Studebaker Breaks 4 Coast Speed Records
In two sensational dashes a Studebaker Light-Six recently broke all records for speed between San Francisco and Los Angeles, setting a new mark for the round trip lowering the coast route record by 2 hours 35 minutes 20 seconds, beating the best time ever before made over the valley route, and leaving "The Lark," most famous of the fast coast express trains, 2 hours 47 minutes and 30 seconds in the rear.
On the first trip the drivers, Hart L. Weaver and James C. Gurley, carried U. S. mail both ways between San Francisco and Los Angeles, being sworn in federal officials upon authority from Washington.
In fact, the journey was made for the purpose of showing that of the motor car in mail quickly.
The round trip, a 864.8 miles was covered debaker in 21 hours 23 trips dawn over the distance of 453.7 miles 10 hours 12 minutes compared with the previous 12 hours 47 minutes established in 1990.

The fact that our new equipment makes us one of the largest machine shops in Orange County is not nearly as important as our ability to complete all work of this nature, both large and small, in the most exacting manner.

purpose of showing the possibilities of the motor car in transporting mail quickly.
The round trip, a distance of 864.8 miles, was covered by the Studebaker in 21 hours 23 minutes. The trip dawn, over the coast route, a distance of 453.7 miles, was made in 10 hours 12 minutes 30 seconds, as compared with the previous best record of 12 hours 47 minutes 50 seconds, established in 1916.
The car and "The Lark" started their dash to Los Angeles at the same time, and it was on this occasion that the Light Six beat the train's schedule by over three and one-half hours.
After hanging up these records, the Studebaker drivers went after the fourth and only remaining speed mark—that of lowering the previous best time over the valley route. They succeeded in making the trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco over this route, a distance of 541.1 miles, in 9 hours 15 minutes 50 seconds, of which time 35 minutes was spent in crossing the ferry to San Francisco. This record breakin gtime was made under difficult weather conditions, the pilots being forced to drive through a dense fog 120 miles of the way.
These record breaking trips also prove how an automobile can stand a long continued run without mechanical trouble. In this case the car was ready to start out on its second trip immediately after finishing the first.
New Plates In Battery Often False Economy
“If separators are worn but the plates are in good condition,” the insertion of new separators can be done at a cost that will give sufficient added life to the battery to warrant the expense,” according to Mr. West, manager of the local Vesta Service Station.
“On the other hand,” said Mr. West, “if either the positive or the negative plates are worn out it is false economy to put in a new set of plates. Usually the positive plates wear out first, while the negative plates may look good. These negative plates have lost their capacity, however, and while the insertion of new positive plates makes a battery that functions it is a poor substitute for a new battery.
“The granular character of the material in the old negative has undergone a change so that the actual capacity has been reduced 75 pet.”
“One of these rebuilt batteries is a source of continued expense because it needs frequent recharging. It's life is dependent upon the negative plates, which may be only a few months. But in any battery, if the plates are in good condition and only the separators worn, the battery can be given many months of added life by use of Vesta Impregnated Mats.”

RIVERSIDE PEOPLE BACK HARBOR HERE
"The people of Riverside are back of Orange-co harbor and will do anything they can to consistently assist in the upbuilding and development of that fine port."
This is the opinion of S. C. Evans, of Riverside, former state senator, during a visit to Orange-co. Evans has made many trips over the harbor and is one of the most enthusiastic boosters for the port to be found in So. Calif — not excepting Orange-co folk.
Evans has known Newport bay for 40 years and when a lad hauled lumber from Old Newport landing, then at the foot of the bluff of which is now the Orange County Country club. Lumber for a three-room California house his father built on Magnolia avenue, between Madison and Jefferson streets. Riverside, was freighted from Newport bay to Riverside by Senator Evans.

Receive First Carload Of The New Maxwells
Turtan and Lunasdan. Maxwell dealers, have received their first carload of 1921 models and present indications that these models are not going to last long.
A touring car has already been delivered to Dan O'Rourke. 201 E. Broadway, and other sales are expected in a few days.
"The Maxwell offers many advantages and improvements this year," states Mr. Turtan, and offers exceptional values in both pleasure and commercial cars.
"The light motor truck is everywhere proving itself to be a paying proposition," according to one successful user.
"Even on the mud, sand and rocky roads of the oil fields, truck owners are realizing excellent profits."
"For example, H. Mendows, who is in the drayage business, says that his Maxwell truck has netted him $3721 in six months, under the most trying road conditions.
"And R. F. Blacklock, operating a Maxwell between the city and the oil fields, says that he makes $27 on every sixty-mile trip and has earned as high as $804 in one month."
SAVAGE MANAGERS MEET
The annual meeting of the branch managers and district managers of the Spreckels "Savage" Tire Co. of San Diego, was in session at the home office from March 1st to 5th inclusive. Mr. Raymond V. Morris, vice president and general manager, opened the meeting with an address of welcome after which a program for the week was given to each representative.
Every subject bearing on the various departments was discussed. Questionnaires were distributed that fully covered every important subject of interest to the branch and district managers.
Enthusiastic interest was very much in evidence when it came to the examination of the new Savage cord tire. It was said that the scientific construction of this quality tire was a revelation to those who had the opportunity of seeing it in all of its phases of construction.

Before coming here he was employed by the state in various capacities, being for three years assistant superintendent of the Ione Industrial School. Lumber for a three-room California house his father built on Magnolia avenue, between Madison and Jefferson streets, Riverside, was freighted from Newport bay to River-side by Senator Evans.
"The bay offers an ideal port for any craft that can enter with safety," declared The Riversider. "The work that is being done there is the nucleus for the development oef one of the best and safest harbors along the coast in my opinion.
"With the development of a small amount of commercial tonnage in and out of the harbor the government no doubt will give the port recognition by appropriating funds for its further development. It should assist in the jetty work even now.
There is no doubt that operation of a line of ships to carry the produce of Southern California to Atlantic seaboard points can be made a big success under cooperative effort of grower associations."
Should the Calif. Fruit Growers exchange develop a line of boats for shipping citrus fruits to Atlantic coast points either as a project of its own or in cooperation with other associations of growers. I am confident that producers in Riverside and San Befhardino counties would be more than satisfied with the selection of Orange county harbor as the home port for a part of the fleet, and all of it were the harbor deep enough to admit vessels of heavy tonnage.
In my opinion, were a line of ships of the size that could enter the harbor to operate from that port independent of the association line, little difficulty would be experienced in developing cargoes that would make operation profitable. I anticipate that in time freight and passenger boats will make the port one of regular call.
The possibility of it becoming great in a commercial way is unlimited and in time this fact will become recognized by far-sighted business men."

The Most Efficient Tractor in America
The Most Efficient Tractor in America
The Model 'F' Bates Steel Mule Tractor
—This new Model Tractor embodies all the essential features which make the machine ideal for working in citrus fruit lands and vineyards; also for plowing out sugar beets, without any changes or additions to the tractor.
—Its flexible construction allows it to run smoothly under all conditions over the roughest places without injury. The front wheels make easy steering, great oscillation of tracks, and comfortable riding.
—The special new short-turning brakes, viz: V-grooved large pulley with bronze metal shoes, operating in oil inside gear case, permit the operator to make the short turns necessary to properly and successfully meet all these hard conditions. This construction will last indefinitely.
—It is a matter of record that the Midwest Tractor Engine develops more horsepower than any motor of similar dimensions, in most instances More Power than other engines of greater displacement. This new engine with lubrication based upon load, not speed, floating all bearings in a film of oil, with extra large crankshaft and bearings, represents the ultimate in tractor engine design and performance.
—The Bates Crawler Shoes have hardened steel parts and are 100 per cent oversized; that's why they last for years.
The Tracks Are Absolutely Guaranteed for One Year Against Wear and Breakage Under All Soil and Working Conditions.
