GARDEN GROVE, March 23.—Immediately after the receipt of a permit to do business and still stock in the company from the state commission of corporations, the directors of the Garden Grove Petroleum Co. ordered all equipment necessary to put down a well and the work is to start in at least 40 days. The company's first well will be located on the Ed Chaffee five acres on the West Ocean avenue boulevard and near the depot and bean ware houses, within a stone throw of the center of Garden Grove. This tract is in a lease of 700 acres, which it is planned shall be enlarged to 1000 acres before drilling actually starts. The officers of the company are Edward Caffee, president; C. G. Crossby, vice-president; W. M. Adland, secretary; and J. M. Woodworth, treasurer. The directors are Edward Chaffee, W. M. Adland, C. G. Crossby, F. M. Keafsnyder, P. L. Woodhouse, Vernon King and J. This tract is in a lease of 700 acres, which it is planned shall be enlarged to 1000 acres before drilling actually starts. The officers of the company are Edward Coffee, president; C. G. Crowe, vice-president; W. M. Adland, secretary; and J. M. Woodworth, treasurer. The directors are Edward Chaffee, W. M. Adland, C. G. Crosby, F. M. Reafanyder, P. L. Woodhouse, Vernon King and J. M. Woodworth. The company has been organized as a community development proposition without promotion stock and the fact that every officer and director is a resident and taxpayer of Garden Grove assures an honest, competent administration with everything possible being done to protect and advance the interests, not only of the company but of the entire community. The officers of the company consider themselves extremely fortunate in procuring the services of H. E. Yockey to assist them in completely financing the entire enterprise. C. E. Stoner, of Long Beach, and W. S. Hancock, of Los Angeles, both men of wide experience and ability, have also become interested in the Garden Grove Petroleum company and will devote both their time and means to the enterprise. The general manager and superintendent of the company is E. D. Wakefield, who will be in direct charge of the drilling operations. Mr. Wakefield has been employed by many of the large oil companies in practically all of the great oil fields of the world for many years, and his extensive experience and travel have given him both a technical and practical knowledge of the oil game from start to finish, which will be at the service of the new Garden Grove company. Inasmuch as Garden Grove is on a direct line between two large producing fields and excellent oil indications have been found by the experts who have examined the field, the organizers of the new home oil company do not regard their well as a "wildcat" proposition, for the producing wells of Orange-co have already proven this field, they declare. They have invested their money, therefore, with entire confidence that it will come back to them many fold when an oil-producing well is brought in. They hope that other residents and property owners of Garden Grove will join them so that a thorough prospect of the district can be made without delay, thus determining once and for all he size and extent of the oil bearing strata which many believe underlies this entire district. The company has established its office in the Garden Grove News building, and Henry Yockey, local rancher and financial agent of the company, has erected an office on the lease, where subscriptions may be left and he will be glad to give all information about the company to interested parties. FIND MOTIVE FOR DEATH LOS ANGELES, March 23.—Probable dual motive for the alleged murder of Mrs. Mary Edna Smith, 25, cynale poison victim, has been found, according to investigators. With that basis established today, according to the announcements of Deputy Sheriffs J. B. Fox and Joe Nolan, the search for the evidence sufficient to warrant arrest took on renewed activity and fresh hope. Mrs. Smith was found dead by her husband in their small home at Bell, on March 14. A coroner's autopsy established she had died from cyanide poisoning. Suicide was early abandoned as a solution of the case. OBIE HAS BIRTHDAY PARTY O. B. Baxtter, deputy city marshal, had a birthday today. Just how old he is he did not reveal, and it would probably be rude to conjecture. He was wise enough, however, not to let the "boys" know it during the forenoon but told 'the boss,' Marshal Steadman, at noon he must have a half holiday as his wife had gotten up a party for him, which he must attend. Then he was gone before the news spread, and the "boys" lost a treat. POSSE SEERS "BAD MAN." LOS ANGELES, March 23.—Prepared for a gun battle when the fugitive is cornered, posses of officers from Los Angeles, Pomona and Claremont set out early today to run down Maximino Carno, Mexican "bad man," who last evening shot and killed Rafael Carlroo, an orange picker, on a ranch near Claremont. A feud of several weeks' standing, declared to have started because of the "bad man's" efforts to steal Carlroo's sweetheart, was reported to have resulted in the shooting. PROPOSED LAW CHANGE SACRAMENTO, March 23.—The Chamberlin repeal of section 772 of the penal code, which would permit county officers removed from office to appeal to higher courts than the superior court, was set aside in the senate. TO CEMENT WELL UPON "FLATS" Reports from Richfield this morning were to the effect that the Petroleum Midway was making preparations to cement the well on the "flats" south of the Richfield Consolidated, because of the excellent showings there. The Richfield Consolidated No. 1 was to be put on the pump this afternoon. The Isaacs well brot in by the Petroleum Midway is good for 800 barrels, it was stated today, and the same report stated the Petroleum Midway has set stakes for three rigs on the Krugg lease adjoinning. START $45,000 CO SHIP OVER MILLION BOXES OF ORANGES HERE THIS SEASON Sandilands Believes Market Will Be in Much Better Shape When Valencias Start Forward. Local valencia packers and growers are much interested in the recent stiffening of the navel market. While there have been no advances in price to speak of, there is a very vigorous demand for fruit at present prices, declares Manager G. W. Sandilands, of the Anaheim Orange & Lemon Assn. "In view of the enormous amount of fruit going forward how, tho the navel growers are not resaping any big returns, the absence of fruit blockades is wonderfully inspiring," declared Sandilands this afternoon. "Probably never before was so much citrus fruit being consumed at this time of the year as at present, which indicates that things aren't so bad at the other end. "We feel that when we get in the market with our valencias we will be in a very strong position, comparatively, as the weather will have opened up then, permitting the increased peddler trade, and we will have the added advantage of being able to give the trade any size of GREEK ARMIES SET FOR DRIVE ON TURKS LONDON, March 23. — Greek armies in Asia Minor planned to begin an offensive against the Turks today, according to information to the British foreign office. Hostilities in the territory assigned to Greece by the Sevres treny were halted shortly before the allied conference in London, where an effort was made to revise the treaty. MOVE TO AID YANKS HELD BY GERMANS BULLETIN WASHINGTON, Mar. 23. — The United States has demanded of Germany the surrender of Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, wealthy Philadelphia draft dodger, and the release from prison of two Americans who recently attempted to capture Burgdoll, it was learned today on official authority. WASHINGTON, March 23.—War department, navy department, state department and the offices of President Harding were delighted today with messages from every corner of the U.S. urging that immediate national action be taken to free two Americans who have been sentenced to terms of imprisonment in a German jail for the "crime" of seeking to arrest Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, the most notorious "slacker" in Uncle Sam's history and himself JURY DISAGREES IN TRIAL OF DR. SUE AMACK, OF ANAHEIM Case of Dr. A. C. Foy, Anaheim, Set for Rehearing Today, Indefinitely Postponed. The jury in the case of Dr. Sue Amack, Anaheim, first woman chiropractor to be tried in Orange-co, was dismissed at 7:30 p.m. yesterday when it was called in by Superior Judge Williams after five hours' deliberations. The jury was reported to have stood 11 for conviction and one for acquittal. In his argument before the jury, Atty. Griffith Jones, of Los Angeles, said: "I am not sacrilegious but let me tell you that if Jesus Christ were on earth today he would be arrested and placed in jail at the hands of the state medical board and he would be accused of practicing medicine without a license." The case of Dr. A. C. Foy, Anaheim chiropractor, set for rehearing today, following a hung jury, was continued indefinitely. GERMANY WINS 7-4 IN SILESIAN VOTE BERLIN, March 22.—The final returns from the upper Silesian plebiscite were announced by the big returns, the absence of fruit blockades is wonderfully inspiring," declared Sandilands this afternoon. "Probably never before was so much citrus fruit being consumed at this time of the year as at present, which indicates that things aren't so bad at the other end. "We feel that when we get in the market with our valencias we will be in a very strong position, comparatively, as the weather will have opened up then, permitting the increased peddler trade, and we will have the added advantage of being able to give the trade any size of fruit desired, something the navel growers have been unable to do with resulting high prices for grades not available. "The valencias have sized up most satisfactorily since the recent rains and this section will have by far the biggest crop of fruit in its history. Anaheim houses will ship 3000 cars or more than 1,000,000 boxes of fruit this year." "We believe that shortly there will come announcement of marked reductions in freight rates. These may come in the form of emergency or permanent reductions. This particular section will command the top valencia prices more so than ever this year," declares Sandilands. SICK GET 8 GALLONS OF BEER PER MONTH WASHINGTON, March 23.—Provisions for carrying into effect the ruling of former Attorney General Palmer regarding the use of liquor for medicine were learned today. They are: That a doctor may furnish eight gallons of liquor for an ailing patient every 30 days. That a doctor must find a good and sufficient reason for prescribing beer; that he must not prescribe the maximum more often than every 30 days, but he is not limited as to the number of patients for whom he may prescribe. That manufacture of real beer cannot be carried on in the same plants used for manufacture of near-beer. That breweries may sell only to wholesale druggists, who in turn, sell to retail druggists, who must have permits to deal in real beers. PREPARE ATTACK FOR NEW "HUTCH" TRIAL LOS ANGELES, March 23. — An attack on the verdict convicting "Big Hutch" Hutchings, bunko swindler, returned by the jury in less than 10 minutes, was prepared today by Defense Atty. Paul Schenck, who will make a motion for a new trial tomorrow morning. The new trial motion will be based upon the alleged misconduct of Dist. Atty. Woolwine in striking Schenck in the presence of the jury last week in the court room. "Hutch," who has a sentence of from one to ten years in the penitentiary as a result of his conviction by the jury, was a prisoner in the BURGDOLL, it was learned today on official authority. WASHINGTON, March 23.—War department, navy department, state department and the offices of President Harding were delayed today with messages from every corner of U.S. urging that immediate national action be taken to free two Americans who have been sentenced to terms of imprisonment in a German jail for the "crime" of seeking to arrest Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, the most notorious "slacker" in Uncle Sam's history and himself an escaped American prisoner. There is every indication that the U.S. government will take immediate and vigorous action amounting almost to a demand for the freedom of the two Americans who have been sentenced by a German civil court. The two Yankees whose freedom the deluge of telegrams demands, are Frank Zimmer and Carl Neaf. They are American detectives from the U.S. army of occupation on the Rhine and they were arrested by German police when they attempted to seize Bergdoll at Eberbach, Baden. The two Americans were tried yesterday by the German civil courts and were found guilty. Today they were sentenced. Neaf to serve 15 months in a German jail and Zimmer for six months. The three German accomplices of the American detectives were sentenced to serve 11, 10 and six months, respectively. The German civil charge against the Americans was unlawful shooting and felonious assault. GERMANY CALLS FOR INDEMNITY CONFAB BERLIN, March 23.—A series of conferences was called for today by the German government to settle the question of indemnities. A note was sent to the allied powers saying Germany cannot pay the billion marks required today. There was some anxiety in official circles. While the reparations note setting March 23 as the date for the initial payment was not regarded as an ultimatum it was sharp and definite. Some advisers of the government feared that Germany was showing herself too much inclined to obstruct a final settlement and that serious trouble might result. JUDGE TAKES STILLMAN CASE UNDER ADVISEMENT WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., March 23. Judge Morschauser took under advisement Mrs. Jas. A. Stillman's application for $10,000 alimony and $25,000 attorney's fees after today's hearing. MINISTERS FAVOR CLOSING ON SUNDAY The largest gathering of Protestant preachers that ever met in Orange county assembled in James' restaurant, Santa Ana, yesterday. The purpose of the meeting was twofold: to organize the Orange County Clerical Club and to consider the proposal of the State Sunday School Association to make a forward move in Orange county in religious education. After a careful consideration of the latter question the committee was continued and asked to investigate the conditions in the county bearing upon the question of Sunday school education and report back on April 26th. After the organization of the club, of which Dr. Geissinger was elected president, Dr. Geissinger presented a resolution endorsing the action of the directors of the Valencia Orange Show and the Chamber of Commerce in closing the coming Orange Show on Sunday. The resolution is given below. It was passed unanimously but called forth some interesting MOST-UP-TO-DATE BUILDING OF KIND IN SOUTH. CALIF. Construction Will Begin Tomorrow on Big Improvement to Clementine-st. Ross Bros., of the Orange-co Realty Co., will start construction tomorrow morning on a $45,000 apartment court on the east side of Clementine-st between Center and Chartrets, it was announced today. The building permit was to be taken out this afternoon. The contract for the lumber was let to the Gibbs Lumber Co. yesterday. Ross Bros. will oversee the construction themselves, not letting the job by contract. The court will have 14 apartments of four rooms each, a total of 56 rooms. Construction will be of brick, it being inside the fire zone. The brick will be red stippled, with white relief, and there will be a 2½-foot red tile cornice. A feature of the building plan will be that there will be a sound proof, hollow tile wall between each apartment and all floors will terminate at the walls, to avoid all vibration, contrary to usual building customs in such courts. The walls of the bathroom will run thru the roof, affording excellent light and ventilation. There will be one large bedroom WINS 7-4 SLESIAN VOTE March 22. "Inside of the Cup" At Fairyland Tonight A remarkable picture filled with excepcially thrilling scenes, the story thoroughly human, will be shown at the Fairyland tonight and Thursday. When Winston Churchill's famous novel of the same name was published in 1913, it was bitterly criticized by clergymen as being an unwarranted attack upon the cloth. While the philosophy of the novel is exploited to some extent in the picture, this necessarily has been subordinated to the dramatic interest of the story itself, the result being a delightfully captivating picture, which will please almost any film fan. The picture was excellently produced by Albert Capellanti; and the players chosen for the various roles are far above the average in point of intelligence and artistry. The impersonations by William P. Carleton, the leading man, and Edith Hallor, leading woman, were brilliantly sustained. Mention should be made of the efficient support given by David Torrence, Jack Bohn and Marguerite Clayton. SHOW COMMITTEE MEETS A meeting of the executive committee for the Valencia Orange Show was held at the C. of C. at 4 o'clock this afternoon. George M. Ross is chairman of the committee.
