SANTA ANA MEN TO
PUT DOWN OIL WELL
A $100,000 company has been organized in Santa Ana for the purpose of drilling for oil in the territory that has been made live oil territory by the bringing in of the 4000-barrel a day well on the C. C. Chapman property east of Placentia.
The well is to be drilled a quarter of a mile north of the Yorba school house. The property lies between the Kraemer well at Yorba and the big Chapman well. It is one of three pieces totaling 260 acres upon which R. Y. Williams and E. E. Farnsworth got oil leases over a year ago.
There are 25 or 30 Santa Ana and Orange men interested in the company, articles of incorporation which are being prepared. Stood the company has not been put out the market.
F. E. Farnsworth, R. Y. Willis, C. S. Crookshank, N. T. Edwards, R. M. Simon have been elected directors. C. S. Crookshank is the company's manager.
It is proposed to erect a deep and start drilling at the earliestsible moment.
BACK FROM FRANCE
Clifford E. Best, of the 33rd C Artillery, has just returned France and is now at Camp Keen waiting to be discharged. He is son of Mrs. Emma Shafer of Placentia.

EXPECT ASSEMBLY
WILL PUT UP BIG
ROAD BOND ISSUE
SACRAMENTO, Mar. 24.—Special
There is a tentative understanding to adjourn about the 15th of next month, and a resolution will be introduced to that effect. If this is done, a great many bills will die in committee.
Generally it is only the new members that express confidence in a reasonably early adjournment. The veterans smile and say nothing. They are fully aware that only smaller bills of minor importance over which there is no contest are being cleared from the deck.
Favorable for Road Bonds
The proposition to bond the state for $39,500,000 for state highway construction will probably be recommended out favorably by the Roads and Highways Committee. Of this amount; $20,000,000 is to be expended in completing highways already laid out by the commission and $19,500,000 will be expended in new construction.
All the assembly bills for the record of leased contract sales the same as chattel mortgages have been killed in committee.
Compensation Bills
The Workmens' Compensation bills, which include every employer, exempting none, requires an employer to pay $55.00 into the rehabilitation fund of the commission when an employee, without dependants, is fatally injured, if not insured; later, if a wife or dependent holds up $55.00.
NET ONE, WATCH OUT!
The naval authorities at San Diego have definitely refused to turn Lieutenant H. B. Gordon over to the civil authorities without an order from the Secretary of the Navy. Lieutenant Gordon on March 1 was sentenced to ten days in the county jail for speeding fifty-six miles an hour. In order to gain time, Gordon took an appeal, and was allowed to go on his own recognizance. The next naval or army officer who gets up against one of Justice Cox's ten-day sentences will probably have to put up cash ball.

Compensation Bills
The Workmens' Compensation bills, which include every employer, exempting none, requires an employer to pay $55.00 into the rehabilitation fund of the commission when an employee, without dependants, is fatally injured, if not insured; later, if a wife or dependant bobs up $2500 must be paid. When a group of laborers contract to do a piece of work, harvesting or anything else, if not insured, the employer is liable for any accidents or injuries they may sustain. The waiting period is also reduced to seven days.
The bill limiting a hired girl's hours of work to 10 per day was passed out of committee with the recommendation that it be adopted. When it came up for passage the proponents had it referred back to the committee for amendment.
The bill prohibiting the use of machines for spraying paint and other materials, which would seriously affect every orchardist, has been killed by the health committee.
Changes in Election Laws
There are a number of bills amending the primary election law, now before the committee on election. These cover almost every phase of the primary law from using an indelible pencil instead of a rubber stamp in marking ballots to a bill permitting old time party conventions and a place on the ballot for their nominees.
There are numerous irrigation, drainage, swamp and reclamation bills which are destined to cause some determined contest, especially that limiting the voting strength of any person in forming an irrigation district to 640 acres and 10 per cent of the aggregate value of the lands in the proposed district.
Another bill would prevent waste and seepage, which may require the cementing of main canals.
Drastic Motor Bills
There are a number of drastic motor vehicle bills among which is one compelling every applicant for a license to file with the department an indemnity bond, or insurance policy for $5,000 at the time he makes his application.
