ENGLISH NOVELISTS' INCOMES NOT LARGE
LONDON, Dec. 29.—Novels are to be dearer in Great Britain, but the public who pay the higher price must not think that the novelist will be the better off.
True, the royalty the author receives is reckoned on the published price. The 10, 12½, 15, 20—what ever it may be—pct. that he used to get on $1.50 he will now get on $2.25. All the same he views the rise in price with some alarm. He fears that by just as much as the price rises so the actual number of copies sold will fall off.
"Tales are told of the big earnings of novelists," said one writer a few days ago. "These tales are perfectly true in that some novelists do earn big money. But it is safe to say that the majority do not get a living wage for their work. And those who do grow rich often do so less by the sale of their books than by the sale of serial, dramatic, film and foreign rights.
"It is difficult, perhaps, to persuade the public that most of us practically give away our work so far as our getting anything out of it goes. We live in neat homes like other citizens, pay income tax and look moderately prosperous. But, probably nine out of every 10 of us earn our living at some other profession. We are journalists, doctors, clergymen, lawyers, merchants."

schoolmasters, engineers, actors, all sorts and kinds of busy men, and we write our novels overtime.
"Here is my own tale of six books. Those six books have brot me in royalties $300 and in serial rights $200—$500 in all, or less than $85 a book. And into each book I probably put 1000 hours' work—and those hours were overtime.
"I have had then, $500 for 6000 hours' work, which figures out to a little less than 8½ cents an hour."
Placentia News
PLACENTIA, Jan. 3.—Friday evening at the Presbyterian church a good time was enjoyed by a large number who watched the old year out. The games were in charge of William Key; music, Miss nowerton; devotion. Mr. Gage; refreshments, Mrs. Lucy. Mr. J. L. Blake told of his experience in conducting a party of 36 selected Boy Scouts over the battle torn fields of Europe.
Mrs. C. A. Christensen came out from Los Angeles Tuesday evening to spend a day or two with her mother-in-law, Mrs. O. C. Christensen.
Mrs. C. E. Hoffman was run into by a boy riding a bicycle full tilt on the sidewalk, receiving many severe bruises, and these, together with the nervous shock, have kept her confined to her bed and under a doctor's care ever since. Mr. Hoffman at once referred the matter to the county officers, not for the purpose of having the boy punished, but in the hope that the possibility of other similar accidents might be avoided. While the boy, 14 years of age, was grossly careless, he was only indulging in a pastime that has always gone unrestrained in Placentia. The district attorney, after promising to have notices posted calling attention to the county ordinance prohibiting the riding of bicycles or coasters on sidewalks, referred the matter to the juvenile officer, who visited Placentia with one of his deputies, and who now has the matter under consideration.
Edwin Johnson returned last week from Fresno-co, where he had a position during the summer with the raisin association. He is now located at Huntington Park, but was greeting Placentia.

At better than 1,900 feet, Venture's well No. 1 gives promise of highly profitable production. Formations encountered are IDENTICAL with those cut by the Standard's immense wells. Our drill TO-DAY is grinding through the same "hardpan" that was found in every producing well in the Huntington Beach field. Slower drilling, of course — but MORE than encouraging, due to the fact that such formation checks exactly with the giant Bolsa Chica and other Huntington Beach producers.

Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Bradford entertained a merry party of friends and relatives at a Christmas dinner. It goes without saying that their guests enjoyed a very pleasant day and a splendid dinner. The party included Mrs. M. L. Wade, Miss L. Wade, Mrs. F. Hickock, Mrs. Girvin and daughter and Mrs. Mardis, of Los Angeles; Mrs. Sula D. Abbott and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Bradford and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Bradford and Eugene Fennelon, of Placentia.
Elfie Fay, the comedienne who sang "The Belle of Avenue A" and made it famous from Hoboken to San Jose, back in the days when her pictures used to come packed in cigarettes, was married here the other day to Samuel Armstrong Benner, a Pittsburgher. Strange as it may seem, Miss Fay gave her age as only 35.

COUNTY WILL PAVE 20 MI. NEXT YEAR
Orange-co, famed for its good roads, will have 15 or 20 miles of new pavement laid during 1921, an investigation today indicated. The mileage may be increased to 25.
In Santa Ana a number of streets are to be paved within the next six months. Once the campaign now well under way gets into its stride, the number of streets to be paved will unquestionably increase.
In addition to the pavement of a number of roads that have not been paved, the county will place a heavy wearing surface upon a number of miles of paved road. Bids are to be opened Dec. 28 by supervisors for eight miles of asphalt top. This top will strengthen the base and protect it. The top is to be placed upon pavement that shows the effect of hard usage. A contract has just been let for placing five inches of concrete on top of two miles of the Huntington Beach-blvd.
Work was begun today by the contractor who is to lay five miles of paving in the road improvement district at Villa Park. Parts of Tustin-ave, Villa Park-rd, Lincoln-st and Center-dr are included in the contract. A part of the cost of the paving is to be paid for out of the road funds within the control of Supervisor N. T. Edwards of Orange.
A new road improvement district is being formed in the Golden State section cast of Anaheim. Plans are on foot for the paving of three miles of road in that district.
The supervisors plan to complete the paving of the road to the Orangeco park late in the spring. Work on this job will not start until after the heavy rains are over.
A mile of paving at the Ed Modena end of the road has been completed. There remains about two and a half miles to be finished to the park.
Plans are being made for the construction of a mile and a half of road from the Huntington Beach-blvd to the Holly sugar plant at Huntington Beach.

READY WITH NEW COMMUNITY LAW
"The new community property bill to be presented to the legislature in January gives the wife the equality sought by the Women's Legislative Council of California, and at the same time protects business. It provides the one main feature of equity between man and wife in community property, and at the same time does not contain the features to which the objection was raised in the campaign that resplited in the defeat in a referendum vote of the community property law passed by the last legislature."
This statement was made today by Mrs. A. J. Lawton of Santa Ana, chairman of the Women's Legislative Council. Mrs. Lawton will leave Santa Ana Saturday for Sacramento, where she will remain throughout January as chairman of the women's council in charge of the measures sponsored by the council.
The council is backing three measures. First, is the new community property bill. Second, is a bill to raise the age for giving state aid to orphans from 15 years to 16 years, making the age to conform to the age set in the compulsory school attendance law. Third, is a bill to protect boys under 18 years of age from vice.
The bill to be presented to the legislature was drawn by a committee of three well known attorneys.

"While in the vast majority of cases, even tho she had the power, the wife would not attempt to dispose of any of the property to the disadvantage of the husband any more than the husband now attempts to dispose of it to the disadvantage of the wife, yet there are undoubtedly cases where the wife has the moral right and should have the power, to pass a portion of the property which she has assisted in accumulating to her children (especially those of a prior marriage for whom her husband may have no feeling or attachment) or to other dependent relatives.

Third, is a bill to protect boys under 18 years of age from vice.
The bill to be presented to the legislature was drawn by a committee of three well known attorneys acting as a committee of the State Bar Assn. These attorneys openly declared that there is need in California for a law granting to the wife testamentary power over community property.
The report of the committee of three attorneys of the State Bar Association contained the following:
"We must recognize the fact that there is a strong demand that married women be given the right to direct what, when they die, shall become of a portion of the property which they, in the theory of the law, have aided in accumulating. This theory has substantial foundation. Even where the wife does not do the cooking, washing and housework, her time may be largely taken up with the care of the children, sewing, and supervising the running of the household."
"The accumulation of a surplus is often due to the fact that the wife does certain work herself, instead of employing servants, forgoes expensive amusements and vacations, dresses inexpensively, and so forth. The family income in such cases
PRIZE INDIAN MOTOR ON EXHIBITION HERE
An exhibition model of the new 1921 Scout Indian motorcycle was placed on display today in the show window of L. Wisser's Sporting Goos store by Carriker and Cowl, dealers for the Indian in Northern Orange county. The machine will be on exhibition for one week.
For beauty and engineering skill this motor is nothing short of marvelous, according to men familiar in this line. The machine is finished in spotless white, including the saddle and grips, with a neat hairline gold stripe that blends to perfection with the rich white enameling. The rims, spokes, handle bars and working parts are heavily nickeled plated. All equipment even to the tires are richly enameled in white.
This is the same motorcycle that caused a mild stir in motorcycle circles in Chicago during the recent National Motor show there. By special arrangement with the Edwards and Christ company, Chicago agents for the Indian, Carriker and Crowl were able to secure this wonderful specimen of Indian workmanship for its first showing on the coast. Through their uniting efforts local motorcyclists will have the opportunity to view this wonderful creation even before its display in larger cities on the coast.
The machine will be on display in Wisser's windows this evening for the first time.

MOVIE FILM SHOWS GASOLINE DISCOVERY
Few people who blithely drive their motor cars have the slightest idea of the many wonderful occurrences that took place and led up to this marvel of modern transportation. And there are, probably, not more than one or two of them who give a thought of which gasoline was discovered as liquid fuel. And yet, without this discovery, the present day automobile would have been an impossibility.
Now, thrue motion pictures, being made for the Cole Motor Car Co., of Indianapolis, the general public is to see as exact a copy of the room in which ganoline was discovered as modern-day science and the ingenuity of the films can make it. It has been made a part of a motion picture called "The Porcelain Lamp," an educational feature which is to show the entire evolution of travel from primitive days to the present. The picture takes its name and center around no less an incident than the actual discovery of gasoline as a liquid fuel, as it was made many years ago in the hut of a French inventor, by the explosion of an old porcelain lamp.
