Society: Clubs : Lodges : Churches ENTERTAIN SO. DAK. CLUB. At their unique little bungalow on No. West-st, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Prescott most hospitably entertained the members of the South Dakota club, last Wednesday evening. Four tables of whist were played. The tables and rooms were beautifully decorated in the spirit of the times, with glittering tinsel and large wreaths of holly. On referring to past records of the club it was found that Mr. R. R. Pember had won the highest number of games with a score of 30 counts and following a close second with Ms. C. E. McCulloch with a score of 25 counts. Amid tears and deep regrets the club was forced to present Mr. E. J. Pember with the consolation. But cheer up, Ed. Mr. Harding is elected now, and we are held out the promise of bright things in the future. A dainty two-course lunch was served at midnight. The guests departing pronounced Mr. and Mrs. Prescott royal entertainers. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Pember, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Aread Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Pember, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. He repaireth himself early to the house of his enemy. He girdeth up his loins, he buckleth on the whole armor of luck, he fighteth a fit fight. If he looseth loud are his lamentations, he complaineth much of the actions of others. When he wineth, his exclamations of mirth resound throutthe whole tabernacle, he maketh a great noise. He partaketh of the good things to eat, and when we addeth the scores at the termination of the evening, Lo! the truth is not in him. The "indeterminate sentence" in criminal courts here in California is being criticized quite sharply and quite generally. It is said in its disfavor that it encourages ratlter than discourages, crime. There is this feature about the indeterminate sentence that is objectionable—it gives the desperate criminal a gambler's chance to hope for lightening of his punishment. This no doubt is the day many a hardened criminal reasons with himself: "I will go ahead and commit this crime. If I am caught in it, tried and convicted, I probably will be given an indeterminate sentence. Hence I will have a chance, after serving a few years, to get a pardon or a parole. It looks so dead easy to me that I am willing to go on with my criminality and take a chance of escaping a long prison term."
