TWELVE YEARS IN PRACTICE Phone 413 204 Fisher Bldg., Anaheim THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA News of Oil Fields (Huntington Beach Field) There are two new rigs in the field this week, being B-2, about one-belt mile southwest of B-1 and about the same distance from Bolsa No. 1; and the National Exploration Co., about one-half mile west of the Surf well, on a 60-acre tract owned by W. T. Newland of Huntington Beach and Leo Borchard of Santa Ana. Standard Oil Co. The work of redrilling the Torrance well, near the Bolsa Chica club house, is progressing at about 1500 feet. Before the cave-in this well was 3900 feet. Lumber is on the ground for C-1. This is located about 400 feet west and south of the Bolsa Chica well. The work of erecting a rig for B-2 is going forward rapidly, at about Thirty-eighth-st. a short distance from Ocean ave. The derricks for D-1 and E-1, on Twenty-third-st at Mansion and Edgeware, have been completed and rigging up is proceeding. The work of drilling in the well on the Surf Land & Water Co. lease, east of the city limits, continues rather slowly, on account of the depth of the hole and the small tools being used. The drilling is being done through a string of six-inch casing. The showing continues excellent. This well is now about 3675 feet deep. A-7, an offset well to Bolsa No. 1, about 400 feet east and south, is cemented at about 2080 feet, 10½-inch casing being used for the water string. A-1 is drilling at about 600 feet. Bolsa No. 3 is going at about 1800 in blue shale, showing some gas. A-4, north of Reservoir Hill, is being drilled in with rotary tools and looks as though it might be the biggest producer in the field, outside of Bolsa No. 1. Screen casing is being delivered on the rack, and this well may soon be on production. The water was shut off in this well at 2852 feet, and it is now about Sunday afternoon, at a depth of 4110, one of the deep wells in the field, about 1100 below the first string of casing. The formation before setting the last string of casing was brown sandy shale, showing an encouraging amount of gas and some oil colors. The setting of this string of casing, however, does not indicate that the oil sands have been tapped, but the belief is held by those in charge of the work that the sands are not far below where the well is now cemented. This well was drilled to this extreme depth by the Orange County Drilling Co., under the supervision of R. W. Edens of Fullerton, in record time. It is a big job to successfully drill a well as deep as the Mid-Central and obtain perfect circulation for the cementing of the hole, and Mr. Edens is to be congratulated upon his success. Texcal Oil & Refining Co. The work of moving the derrick for the drilling of a new well on the Dana Burks lease, north of Reservoir Hill has been completed and the new hole was spudded in Thursday morning. But little progress has been made on the Hugh Grant lease, a short distance southeast of the Burk well, due to the extra work in moving the old rig. Vista Del Mar Oil Co. A water test is expected at well No. 1. Shoemaker community today. Considerable trouble has been experienced from sand being heaved up into the hole by gas pressure. There appears to be no doubt, however, about the development of a well if the water has been shut off. The derrick for the well on the Henry R. Dabney lease, on lots owned by S. A. Moore, W. D. Seely and D. O. Huston of Huntington Beach, has been completed. Miley-Keck Oil Co. The next producer in the field will be the well drilled by the Miley-Keck Oil Co., across from the high school. About 400 feet of screen casing was run in and oil will probably be flowing tonight or tomorrow. This well is 2580 feet deep, and indications are that it will be a big producer. Texas Holding Co. Boilers have been delivered on the Obarr-Scely-Huston lease, east of Reservoir Hill. HOTEL VALENCIA GUESTS / Guests at Hotel Valencia yesterday included: P. Gieben, New York; C. F. Then come to the New Grand theatre tonight to see "Sex." The climax of "Sex" is said to be the most tremendous scene ever staged for the film camera and its finale is surprising and unusual. Tom Moore will be seen tonight in "Hold Your Horse" at the New Fairyland theatre. It is adapted from the famous Saturday Evening Post story, "Canavan," by Rupert Hughes. Weoman Social Dance, Monday nite L.O.O.F.Hall, Fellings Orchestra. COLBY'S JUNKET Secretary of State Colby is back from South America, where he traveled in regal splendor, with a battleship to house his party. For successful posing the camera men have never had better subjects than the Colby party. The commercial interests of North and South America have been reaching toward one another in efforts to "get together" for many years. Mr. Colby doubtless felt that during his brief tenure of office he could be spared from Washington to help promote better feeling between the peoples of the western hemisphere and he therefore organized a junket that traveled fast enough to get him home before any positive announcement was made as to who would be his successor. The best minds in Washington are agreed that the development of an American merchant marine furnishes the only solution that can be brought to bear in solving this great problem of our foreign trade. A big start was made during the war, but the emergencies that came with fighting left the same trail of waste in the story of shipping that is found in every phase of war activities. The result is that the Shipping Board has become a sort of football, and everyone that has wanted to start something, takes a kick at it; whereas there is doubtless no peace-time agency that could absorb more permanent benefits if given constructive help, than the Shipping Board. Just what the fate of this Government Bureau will be is hard to determine. But given proper support our merchant marine doubtless solves all of our problems of foreign trade. Bolsa No. 3 is going at about 1800 in blue shale, showing some gas. A-4, north of Reservoir Hill, is being drilled in with rotary tools and looks as though it might be the biggest producer in the field, outside of Bolsa No. 1. Screen casting is being delivered on the rack, and this well may soon be on production. The water was shut off in this well at 2852 feet, and it is now about 3000 feet deep. If the sands continue favorable drilling may run for several days yet. A-5 and A-6 are both being drilled with cable tools, and are looking promising, at about 2600 and 2200, respectively. About 500 feet of screen casing was on the track at A-5 Thursday morning, which appears that this well may soon be among the list of producers. Union Oil Co. The W.T. Newland well continues to improve. The formation is brown shale, which has been in evidence for almost 1000 feet and appears as though the oil sands are not far away. This well is about 4140 feet. Copeland No. 1: southeast of Bolsa, is about 2250 feet. Bolsa No. 3 was spudded in Wednesday. Amalgamated Oil Co. The effort to recover lost tools in Well No. 1, north of Reservoir Hill, continues. The cement will be drilled out of No. 2, south of the hill Tuesday. No. 1, on the Fowler lease, east of Bolsa No. 1, is drilling at 2584. The depth of this well was a great surprise, as it was supposed that the sands would be found at about the same depth as in the famous gusher about 1000 feet west, which was cemented at 1920 feet. Petroleum Midway Co. Well No. 1, on Columbia Lease No. 3, east of Reservoir Hill, was cemented at 2835 feet, fairly good drilling time having been made at this well, the first one drilled in the field by this big company. Well No. 1 on the Ray Walker community, southeast of the high school, is in boulders at 360 feet. An additional boiler is being set. Well No. 1 on the Vollmer-Meyer lease was spudded in. Another boiler is also being set on this lease. The work of rigging up on Columbia Lease No. 1, at Main and Summit, is progressing very rapidly, and will be completed Monday or Tuesday. Mid-Central Oil Co. The well on the McParland lease, on the Bolsa Chica Mesa, west of Wintersburg, was cemented for the second time. Henry R. Dabney lease, on lots owned by S.A. Moore, W.D. Seely and D.O. This well is 2590 feet deep, and indications are that it will be a big producer. Texas Holding Co. Boilers have been delivered on the Obarr-Scealy-Huston lease, east of Reservoir Hill. Huntington Central Oil Co. The well on the Gothard community, Main and Wesley, was spudded in Tuesday, and 300 feet of stove pipe casing was being set Thursday morning. It was expected that the spud ceremony would be celebrated Sunday, but was delayed on account of the high wind. The Orange County Drilling Co. has charge of the work on this well. The derrick has been completed for well No. I on the Heaston lease, northeast of the oilcloth factory. The Petroleum Co. There has been some progress on the rig being erected on the C.J. Porter community, at Main and Summit, since last report, but it will be some time yet before the matter of rigging up is completed. Miley-Keck Oil Co. The work of drilling in the well across Main-street from the high school is progressing rapidly, and the indications are that this well will be on production some time next week. Bell of Montebello Oil Co. Progress at the well being drilled by this company, at Garfield and Crystal-sils, is comparatively very slow on account of the work being done with cable tools. J.T. Hurat and Associates. There has been great activity around the rig being built at the corner of Wesley and Main-street during the past week, and the way work has been going it will not be long before they are ready to go, providing supplies can be obtained as rapidly as required. Long Beach Oil & Gas Co. There has been nothing done since the completion of the derrick a month ago on the Dixon-Thorpe lease, on the Bolsa Chica mesa. The first effort made by this company was with a Star drilling outfit, and the hole was abandoned at about 400 feet. This was on the land owned by Chas. E. Dixon, of Santa Ana, but the new derrick stands on the portion of the lease owned by J.R. Thorpe of the Thorpe Engraving Co.of Los Angeles. Venture Oil Co. A string of 10½ casing was cemented in the Russell well, north of the Holly sugar factory at 3343 feet. This was primarily for the protection of the hole and not on account of the oil sands having been found, although there were some very good indications. The derrick has been completed for well No. 1 on the Clark lease, Tract 40, northeast of the Bolsa gusher. Eddystone Oil Co. Well No. 1, being drilled on Tract 75 by the Western Union Oil Co. for the Eddystone Oil Co., is drilling in blue shale at 2200 feet. West Whittier Oil Co. CONGRESS SENTIMENT IS FOR DISARMAMENT The Foreign Affairs Committee of the House unanimously adopted a joint resolution requesting the President of the United States to call a conference of the nations of the world to consider universal disarmament. If President Wilson does not take this step—and there is not much probability that he will, inasmuch as he so soon is going out of office and as he would not want to do anything to embarrass or handicap the incoming administration—Mr. Harding will probably issue a call for a conference of this nature soon after he comes into the Presidency. Sentiment in want the world to stop its mad race in building and maintaining huge armaments. This Nation is ready and eager to go as far as will other great powers in good faith, in limiting the size of armaments. A great disarmament conference of nations at Washington would be important and significant. In that it would serve to disclose definitely just how strong disarmament sentiment is throughout the world, and just how far great powers other than the U.S. are willing to go. It cannot be stressed too often or too strongly that the United States would insist upon absolute good faith upon the part of all nations before it gave its endorsement or entered into any disarmament project.
