Assembly Bill No. 663 now before the present legislature, provides for the repeal of Section 6. This bill was introduced by Assemblyman E.H. Christian of Alameda-co. It is scheduled to come up for a hearing before the assembly committee at Sacramento March 25. The act as passed by the legislature in 1911 relates to the payment of death benefits by fraternal and benefit societies. Hill, "a speaker or writer who has the largest stock of words to choose from, will choose the best words for his purpose. Hence the desirableness of an ample vocabulary. In the copiousness and variety of the vocabularies at their command, men differ widely. New York Letter by Lucy Joanne Price NEW YORK, March 28—Evidently the Fifth-ave bus tops are to continue to hold their place as the last stand of the city's gentle love affairs. When the park department took its cruel stand in regard to occasional handholdings or kisses being indulged in within their domain, nothing was left to the handholders but the bus tops. Then somebody remembered them and wrote to the Fifth Avenue.Coach Co., protesting against its allowing such goings on. The company refused to be disturbed or to issue orders anent its more sentimental passengers. So the other day, a shocked person, signing himself in the good old way, "Pro Bono Publico," wrote a letter to Sheriff Knott, expressing his shocks. And that gallant official replied "Let the spooners spoon," and more to that effect. So in this whole big city, there remain the few floating oases for those who have no homes of their own in which to express their sentiments. Willard Mack snaps his fingers at temperament and mood and all the other customary needs of the creator of art and drama. He declares that when he wrote, staged and produced "Smooth as Silk," the play in which he is now starring, in six days, he did what any other playwright could do if he didn't think it was necessary to flit to Palm Beach to "think" and to "write only when the mood is on" and all the rest of the things which Wil. The company further recites that March 14, last, it sold to the public generally 17,707 shares of its treasury capital stock. Universal China Day Celebrated April 17 Universal China Day will be observed in the churches of So. Calif., Sunday, April 17, according to an announcement received by H. H. Benjamin, local chairman for the China Famine Fund. The letter sent to the pastors of all churches is as follows: "You have the story already. After the hatching season, cook, sell or pen your roosters. Hens not running with a male bird will produce infertile eggs—quality eggs that keep best and market best. The rooster does not help the hens to lay. Scratch a socialist and you will find a snob, says a contemporary. "If he wants to," he avers, "a playwright can do just as well in Harlem flat as out in sunny California. But most of the time, he doesn't want to." There is one region from which will come no measures to regulate woman's dress. That is New York City. Previously earliest reformers could usually get such bills introduced, even the everyone knew they wouldn't get beyond the "pleased to meet you" stage. But a representative from here was approached by one who was much disturbed about "what are we coming to" with a bill which would limit the brevity of women's skirts. "Not for me," said this wise man, edging away. "Those short skirts put me here today. There are some thousands of them in my district. Not for me. There are no dress reform bills before the New York legislature as yet. There will be none. It was an unusual sight that attracted the librarian's attention first. An ordinary looking man sat peaceably at a reading table when suddenly something soapsudsy-looking guashed from the top of his waistcoat. The librarian hesitated. There was nothing in the rules to meet the emergency of a gushing soapsuds. Then she went over to him. "Is—in—anything the matter?" she asked gently. "Matter?" said the man; and then noticed his bubbling waistcoat. By that time three more severe members of the public library staff had gathered about. There was no escape and the man thrust in his hand and pulled out the bottle, which had got warm and puffed its cork out with the force of its yeast or whatever it got the force from. "Why," gasped the severer guardian of the library law and order, "Why, he ought to be arrested. We ought to soverer of his plight drew close to him. 'Was it gold home brew?' she asked, have him arrested." The original Gls. Yes," cried the man defiantly. "If was good home. And I got the recipe for it right here in your library!" She guardians withdrew without calling the police. They were not certain just what might be the law governing such recipes. The National Disabled Soldiers' League, with headquarters in this city, sent personal letters the other day to the governors of all states in the union, asking them to set aside he week beginning April 10, as "Disabled Soldiers' Week," for the purpose of attracting nation-wide attention to the needs of men who gave their health and strength in the defense of their country. It was said that the disclosures of conditions at some of the hospitals where the soldiers are being cared for—more or less—has led to the action. Asserting it has drilled a well 2,615 feet at a cost in excess of $90,000, the Texcal Oil & Refining Co. of Los Angeles has filed suit against H. A. Bardeen to prove a leasehold interest on certain property at Huntington Beach. The oil company also asks that a temporary restraining order be issued to prevent Bardeen or his agents from interfering or interrupting the company's drilling operations, pending the trial of the action. A lease purporting to have been signed by the plaintiff and defendant is attached to the papers filed. The oil well over which the dispute arises is in the Garfield-at addition to Huntington Beach. The company points out that the well is within 200 feet of another well which has been drilled by the Standard Oil Co., and which is producing Another Big in Dried Fruits.
