WALKER WILL MEET BUREAU DIRECTORS W. H. Walker, president of the California Federation of Farm Bureau, will meet the directors of the Orange-co Farm Bureau at a special session this Friday at the Farm Bureau headquarters at 10 a.m. His principal mission at this time is to explain the new public utilities department of the Farm Bureau. This department is the outgrowth of appeals for assistance from various counties in the federation. The past year continued requests have come for help on problems relating to telephone, light, water rate, electric power rates, and various other complaints and issues on rates and service relating to public service companies. To meet the needs the state federation has opened its utilities department with the view of giving continued service to farmers on all issues and complaints coming under the jurisdiction of the state railroad commission. In the matter of electric rates and other public utilities issues, individuals and single counties are unable to make proper appearance and present necessary agricultural data before the commission. The public utilities department of the State Farm Bureau will, however, arrange and analyze all data relating to inventories, operation expenses, profits as applied to dividends or new improvements, and the cost of construction based on normal periods rather than on war-time prices, and undertake to properly represent the counties in presenting and attending to the issues and complaints. Agriculture is fundamentally concerned in these rates and services since agriculture carries a great part in the paying-of-electric charges. Our concern is sufficiently fundamental to demand full investigation of all inventories on which these rates are based. The time has passed for presenting cases before the commission based on words and sentiment. Our stands the selection of men for various types of work will have charge of the department, according to the recommendations of the committee. Many of the large farmers have been interviewed by Farm Advisor Wahiberg to ascertain their patronage in the event that a labor department were established. Practically every one emphasized the need of a local labor office that would select men judiciously and give free service to both employees and employer. The grain men and beet growers have especially solicited for this new department and have urged the Farm Bureau's co-operation. FARMERS IN CITIES JOIN FARM BUREAU Farmers who reside within city limits are just as much entitled to membership in the Farm Bureau as those living on the farm. A letter has been sent to every farmer in the county, including those residing in the city, explaining the function of the Farm Bureau and soliciting their membership. As no committees have been provided to work within the city boundaries of any town in Orange-co, every farmer who believes in the effectiveness of organization and co-operation is asked to volunteer his efforts to the extent at least of sending his membership dues of $5 for the year to the Farm Bureau office at Santa Ana. A personal check made out to the Orange-co Farm Bureau will enlist any farmer on the Farm Bureau Center schedule. Just now the Farm Bureau is creating a public utilities department which needs th backing of every power user and farmer in the county to affiliate with the State Farm Bureau department. City farmers Dont fall to enlist. FIRST STATE EGG CONTEST CLOSED The California egg-laying contest at Santa Cruz ended its first year Monday evening, Nov. 15th. James Smiley, Murray Horne and H. E. Wahlberg have been appointed to confer with the county authorities and state labor commissioner to obtain aid in financing the department so as to make it a free service bureau to the employed and employer. The Farm Bureau will set aside a portion of its funds for this purpose. The state labor commission will be approached for some assistance and the county supervisors. The Farm Center of that community has invited the Farm Bureau members of the county, citrus growers, bean growers, walnut growers and other producers to get together and present their views to their representative at Washington. Committees and delegations will be sent from Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Costa Mesa, Capistrano, El Medina, Fullerton, Garden Grove, La Habra, Tustin, Villa Park, West Orange, Yorba Linda, and Wintersburg to present the attitude of their respective communities on the several questions pertaining to agriculture to come before congress. The directors of each Farm Center, unless otherwise arranged, will act as spokesman for his delegation. The school auditorium will accommodate 550 people, and every seat should be filled on this occasion. Mr. C. L. Crumrine and W. L. York, who are acting on the reception committee for the La Habra Farm Center, urge all to come early to insure getting seats. JOIN THE FARM BUREAU Judge a farm advisor by results, not by what you happen to think of him. A farm advisor is not a scientific farmer, a practical farmer, a horse, cow and pig doctor, a bugologist, a business agent, a stenographer, office boy, expert financier and weather and market prophet all combined in one man, but he is just an ordinary human being who wants to help you improve your business methods. If you believe in the farm advisor use him. If the farm advisor starts a good thing, back him up. If the farm advisor does not come to see you—don't cuss, but go to see him. The farm advisor can help every farmer in the county if he has a strong County Farm Bureau to back up his work. Join your County Farm Bureau. HOLSTEIN PRODUCES 109 LBS. IN MONTH Since the beginning of the Farm Bureau Cowteater's work of determining the butter fat production of the individual cow by the Babcock method, very great interest has been shown among the various milk producers in Orange-co. Joe Soores, of Greenville, an owner of a grade herd, has a large Holstein that produced 2434 pounds of milk and 109.55 pounds butterfat in the month of January. This is 15 pounds of butterfat ahead of any cow that has ever been tested in the county. Soores' herd of 32 cows is averaging 40.5 pounds. This dairyman attributes his success to good breeding, selection and use of a well-balanced palatable ration, and last, but very important, his personal attention to the herd.
