DAIRYMEN SHOULD BALANCE RATIONS The feeding of excess protein to dairy cows for long continued periods might be injurious to the health of the cows. It might also affect the growth and development of the offspring. Physiological derangements might be induced in both cows and offspring. This method of feeding might also affect the composition and milk yields of the cows and also of the offspring. If they remained on the same rations as were given their dams. Metabolic variations in the digestibility and general utilization of the nutrients of the rations would probably occur. On the other hand, very many farmers expect cows to produce milk and thrive on rations which do not contain sufficient protein, hence the cows have to eat large amounts of the feed to secure enough protein for their requirements. The results of such feeding form an interesting study, especially when compared with the results secured with the excess protein ration. Four cows were selected for this experiment and divided into two groups. They were all purebred Holstein, closely related and the group was balanced as closely as possible with respect to all visible and measurable characteristics. One group received a ration consisting of 9 lbs. of corn meal, 2 lbs. of bran and 40 lbs. of silage. This ration is designated as the high energy ration, and has a nutritive ration of 1:11.0. The other group received what is designated as the high protein ration, tonseed meal, 2 lbs. of bran, 7 lbs., which consisted of 2 pounds of cotof corn gluten meal and 40 lbs. of silage. This has a nutritive value ratio of 1:2.4. Both rations supply the full necessary amounts of nutrients for maintenance and milk production, but the first contains an excess of energy and the second an excess of protein. The cow fed the high energy ration consumed almost all of her food and in so doing obtained a large surplus of energy. Her ability to digest the nutrients decreased until the energy dropped to the requirements of her body for maintenance and milk production. The gestibility stock of the protein hence the cowtain her flesh weight rapidly gestibility affer than any other client. MAKING PROGRESS Farm Advisor Wahlberg reports that the organization committee of the California Beet Growers Assn. has made good progress in getting signatures for the new growers association. Committees are being appointed this week to handle certain districts in the county. A meeting has been called for tonight (Wednesday) at Wintersburg hall to acquaint the growers of Talbert, Westminster, Sueltzer and Wintersburg with the purpose of the organization. The growers of Monterey county are contemplating an organization similar to the one started here and are awaiting further developments before starting a strong campaign for membership. James P. Britt, deputy state market director, met with the organization committee last week and upon hearing the progress made, said that in his experience with cooperative organizations of this kind, no group had made better progress than the beet growers in this present organization in the time that has elapsed so far. Wahlberg asserts that this local organization is only a nucleus to a state department of sugar beet growers which will take up some of the larger problems that confront the industry. BUREAU CAMPAIGN WILL BEGIN JAN. 12 "The committees appointed to solicit members for the Farm Bureau are preparing to start out Wednesday, Jan. 12, and visit as many of the farmers as possible," said H. B. Woodrough, who has charge of the membership campaign. "The men and women composing these committees believe so firmly in the Farm Bureau that they willingly give of their time and energy to bring others into the organization and, so that their time may be used to the best possible advantage. I earnestly request that every farmer in the county have his $5 check ready not later than the 12th; then in case he should be away when the committee calls or should be missed the check can be mailed to the county Farm Bureau office, Santa Ana. "No people in the world," said Woodrough, "have had better opportunity to observe the benefits derived from organization than our Orange-co farmers, and from the comments coming into our office we know they are going to come strong in their support of the Farm Bureau—the organization with a vision." I also feel very sure that each present individual Farm Bureau member is going to make himself or herself." LYON REALTY COMPANY Real Values In Real Estate 148 W. Center St. Phone 46 BUREAU LEADERS CALL ON STEPHENS The Farm Bureau has taken an active interest in the appointment of the railroad commission from the farmer's standpoint. A delegation of San Joaquin Valley farmers, headed by H. J. Evans, president of the Tulare-co Farm Bureau, and J. J. Deuel, president of the Kern-co Farm Bureau, called at the state house, Dec. 27 to see the governor in regard to the commission. They told the governor frankly that if Mr. Edgerton was reappointed and that the policy pursued by him and Mr. Devlin during the past year was continued that it would cause financial ruin for many farmers in the valley. The governor showed great interest in the farmers' cause and asked many questions of those present. At the close of the conference the governor indicated that he was fully aware of the farmers' troubles and said that he wished they would trust him to give relief at the earliest possible moment.
