AERIAL MAIL SPANS THE CONTINENT SWIFTLY
Letters are being carried from Los Angeles to New York in less than three days how, by combined rail and aerial mail service. This time will be cut as the all-air service across the continent is developed.
Soon the two-day limit will be reached and it is not at all visionary to predict that, before very long, twenty-four hours will suffice to carry letters from ocean to ocean, in regular aerial service.
Evolution of aerial mails is of the greatest business importance. It means such a saving of time—such expediting of business—as is sure to redound to the tremendous benefit of the whole Nation. It means that letter mail will cross the continent soon in one-half the time formerly required and, ere long, in one-

Already there is definite and busness-like talk of aerial mail service across the Atlantic. That, too,
soon will be instituted, without doubt.
From California to London or Paris soon will require but three or four days for the passage of letters by aerial mail. The possibilties of development along this line will be of the greatest importance and advantage to business.
SPARE THE people of California, any mischievous legislation at Sacramento!
RED, WHITE and Blue are fast colors in the United States, in peace; waranted not to run, in war.
SAVE SOME, as you go along. What you save will be needed, perhaps, some day. And the habit of thrift in itself is inspiring.
THE STATE of Ohio would have no objection to being set aside as a permanent national reserve for the propagation of presidential timber.
WHILE Mr. Harding was catching festive fish in Florida' waters, Mrs. Harding was making some good catches for her white house wardrobe.
FORTY-THREE million deaths due to the world war! Great God! Is not the world ripe for an ending of such butchery—for settling disputes by reason, rather than by slaughter?
LITTLE WILLIE is ready to invoke blessings upon the head of the scientist who worked out a fertilizer that will kill weeds in lawn and gardens.
That saves little W. many a potential backache.
THE MAN or woman who loves children and frequently romps with them, entering into play with the complete abandon that they do, has come nearer than did Ponce de Leon to finding the Fountain of Perpetual Youth.
SCIENTISTS HAVE evolved a fertilizer that will make grass grow, but kill weeds. Now let them devise ways and means to harness the gopher, hitch him to a plow and train him to cultivate flowers and vegetables, instead of ruining them.
WARFARZ IS costly, not alone while it is raging, but it makes peace costly for a long period following the cessation of hostilities. This nation, and every nation engaged in the world war, will be paying war taxes, in some form, for a long, long time.
THE PUBLIC will be more lenient toward that Charles G. Daxes profanity because of the direction in which it was aimed—at congress and at inefficiency in government departments. The United States army should not be the scapegoat of blunders and incompetency among civilians in high position.
THE CONSCIENTIOUS, capably-edited newspaper presents news at its true value, intelligently determined. It does not distort exaggerate or sensationalize news. Newspapers of this type strive to the utmost to give news upon a reasonable estimate of its merits, so that the reader may judge, from the display given, the relative values in the occurrences of the day throughout the world. The news pages of a newspaper should be a faithful mirror of the world for the day.
IN THE matter of armament, as in other things, the United States will be moderate. It will not go to the extreme of maintaining a vast standing army, at colossal expense, creating burdens and unrest here at home, drawing large numbers of strong men from peaceful pursuits, and creating the suspicion abroad that this nation has aggressional designs. Nor, on the other hand, will the standing army be cut to such small proportions that it would be ridiculous before the world.
whether or not the children were school and the children did care. That was the usual condition.
"I have never had to resort to law to compel the parents to take children to school, though I had to come very near to making rests."
"When the parents undershafted by reason of having an tendance officer... School district receive state appropriations on average attendance. In a number districts, notably Delhi, Garve Grove and Savanna, the percent of increase has been remarkable."

The Village Gossip
To recover an army blouse with badge attached denoting service on the Mexican border which he dropped on the Santiago Peak trail nearly eight months ago and which he had given up for lost, was the experience this week of Dr. H. J. Howard, son of Judge J. S. Howard.
Dr. Howard hiked to the peak last Fourth of July, and somewhere on the trip down the Trabuco trail the blouse broke from its fastenings on his pack and fell. On reaching the foot of the trail, Howard discovered his loss and asked two upward-bound hikers to pick up the blouse and leave it with the forest ranger or with the fire lookout on the peak. At the time, Howard neglected to give his name to the two other hikers, who were Henry and John Hettebrecht of Orange, and did not learn their names, but he did leave his address with the ranger at the foot of the trail.
Nothing more was heard of the lost articles until a few weeks ago, when Dr. Howard received word that Ranger E. W. Scarey had the blouse in charge. The Hettebrechts had given the blouse to Scarey and this week it reached Howard, having been mailed by Scarey through the El Toro post office. Howard served in the hospital corps at Camp Lewis during the war.
No more playing "hookey!"
The county attendance officer will get you if you don't watch out!
As a result of the activities of W. C. Roberts, whose duty it is to see that the kiddies in the county go to school, there are today in Orange county very few children of school age who are not attending their classes.
The attendance in some of the schools has been increased to such an extent that the schools are crowded. At Delhi a new teacher has been added, and another teacher would be added if there were money available for paying the salary.
"The greatest problem in getting school attendance was among the Mexicans, of course," said Roberts today. "The parents didn't care out the world. The news pages of a newspaper should be a faithful mirror of the world for the day."
IN THE matter of armament, as in other things, the United States will be moderate. It will not go to the extreme of maintaining a vast standing army, at colossal expense, creating burdens and unrest here at home, drawing large numbers of strong men from peaceful pursuits, and creating the suspicion abroad that this nation has aggressive designs. Nor, on the other hand, will the standing army be cut to such small proportions that it would be ridiculous before the world, and negligible as a nucleus for military defense.
