"Damnitis" (Financial Insurance News.) The arteries of life in every city are its public utilities. The interests of a municipality and the public utility serving it are identical. The municipality is master of the destiny of each of the utilities serving it, as well as of its own. The progress of the one is the upbuilding of the other—ideally this is so, but in the everyday run of affairs does it actually work out this way? Recently in Los Angeles there seems to have appeared an "Epidemic of Damnitis"—a disease with possibilities more deadly than influenza. This disease, when contracted by an individual or a group of individuals, in its most deadly form, brings in an uncontrollable fever of criticism—and for what purpose? It is a matter of common knowledge that whenever a public utility seeks justice in the interest of rendering good service to this great metropolis of ours, that the fever of Damnitis begins raging in our body politic! Why should the utilities be damned because they seek assistance from those whom they serve? Are not their problems worthy of a fair and same consideration? The greatest problem they have to meet today is the problem which every citizen creates by the expansion of his business or his social interests. The very byword of Los Angeles today is expansion. Look at our streets, our buildings—our ever growing residential district—every city in every section is teeming with its activities. The arteries which are feeding and nourishing this growth are its great public utilities. Eradicate the "Epidemic of Damnitis" and assist, at least with a sympathetic attitude, these utilities for which you yourself create a tremendous problem, by your own omnipotence. This information was contained in a letter received at the local farm bureau office thanking the organization for their thoughtfulness in shipping several boxes of oranges to Chicago in time to arrive before the meeting. One paragraph of the letter stated: "Your farm bureau was very much in the minds of the executive committee, as Dr. H. A. Walker, president of the California Farm Bureau federation, distributed once or three during each session, the wonderful products of your trees." GERMANS WILL FREE IMPRISONED YANKS MOSBACH, Germany, March 25—Carl Neuf and Franz Zimmer, American detectives serving prison sentences here for attempting to seize Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, American slacker, and whose release has been demanded by the U.S., probably will not serve their full terms, it was stated today. It is intended to keep the men in jail a reasonable time and then turn them loose, with the explanation that the Berlin government was going to do so anyway and that the American government's demand had nothing to do with it.
