News of Oil Fields
(Huntington Beach Field)
The casing at Surf No. 1, Surf Land and Water Co. lease, was being tested Thursday morning, and if the water shutoff proves successful, the well will be drilled in with the rotary.
The deep well of the field, No. 1, Torrance lease, near the Bolsa Chica Gun club house, is going slowly; in fact, the digging was so hard Thursday morning that some of the boys that they were drilling on iron, and if it continues Sharp & Hughes bits may be used.
This well is about 3900 feet deep, and so far, there have been but few indications of oil sands.
Some material has been delivered on the ground for No. 1 on a 20-acre community lease, about 1500 feet southeast of Bolsa No. 1.
No. 1, north of Reservoir Hill, is drilling in hard sand between 2300 and 2400 feet, and hope to find some place to land a string of 10-inch casing soon.
No. 2, south of the hill, is now between 500 and 600 feet, of about twice as deep as when the blowout occurred last week. The company may decide to set a short string of 15-inch casing and run cement in around it to preserve the hole in case another gas blow should happen.
No. 1, Fowler community lease, is rigging up, and will spud in some time next week. This well will be drilled by W. W. Keck, who has the DR. H. L. WILKINS Veterinary Surgeon and Dentist

contract for the work.
No. 1, W. T. Newland lease, is coming in for attention again, as the cement has been drilled out and work is again progressing with rotary tools, four-inch pipe being used. Up to Thursday morning there appeared to be but little change in the formation. The water shutoff was successful.
No. 1, Dilingno community, about 1000 feet southeast of Bolsa No. 1, is rigging up and it will be several days yet before it is completed.
The rig for No. 1, Ashton community, Farm Lot 75, is being completed in whirlwind fashion, and this well will be spudded in some time next week.
Venture Oil Co. well is 1335 feet deep and the drill in a hard blue shale, with some oil colors and a good showing of gas.
This well was spudded in two weeks ago and the Orange-co Drilling Co. is making record-breaking time. If the oil sands are not much deeper than in the Standard wells this hole will be ready for the casing next week.
Well No. 1, Kirk lease, south of the Holly sugar factory, was spudded in Tuesday morning, and about 500 feet of hole has been made. This is one of the fine rigs of the field, and the Republic is rapidly becoming one of the substantial companies of California.
No. 1, Hottel community, east of Reservoir Hill, is 1220 feet and drilling in hard, sandy shale. Splendid progress is being made at this well, an average of more than 100 feet of hole per day having been made the past week.
No. 1 Myer community, about 1000 feet northwest of Standard 3-A, is rigging up and setting boilers, but will not be ready to turn on steam for some time yet.
There has been some delay in cementing at this well, owing to the fact electric power was used, and it is necessary to set one boiler before the cement can be run in the hole. This work will be completed some time next week.
No. 1, McFarlane lease, Bolsa Chica mesa, is 3150 feet deep and the 6-inch drill pipe is being broken down, to be replaced with four-inch contract for the work.
Wesley, and that is expected to follow.
The derrick in No. 1, Garfield-st additie east of Reservoir formerly owned is now the property W. D. Seely, D. A. Baxter.

Wesley, and the work of rigging up is expected to follow.
The derrick is almost completed at No. 1, Clark lease, southwest of the Holly sugar factory, and boilers are being set and other work done, and the gong will probably sound in about two weeks.
The derrick has been completed for well No. 1, on lot 25, block C. Garfield-st addition, Crystal-st, north east of Reservoir Hill. This tract was formerly owned by R. H. Arnett and is now the property of R. L. Obarr, W. D. Seely, D. W. Huston and John A. Baxter.
Some material has been delivered for a derrick across Crystal-st from the Texas Holding Co. well. Excursions are being run and stock being sold. Tents have been pitched and refreshments were served visitors Sunday.
The Union Oil Co., of California is seeking a right-of-way for a pipe line from the P. E. Railway Co. tracks at Ocean-ave and the road near the western edge of the mesa, evidently intending to construct racks for loading tank cars at this point.
The biggest transaction in the way of leases was closed when the General Petroleum Co. deposited $30,-600 in the First National bank of Huntington Beach in payment of cash bonuses on 255 lots in the Vista Del Mar section, comprising 30 acres. The bonus paid is $125 per lot. Six hundred dollars was allowed for the expense of obtaining the signatures.
This is the first close-in lease taken in this field by this company, so far as known, but has held some farther out, including the Bushard Bros., and L. T. Wells farms and other tracts, for several months.
The Republic Petroleum Corp., recently purchased the lease on the 28-acre ranch home of D. O. Stewart, from F. V. Gordon, of Los Angeles for $24,000 and soon afterwards is reported to have been offered $48,-000 for it by the General Petroleum Co.
The Petroleum Midway Co. has also taken over a lease on 172 lots, 21½ acres, in the East Side district, and deposited a check for $5000 in the First National bank of Napa Valley.

S.A. JUDGES TALK OF COURT DIGNITY
Should superior courts of California establish the custom of opening court with the audience standing upon the entrance of the judge?
Is the cry of the bailiff calling "Hear ye, hear ye, the superior court in and for the county of Orange is now in session," advisable?
These questions are in the minds of a number of courthouse officials by reason of the fact that the Los Angeles superior courts have adopted a custom by which all of those present in a superior courtroom will rise when the judge enters and remain standing until the judge takes his seat and says, "Please be seated."
That formality such as this has a tendency to impress people with the dignity and seriousness of the court's business is declared by the two superior judges of Orange-co, Z. B. West and R. Y. Williams.
The question as to whether or not the custom should be instituted in Orange-co has not been discussed by the two Orange-co judges.
"I believe it is well worth doing and well worth considering," said Judge West today. "We have always had the formal opening of the court by the bailiff. The opening of court is not required by law, but is a matter of custom in the individual court.

tendency to impress people with the dignity and seriousness of the court's business is declared by the two superior judges of Orange-co, Z. B. West and R. Y.
There may be some superior courts in this state in which the custom is established. It is not a general practice, however.
"I believe there is something worth while in the observance of these outward forms of dignity. In the upper court of the state it has always been the custom for those in the courtroom to rise when the judge enters the courtroom to go upon the bench."
Judge Williams said that he believed the manner of doing business in Los Angeles makes the plan of carrying on a formal opening feasible. Whether or not it could be worked out here in a practical way to add dignity to court procedure, he doubts.
"In Los Angeles," said Judge Willitms, "the courts are divided into departments. One judge tries divorce cases only, another juvenile cases only. The judge goes upon the bench promptly at 10 o'clock.
"Here Judge West and I are on duty practically all of the time. Court sometimes starts at 9 o'clock, sometimes at 9:30 o'clock, according to the need. We try all kinds of cases, and we go on the bench to meet the convenience of attorneys and litigants. There is no formal opening hour here as there is in Los Angeles.
"I believe that in a big city where there is a great mass of ignorant people the outward forms of dignity are more necessary to impress people with the seriousness of court procedure than they are in a county such as ours. I have never noticed in court any disorder or lack of appreciation of the authority of the courts here."
Judge West suggested that the formal opening such as is being adopted in Los Angeles might be used here only when court opens at the regular court hour, 10 o'clock.
The formality of having court opened by a bailiff has been observed in Orange-co only when a bailiff was present. The bailiff is practically always on hand.
A few years ago the dignity of Judge Thomas' courtroom was upset one morning. The court had a case set for 10 o'clock. Along came attorneys and litigants in another case, and Judge Thomas without a bailiff went on the bench at 9 o'clock and heard the case. The case came to an end just about 10 o'clock. In came the bailiff. Thinking court was just ready to open, he gave his lusty call of "Hear ye! hear ye! the superior court in and for the county of Orange is now in session."
"Yes, this court is in session," said Judge Thomas dryly, "and it has been in session for an hour."
