Friday, January 14, 1921 ENJOYABLE MEETING OF WOMAN'S CLUB BUENA PARK, Jan. 14—Special—The Woman's club held a very enjoyable meeting at the home of Mrs. A. E. Smothers on Thursday afternoon, with fourteen members and two visitors present. Mrs. Ben Calloway and Bessica F. Raiche, M. D. During the afternoon Mrs. Ben Calloway read a very interesting article, "New Voters' Day" on American naturalization. Mr. Terry, a missionary from Huntington Beach will be invited to meet with us and arrange for a community meeting for the local Mexicans. Any one having old magazines are urged to leave them with Mrs. W. B. Shaw as soon as possible for the soldiers and callors in the hospital at Balbon Park. After the business meeting the hostess served delicious refreshments of ice cream, cake, microoons and cocoa. The club will meet in two weeks at the home of the president, Mrs. James Macklin. Mrs. W. T. Calloway and Mrs. E. E. Thurman were guests of Mrs. E. L. Cole on Wednesday, where they enjoyed a fine four course dinner. The Ladies' Aid of the Congregational church will be held Thursday at the home of Mrs. Chas. L. Knight. Refreshments will be served. All members are urged to attend. The teachers and officers of the Congregational Sunday school were entertained Wednesday evening at the home of the superintendent, Mr. Fred Bastady. Mr. Bastady and Mr. Harvey Hartman favored the guests with several selections. Refreshments wereserved and all had a very enjoyable evening. Miss Irma Robinson has recovered after a recent attack of tonsillitis. Mr. Frank Jones has his new residence completed but has not been able to get the gas. Capt. Hagen, of Los Angeles, was in town Thursday. Richey presided in the absence of H. A. Lake, the president. This was a strictly business session and the regular routine of business was carried on. There was a fair attendance. Chapman, formerly of Fonda, Iowa, passed away last Thursday at the age of 74 years. Mrs. Chapman came to Garden Grove in May to spend her last days with Mrs. M. J. Brown, who cared for her until her death. Mrs. Brown accompanied the remains to Fonda, Iowa, where interment will be made. Mr. S. S. Jackson has suffered a relapse since his recent illness and is unable to be out of the house this week. FOR SALE—Walnut Wood $9.50 per 40 EMPLOYED NOW AT NEWPORT CANNERY The first new industry attracted to Orange-co's harbor by the port improvements is now operating with a payroll averaging $5000 per month. This industry is that of the Newport Packing Co., operated in the corrugated iron building on the city channel at Newport, and erected several months ago by Mrs. M. F. Lowman of Santa Ana. At present about 40 persons are employed including two dozen women and girls. Yesterday afternoon the cannery was working on 22 tons of sardines brot in by the 60-foot purse-seiner, "Good Pardner," and a dozen tons more taken on the beach at Newport by seines, and handed to the cannery in wagons.
