CITRUS SHIPMENT BY STEAMER WOULD SAVE CO. $2,000,000 Declaring his belief that citrus growers of Orange-co would gladly contribute to the improvement of Newport harbor $2,000,000 that he believes is now being collected from them in rail freights in excess of what they should pay under a legitimate freight rate. D. Eymann Huff, manager of the Hawes ranch properties at El Modena today gave unequivocal approval to the plan for organizing a water carrying line by associations of farmers, as has been suggested in interviews. He said that a reduction of 50 cents a hundredweight from present rail rates would effect a saving of $2,000,000 to citrus growers of Orange county for the 1921 crop alone. The lemon rate formerly was $1 per hundred and oranges $1.15. The rates were advanced twice, 25 per cent and 33 1/3 per cent. He believes a reduction of 50 cents in the rail rate should be made at once. The recent experiment of the California Fruit exchange in shipping lemons and oranges from Southern California to the Atlantic coast and substantial reduction of water freight rates made by steamship companies have stirred the citrus growers of So. Calif. in activities looking to the promotion of water transportation by the building or chartering of a line of steamships to carry products from Southern California to Atlantic seaboard ports. Orange-co growers are becoming deeply interested in the movement and everyone who has discussed the matter at all has been frank to admit that the institution of a boat service could be made to redound to the benefit of Newport harbor were the proper effort put forth. They comment on the absence of a county-wide organization for advancing the interests of Newport harbor in the way of development of commercial enterprises. The present agitation for a fruit carrying line of would offer a big field for excellent work in behalf of the harbor were such an organization now in existence. They point out that this field of operation is outside the scope of activities of the Orange-co harbor commission and that the interests of the harbor in this project, as well as in any other worth-white endeavor, are being neglected by lack of organization on the part of Orange county people. With the discussion of this phase, it is very likely that someone will take the initiative in calling anumber of prominent men of the county into conference for the purpose of discussing the formation of some kind of an association to devote itself to looking after development features for the county harbor. What is believed will prove to be one of the most important reports ever submitted to the California Fruit exchange by a committee was scheduled to be presented at the regular weekly meeting of the directors in Los Angeles. This report was prepared by a committee appointed some time ago to make a thorough investigation into costs of building or chartering vessels for a fruit line and make recommendations to the board. A.E. Bennett, director representing the Orange County Fruit exchange on the board, is a member of the committee. The committee has been very thorough and it is said that its findings embrace a report covering fifteen typewritten pages. Bennett was in directors of the Fruit exchange a following the views of a project for institute ships. It is said the committee has pressed it has met enthusiastic endorsement. "Co-operation of citations of production of a ship line I commend itself to said D. Eymann Huff." "In my opinion she will have the effect freight rates. A reliable. Transportable reduced if the agencies try of California they should." "A reduction in of fifty cents a would mean a savings to the citrus groe county alone, to say would be saved pr commodities." "I am convinced fruit producers owe they to receive fifty cents on the freight, would chee saving to complete of Orange county sum of money we cajor that would be anywhere and one facility tions capacity, if it vessels of that size growers under a line California Fruit Grow or an association organizations." "The possibilities active effort are most sanguine exnstment today, in my." "I would like to be established and Oran made the one big and departure of projects can be put on." "A reduction in rail freight rates of fifty cents a hundred pounds would mean a saving of $2,000,000 to the citrus growers of Orange county alone, to say nothing of what would be saved producers of other commodities." "I am convinced that the citrus fruit producers of Orange county, were they to receive a reduction of fifty cents on the hundred pounds of freight, would cheerfully give that saving to complete the development of Orange county harbor. With that sum of money we could build a harbor that would be equal to the best anywhere and one that would readily provide facilities for boats of 7500 tons capacity. If it is deemed that vessels of that size are beat for the growers under a line operated by the California Fruit Growers' exchange or an association of all producer organizations." "The possibilities of such co-operative effort are beyond even the most sanguine expectation of the most ardent supporter of the movement today, in my opinion." "I would like to see such a line established and Orange county harbor made the one big port for arrival and departure of the boats. Both projects can be put over, in my opinion." Taggart whereby Taggart was to assume charge of the Richfield store at Atwood for a period of several months, and receive half of the net profits as compensation, G. A. Waterman of Anaheim declares that with the exception of $144.73 Taggart never accounted for his share of the profits during the time he had charge of the store. Upon this allegation Waterman filed suit and the case came up for trial before Superior Judge West this morning. After being informed briefly of the circumstances Judge West decided that it is a matter for a referee. Leonard Evans, attorney for the defendants in the action, and Bishop and Wellington, attorneys for the plaintiffs, mutually agreed to call W. F. Suddaby, expert accountant employed by the Smart & Final company, as a referee. All evidences will be submitted before Suddaby who will then make a report on the issues involved. Judge West announced that the case will be subject to call on the calendar at any time. According to Waterman, Taggart, Mrs. Taggart and their 7-year-old son took charge of the store April 7, 1920, and continued in charge until Sept. 13. Waterman alleges that during that period the net profits were $2,224.98. He asserts that his share of the profits is $1,112.49. Waterman asks that the co-partnership be dissolved and that he have judgment for $987.76. In an answer to Waterman's suit Taggart asserts that the net profits of the store while he was in charge were $2,819.65 instead of $2,244.98. He further claims that Waterman has been paid a full half of the net profits, or $2,409.83. Taggart also alleges that the agreement made between himself and Waterman was amended by mutual consent by which it was agreed that from May 1, 1920, Waterman would pay the expense and cost of hiring one delivery boy. The defendant asks judgment against the plaintiff for $563.86 with interest and cost of suit, claiming that sum is still due him in the final accounting. COUNTY COMMITTEE TAKES OVER CAMP Thru the hearty cooperation of friends of the boys in the County Y. M. C. A., the camp equipment located in the Santiago Canyon above Madjeska's Home is being transferred today from the Long Beach Y. W. C. A., which has held it four year, over to the Orange-co committee of the Y. M. C. A.. The property which is located on the edge of the Cleveland Forest Reserve consists of a little over three acres. It is equipped with a splendid cabin with fireplace, window-seats, etc., a well-equipped kitchen, good store room and four large tents with floors. There is also cooking and serving equipment for 35 as well as the spring beds and mattresses. Altogether it is one of the most complete little camp sites to be found anywhere. The Y Secretaries were looking around last spring for a place where they could pull over-night camps, and this spot was located. Since that time, over 200 boys have gone in on little over-night trips, while the girls' gym class of the Orange H. S. availed itself of permission to use it. An option to purchase was given on the committee last summer and when the men became convinced that it was the place they needed for their work, a quiet canvass was made of the friends of the Association with the result that the full amount of $1800 was secured. It is the plan of the County Committee to make of this camp site the Markets L. A.
