PHONE EMPLOYES DANCE
The Orange County Telephone Employes dance at Campbell's hall, Orange, on last Thursday evening was acknowledged as "the dance" of the whole series given.
The committee composed of Miss Bertha Peterkin, C. H. Adams, Miss Fern Warner, Mrs. George Harris and A. L. Tomblin, with the assistance of the other employes of the exchange, prepared an entertainment which was much enjoyed by everyone present.
Every exchange in the county united in the affair, the object of the dances being to foster a family feeling among the employees of the county.
Pepper boughs transformed the hall into a beautiful bower, the lights arranged to give the moonlight effects, when the ever popular moonlight waltz was given. Japanese lanterns, red hearts, red paper streamers, and pennants added to the beauty of the scene.
Those who did not care to dance found cards and other games for their amusements. Mrs. F. L. Chapline gave some very pleasing songs, and Chapman's four piece orchestra furnished the music for the dance.

One hundred and sixty were present, some guests but most of them employes. The favors were small boxes of candy and each guest also received a number, some of these being prize winners. Miss Lilly Chaffee, chief operator in Santa Ana received the box of candy for the ladies and E. A. Beard, manager of the local office the one for men.
Coffee, cake and punch were served during the evening, and it was well on 1 o'clock before the merry crowd broke up and the good nights were said, thus bringing to a close one of the most pleasant evenings ever spent.
EBELL MUSIC SECTION MEETS
The Music Section of the Ebell Society held its regular meeting in the Masonic Temple club rooms yesterday afternoon. There was a good crowd present, notwithstanding the rain, and the meeting was one of the best ever held by the section.
In honor of the 150th anniversary of Beethoven, the afternoon was given over entirely to his compositions, and a wonderfully interesting and instructive program was rendered.
The records provided by Mr. Danz for use on the Brunswick phonograph were especially fine. The first number was Minuet in G string quartet, Brunswick phonograph; this was very fine and listened to with a great deal of interest.
Mrs. G. H. Goodale read a paper on the life and works of the famous composer. It was more in the nature of a talk and was very interesting. The Fifth Symphony, Brunswick phonograph; This was followed by a paper on the Human Side of Bethoven, given by Mrs. A. C. Pearson, which was splendid. Mrs. Ruth L. Seitz played and gave a short analysis of Sonota. This proved very pleasing to the audience. The Current Musical events were reviewed by Mrs. W. B. Holland in a very pleasant and entertaining manner. Overture "Lenora" on the Brunswick and the Pastoral Symphony on the Brunswick closed the program.

SANTA ANA REJECTS CHARTER PROJECT
Santa Ana's people voted, 1145 to 814,yesterday to retain the present form of city government and to throw into the discard the charter form which had been prepared by a board of freeholders.
The result caused great surprise, since the change was favored by the Chamber of Commerce, the Merchants and Manufacturers' Association, the Kilwanis Club and the Rotarians. The city's only newspaper was strong for the plan, and many of the ministers had given it their unqualified endorsement. In fact, few persons doubted that the measure would carry.
Under the proposed charter, the tax rate of the city would have been raised from $1 to $1.35,and it seems that this fact was used with telling effect by the few who opposed the change.
It is stated that it will be necessary now to raise the assessed valuation of Santa Ana property so that money needed to care for outstanding obligations may be collected.
The change proposed contemplates

HELD UP BY MAN WITH KNIVES
That he was held up by two masked men, who were armed with large knives and robbed of $10 shortly after midnight was the story told by Trinidad Mendibles,a Mexican at Santa Ana police headquarterers.
One of the bandits,Mendibles said, was leaning against a fence and the other was hiding behind a telephone pole.Mendibles said the man behind the pole sprang upon him suddenly and struck him with his knife.
The blade, according to Mendibles, slashed his clothing and seretched the skin below his heart. The force of the blow winded Mendibles and he fell to the sidewalk.
He says both of the holdup men then went through his pockets."
New York Letter by Lucy Jeanne Price
NEW YORK, Feb. 22—A cow kicked over a lamp and Chicago was swept by a never-to-be-forgotten fire. The other night on her way home from a movie, a New York woman paid 65 cents for a pumpkin pie and fifteen of the largest women's organizations in the city have delved into the question of the baking industry, with a determination to thresh things out thoroughly and completely. The purchaser of the pie, informed Mrs. Louis Melzmiller, deputy commissioner of markets, of the extortionate 65 cents. Mrs. Welzmiller interviewed the baker. He explained that it was the supper-after-the-movie habit that killed his prices. "People have got to stopping in regularly to get food for after-the-picture-suppers at home," he said. "That means I have to keep my fires going all the evening and pay my bakers and clerks overtime rates to stay here. That pumpkin pie cost me 60 cents." It seemed plausible, but the deputy commissioner decided it was a good time to get women interested in the whole proposition. So five big baking companies are to prepare data and answer questions for an aroused woman-kind.
The toy balloon men of the city are sold out. And their merchandise isn't in the hands of children, either. Serious business men and haughty chauffeurs are making the down town route look like a carnival these days, with bright-colored balloons tied to either end of the windshields. The motorists explain the outburst of color as "silent protest against the price of gasoline, which refuses to take a drop similar to that of other commodities." But the balloon men tell you that it's just an excuse for suppressed childishness to crop out in grown-ups that have to find some excuse for it every time they give way to it.
"It is time for us to stop using printer's ink defining boundaries, abroad and to use it for finding markets abroad," said Julius H. Reiter, president of the Credit Guide Bankers' Commercial Asn and publisher of the favorite of a passed generation, in which Francis Wilson first won fame, proved such a success when it was revived here this winter, that it has been decided to make it into a photoplay with Francis Wilson and DeWolf Hopper co-stars, just as they are in the present production.
New York business women whose work means regular hours in an office are getting together into little groups to discuss the possibility of procuring official recognition of shopping as a vital part of the business woman's life. "Not only do all women have to shop sometimes and take a fair amount of time for it," explains one of the leaders in the time-for-shopping movement, "but business women are under special necessity of keeping well-groomed. Some of our employers are honest enough to admit that it is not only to our advantage but to theirs," to have us smartly 'kept up.' We can't do this with a hurried dash into a shop at a jammed lunch hour. So we are going. In all seriousness, to propose that every woman in every New York office be given one hour or two hours or one afternoon or some definite amount of time, once or twice every month in which to go and buy clothes and accessories that will enhance her charm and do justice to her position in her business world."
Cruelty to lions was the stupendous sounding charge made against slender Mme Adgies in the magistrates' court the other day. "She sobbed at the thought of it." "The poor dears" she exclaimed. "They would not say that Why. I am so fond of them. Not for anything would I hurt them." And then something as an afterthought, she added: "I make my living with them. However, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals, rather enjoying the novelty of defending a brace on flippers after expending so many years on cats and horses, insisted that cruelty it was to keep the kings of the forest in boxes in a garage. Various other witnesses who came to protest on the side of the S.P.C.A. were those who lived within roaring distance of the garage.

Mid-Central Has the Oil
There is now no question that Mid-Central's ground is capable of yielding an excellent commercial well! We have so far been highly successful—in securing properties, in financing and in sinking our well without accident or delay to 4110 feet, where the well now stands cemented.
BUT—the great outstanding fact is this: MID-CENTRAL'S well has already passed through
55 Feet of Rich Oil Sand!
This sand has been pronounced capable of yielding an unusually large well, as it carries a heavy saturation of oil. Indications are that vastly larger production will be secured at greater depth, and this sand has been cased off, in favor of the deeper formations' where we confidently look for a well producing not less than 1000 barrels daily! Do not overlook the fact that even our first

This sand has been pronounced capable of yielding an unusually large well, as it carries a heavy saturation of oil. Indications are that vastly larger production will be secured at greater depth, and this sand has been cased off, in favor of the deeper formations where we confidently look for a well producing not less than 1000 barrels daily!
