Camp of the county road has received the following interesting letter from his nephew, Pvt. V. Coombs, Co. F., 117 Reg. Engineers, A. P. O., A. E. F. He is a Los Angeles boy, graduate of the Los Angeles Polytechnic. He enlisted in May, 1917, and has been overseas since the fall of 1917: Mayschoss, Germany, January 29, 1919 Dear Uncle Edgar: I received your letter of the 2nd two days ago and was glad to hear you are both O. K. I have been here since the middle of December except for last week when I was stationed down the valley about six kilometers on railroad guard. Did four hours on and 12 hours off and my post was a bridge. Will enclose a postal card showing the bridge and another showing the town here. We are in the Ohr valley about 22 kilometers from the Rhine. About half way down are two fair-sized towns, Ahweller and Neu-enahr. The latter is a health resort having hot mineral baths. I had one the other day and it sure was fine. There are a pile of candy and post card stores there and two or three places handle ice cream, the first I have eaten in Europe. It was really sherbet tho. I was really able to buy oranges at a mark and a half apiece. We were paid this month in marks, at the rate of 149 for a hundred francs. Francs are 5.45 on a dollar.
