FRIEND SAVES ROSS FROM TRIP TO JAIL "A friend in need is a friend indeed," so 'tis said, and Fred Rose found it to be true in his case when he was pulled off a freight train at Fullerton by Joe Marillo, deputy marshal, who, roughly speaking, is the deuce on hoboes. Thirty days in the county jail at Santa Ana starred him in the face, because he had not the wherewithal to pay his way to Los Angeles. Then an old friend "just happened to drop in," and Mr. Rose got a hearty meal and a free ride to Los Angeles. Joe Donfin, caught sleeping in a box car, was not so fortunate. He was given 30 nights free lodging at the county jail. The two developments were first, conclusive proof by actual test that water shipments of citrus fruits to the Atlantic seaboard could be successfully made and, second, the reduction on water rates on lemons, Los Angeles to New York, from $1.05 per hundred to 70 cents per hundred- NEWLYWED PINCHED FOR SPEEDING AUTO Wow! Mr. Harris was "showing off" his driving ability and the speeding of his car to his bride at the rate of 43 miles an hour in San Diego-co when all of a sudden a motor cop ordered him to "stop!" He did, but was released on a ball of $10, which he will forfeit. According to the Graphic, Soviet Russia is undergoing a serious internal revolution, due to the increasing dissatisfaction of the Russian people. Several years ago Professor Walter Athecarn of Boston University published a programme of religious education for the entire nation which was to organize each community for religious education much after the plan of the public school supplementing the work of the local Sunday schools. His plan has been worked out pretty thoroughly in Malden, Mass., a suburban community near Boston and has since been tried out in many other places. It is known as the Malden plan and has at last been adopted by the International S. S. Association and will be made nationwide wide. It is purposeful put it on in California this year starting in Orange-co. "The plan includes several features. A council of leading citizens is formed who secure an educator to give his entire time to working on the plan. It is his duty to get back the minds of the community that total education need and is to use this council for that purpose. The council is to be incorporated and work through a Board of Religious Education which is to be co-ordained with the Board of Education in the community. This Board would work out a regular curriculum supplement the work of the Sunday schools and provide a training school for the education of teachers. The work will be done week days under the best of educational conditions." "It is likely that the whole plan will eventually call for a readjustment of the public school curriculums and time schedule but that, entirely feasible and really desirable if our American education is really meet the needs of the ongoing citizens. At the same time the plan will in no way invade the American principal of the separatism of church and state for all the work of religious education will be done apart from public funds, buildings and control." "The whole proposal is receiving careful consideration from a committee of laymen and also from committee of pastors. If it is adopted for Orange-co it will be put into operation at the beginning of the next school year."
