Saturday, February 19, 1921 MOTOR CRAFT RAPS EDEN'S TIRE TAX The Motor Dealers' craft of the Orange County Auto trades association is officially on record as opposed to Senator Walter Eden's bill proposing a 10 per cent tax on tires and to the bills of Senator Ed Sample and Assemblyman H. B. Ream proposing a tax on gasoline, following a meeting at Santa Ana at which resolutions protesting their adoption were passed. The meeting, which was attended by practically every representative dealer of the county, was held at the New Rossmore hotel, and was preceded by a 6:30 dinner. The action was taken following an address by David R. Faries, attorney for the Auto Club of So. Calif. Faries treated on features of the new motor vehicle law submitted to the state legislature and upon bills introduced that more or less effect the operation of motor vehicles. The craft is opposed to any kind of additional tax on motorists, but took the position that if a tax must be levied it should not exceed one-half cent per gallon on gasoline, on condition that the money derived be devoted exclusively to building and maintenance of highways. Faries declared that the conference committee which recommended certain changes in the motor vehicle law as provided in the new bill is permanent and will not cease of motor laws being vending of each new legal. He declared that the frequent amendments to the fact that the motors is an activity taking from year to year, problems that must be tried in the proposed law remain better classified and available for reference. He considers the bill C. L. Irwin as one of those bills on motor legislation the senate. It provides owners pay an annual fee on load capacity in addition license fee. This about $100 per month in the operation of a five-year. "We should see that are made to observe respect right but we should run them off the hill Faries." "I think the bill pre- per cent tax on tires is continued "Why should of motor vehicles be paid special taxation to provide with funds? Why should be imposed on shoes else? The auto owner pays taxes and he pays a lot others do not. The motor dealers should stand up legs and not permit them." Faries gave a comprehensive view of the bills directed bikes and trucks and the new motor vehicle fore the legislature. Too Much Economic A GREAT PROGRAM OF SPORTS. 5 HEAT RACES WORLD FAMOUS DRIVERS. He declared that the necessity for frequent amendments to the law lies in the fact that the automobile business is an activity that is developing from year to year, bringing new problems that must be taken care of in the proposed law regulations are better classified, and more quickly available for reference. He considers the bill of Senator J. C. L. Irwin as one of the most violent bills on motor legislation before the senate. It provides that truck owners pay an annual fee of $200 per ton load capacity in addition to the regular license fee. This would mean about $100 per month state tax for the operation of a five-ton truck. "We should see that truck owners are made to observe regulations that are right but we should not attempt to run them off the highways," said Faries. "I think the bill proposing a 10 per cent tax on tires is unfair," he continued. "Why should the owners of motor vehicles be picked upon for special taxation to provide the state with funds? Why should not the tax be imposed on shoes and everything else? The auto owner pays city and county taxes and he pays a license fee that others do not. The motor owners and dealers should stand up on their hand legs and not permit the 'buck' to be them." Faries gave a comprehensive review of the bills directed at automobiles and trucks and provisions of the new motor vehicle law now before the legislature. TOO Much Economy May OLDSMOBILE FOUR CREATES SENSATION "Other details in the construction and finish of the new Oldsmobile Four have not been sacrificed in order to develop power and strength, and while it is creating new sensations on the grades each day, it is also winning approval for its riding comfort and beauty of lines," states Mr. Gilnette, manager of the local Oldsmobile agency. Recent deliveries of this model have been made to O. P. Rust, Anaheim, and S. S. Cox, Placentia. Last Saturday in a sensational hill-climbing feat the Oldsmobile Four, already holder of several power test records, beat its own best previous mark by climbing the famous Cahuenga pass in high gear and carrying 14 passengers. A few days ago the same stock car climbed the grade in the high gear carrying 10 passengers, and this feat was considered a notable achievement. The car was strictly stock in every respect, all stock gearing, with top up and windshield on—in other words, the car was exactly in the shape in which an owner would use it, so that the test shows exactly the performance ability of the car. The total weight of the passengers was 2282 pounds and the car easily negotiated the grade in the high gear, topping the hit at 21 miles per hour. A speed ability of 60 miles an hour is also claimed for the new and sensational performing four on the straightaway. NEW MAXWELL WILL ing his order until late in the year. It is estimated that should the average annual production of new cars be maintained this year there will be less than 700,000 machines left for first buyers, after the replacement and export markets have been taken care of. Not in recent years have there been as few as 700,000 buyers. Taggart Making Big Garage Improvements The Taggart Motor Co. is making some elaborate improvements to its display and office rooms on No. Los Angeles-st. The office has been moved into a separate room and the entire sales room will now be given over to display space for the various Chevrolet and Sheridan models. The floor of the display room has been repainted and the walls retinted, making it one of the most attractive auto display floors in the county. WITHIN MILE OF TEN-DAY JAIL SENTENCE One of the 17 speeders who appeared before Justice of the Peace Cox yesterday is thanking his lucky stars that the tag which the traffic officer handed him showed a speed of 49 miles and not fifty. This man is T. L. Shinn of Santa Ana and he paid a fine of $25. Had Shinn been making 50 he would in all probability have spent ten days in jail. For Justice Cox has made it a "stand pat" rule that all speedsters who are brought in on a charge of "doing more than fifty". The auto owner pays city and county taxes and he pays a license fee that others do not. The motor owners and dealers should stand up on their hind legs and not permit the 'buck' to be them." Faries gave a comprehensive review of the bills directed at automobiles and trucks and provisions of the new motor vehicle law now before the legislature. Too Much Economy May Prove Costly to Motor "The spasm of economy which has hit the country has gone to as much of an extreme as the spending jag we were on for a couple of years. An example of the false and foolish economy that some people are practicing can be seen in the failing off of the auto repair business," declares one of the leading motor journals. "Nothing could be more obvious than that you lose money, not save it, by refusing to have necessary repairs made on an automobile that is not in proper condition and yet that is just what a lot of people are doing. The longer you let a thing go of that nature, the more it is going to cost to get it fixed and it will have to be fixed some day unless the car is to be scrapped." "The old adage of a stitch in time saves nine can be applied to the auto very aptly—just change it to a dollar spent in time saves nine. "Whenever any part of your electrical system seems to be 'out of tune,' have it examined, as oftimes a minor repair will make it O. K. and if it is allowed to remain in this condition a great amount of labor and material may be required to make it O. K. again. Drive your car into the Auto Electric Maintenance Co., at Los Angeles and Chestnut-sts, and they will gladly inspect the electrical system on your car and tell you the real condition. This inspection is absolutely FREE to you. Johnson, 1001 Hillcrest avenue, Fullerton, had entered our salesroom, she decided the Chandler was the only car for her purposes and drove away a seven passenger touring model," states R. C. Goodcell, manager of the Chandler and Cleveland Sales and Service Station, West Center-st, Anaheim. This I think, is the record for the least time in making a sale. Mrs. Johnson told one of her neighbors that she contemplated the purchase of an automobile and she was advised to be sure and see the Chandler before buying." A dispatch model was also sold to A. H. Brown, superintendent of the Union Oil Company at Brea. The car owned by Mr. Brown previous to purchasing the new sport creation was a Chandler and its service and performance was so satisfactory that no arguments were needed to convince him of the wisdom of his second choice. SHORTAGE OF CARS IS PREDICTED SOON Will there be an automobile short- the care that their properly should have; some realize but facilities are not at hand to properly protect them without loss of time and unnecessary expense. Therefore, the automobile world of this section will be pleased to learn of the announcement that Neuno and Bock, on So., Los Angeles-st, are now distributors for rims and parts for all automobiles. Barly worn, poorly fitting, squeaking rims are annoying as well as dangerous; much tire trouble is the result of faulty rim construction. Garage men of this district are already connecting up with this specialized service. Others will prevent trouble and tire expense and the unnecessary wearing out of their car if they consult this firm which always advertises "everything for the auto." Production Gaining In Auto Factories Daily "Production is gaining every day in most of the automobile plants," says Paul Taggart, "and manufacturers are beginning to think seriously about their ability to meet the big demand for cars that is indisputably indicated in an increasing interest on the part of the general public." "The world has been on short rations about as long as it can stand it. Men who feel the need of an extraordinary effort in business, are finding that they can come back faster and quicker with the aid of a car. The world will speed up from now on to make up for time lost during the dull days of the last few months. Nothing picks up speed like an automobile. "A survey of the auto manufacturing field shows a resumption of activity in the great automotive centers, which, while small compared to peak performances in the past, indicates that the industry is coming out of hibernation and gathering headway for normal business. "Local automobile dealers report many signs of reviving popular interest in automobile and truck lines."
