump of sugar after it if they make no mistakes, rehearsed so much that their pedestals became discolored with dirt. When they FOR SALE—Miscellaneous FOR RENT — Garage in Elk Park tract, acquire of Will Bruns, at So. County Bank. FOR SALE—$ 1-2 shares A. U. Water Co. stock. T. O. Rainey, Brookhurst. There never was anything to break. His instincts were simply set in motion. Some men take months to teach a horse the simplest trick and weeks to make him bridle-wise. In a week I can have the same horse responding easily to my directions in simple tricks. It isn't the horse; it is the trainer. Some men exercise an influence over animals which is almost hypnotic. The man himself can't tell how it is done. In some mysterious manner the horse's instincts make him do certain things in certain ways at certain times. He does them just as he eats and with met at the home of Mrs. Hubbard this week. Mr. and Mrs. Harley Coffey and daughter, Evelyn, and Mrs. Glifford Haumore were fishing at the beach Thursday. Mrs. Richards and two children are spending Easter vacation with her relatives in Hollywood. Preston Varner won off work a few days with a light touch of the mansie. Miss Monn and Ruth Clegg entertained company at their home Tuesday evening. Mrs. Onthouse is getting ready to make a visit with her daughter, in Bakersfield. Mrs. McElhaney entertained at a party at her home on this lease Tuesday night. 500 was played and toward midnight the hostess served delightful refreshments. Don and Charlie Blistrom, of Pomona, formerly of this lease, was over and spent a few days of their vacation with their grandmother and grandfather, of this lease. Mr. and Mrs. Harley Coffey motored to Los Angeles Saturday and brought Mr. and Mrs. A. P. James and son back with them to stay over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard are entertaining the latter's twin nephews from Huntington Park over Easter week. Miss Agnes Coffey was the week-end guest of her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Keen, in Los Angeles. Floyd Coffey was a week-end guest at the Coffey home this week from San Pedro.
