Auto Repairing of All Kinds Our Work Guaranteed Fullerton Rich City of the Citrus Belt Gateway to the Big Oil Field It is claimed that Fullerton is the "richest little city in the richest county of the state." But Fullerton is more than a little city—one would hardly call a city of 6000 a little city, though. While only a population of 6000, Fullerton has an assessed valuation of more than twenty-two million dollars. Fullerton is three miles from Anaheim; eleven miles from Santa Ana, the county seat; twenty-three miles from Los Angeles, fifteen miles from the Pacific Ocean; the foothills of the mountains are only a few miles to the northeast—and all are reached by motor stages over ideal boulevards, or by the Pacific Electric railway. Fullerton is also on the Santa Fe railway. The main industry of the town is the raising of oranges and lemons; walnuts follow a second; then follow the various kinds of vegetables. Seven hundred and sixty car loads of oranges—325,000 boxes of citrus fruit—were packed out of Fullerton last year, and the industry is growing all the time. Many new citrus fruit orchards are just beginning to come into bearing; more acreage of walnuts are coming in, but not to such an extent as the oranges and the lemons. One hundred cars of English walnuts were shipped last year. Big Oil Industry While soil crops — oranges and lemons, walnuts Big Oil Industry While soil crops — oranges and lemons, walnuts and vegetables, barley, etc., are big assets, what has done more to accelerate the activity around Fullerton the past few months has been the development of the oil fields. Fullerton is the gateway to the Southern California oil fields. The daily production of the field in this section is 200,000 barrels. New wells are being opened every day. The gas supply is ample, supplying all important centers in this section. The oil men receive a minimum of five dollars per day; many receive as much as eight dollars per day. The past two years Fullerton has taken on great activity due to the development of the oil fields. More than 300 new homes have been built in the city during that time. All home owners have a civic pride that is commendable. Ninety per cent of the residents in the city are home owners. Owing to the fact that Fullerton is the gate-city to the biggest oil fields on the coast, many operators, laborers and investors choose Fullerton as their residential city. The city has six churches, many clubs and lodges, a board of trade, that is up to the second in all matters civic; the second largest Sunday school in the state, having a membership of more than 300 each Sabbath; Fullerton has a high school of sixteen separate buildings, second to none of its character in the United States; also a Junior College and a large grammar school. When the whole system of buildings is completed Fullerton will have invested in school buildings and facilities something close to a million dollars. Fullerton has 18 miles of paved streets and the city is connected in every direction with ideal paved boulevards. It is the center, one might say, of the paved boulevards of Southern California. Twenty-five hundred miles of paved highways. Fullerton has a general hospital, a Carnegie library, four banks and other institutions that are a credit to a city much larger than Fullerton, less than 34 years of age—a town that less than 34 years ago was nothing but a mustard patch. The city tax rate is only 90 cents per $100 and the tax rate for all purposes is only $2.62—a figure that should appeal to everyone. The first train to reach the town of Fullerton was in the fall of '88 and then the town began to grow. Fullerton was named in honor of G. H. Fuller, who at that time was president of the Pacific Land and Improvement Company. The railroad endeavored to have the town called La Habra, in fact the first tickets bore that name, but the name of Fullerton stuck. Fullerton never had what is called a "boom;" true the town has bad its ups and downs; its days of an indigo day color, but ever onward and upward, growing all of the time, and the past two years has seen more activity than at any other time. The people of Fullerton and the Fullerton district are happy and contented people. They enjoy prosperity because there is a diversity of crops; a diversity of payrolls; all of the town's eggs are not in one basket. Big packing houses—walnuts, oranges, lemons, vegetables—help to make big payrolls for the city. Many of the oil boys live in Fullerton and spend much of their wealth in Fullerton. And Fullerton gets a big amount of the tourist travel thru Southern California. With soil and oil resources back of the town; its passenger and transportation facilities; its highways; tourists, scenic and climatic conditions—it is no small wonder that Fullerton takes today.
