How he quit a baseball game and rushed home with a twig of a navel orange tree, the first he had ever seen, for which he had paid $16. told by C. E. Parker, of Santa Ana.
From that twig were propagated many of the navel orange trees afterward planted in the Santa Ana valley.
C. E. Parker—best known to his friends as Ed Parker—and his brother, Clarence H. Parker, ran a nursery at the north end of North Main-st of Santa Ana for five or six years, beginning about 1875. With the oxen and the plow the ground was broken. Two or three years later this seven acres was where the Parker brothers' nursery was located.
"The first seed bed I ever saw," said C. E. Parker, "was located in the center of Orange, where the plaza now is. There was a post and a faucet there then, and everybody around got water at that faucet. There was no plaza there then, just a crossroads. Mr. Beach had set out an orange seedbed southwest of the faucet just as close as he could get to it so he would not have to carry water far.
"When we decided to go to raising some oranges, I seed While Anahale with growing walnuts; there were only a yards there, and angles for seed. I to B. D. Wilson's and bring home anges. From the squeezed out the."
