TELLS OF SINKING
BUENA PARK, Feb. 14 (Special)
Mr. and Mrs. J. C Roth and sons,
Claude and Floyd, of Redlands, were guests of the Teacherage Sunday.
Floyd Roth has just received his honorable discharge from the navy,
being in the service for nine months on the ship U. S. S. El Captain. He enlisted in the navy last May and during that time made two trips across the Atlantic, touching points in both France and England. On the first return trip to the States, one of the 40 ships in the convoy was struck by a submarine and went down six minutes later. The sailors on the El Captain could see the men in the life boats in the distance but could not go to the rescue. One of the life boats drifted for 23 days and then was picked up by a French torpedo boat. Another, after 86 hours drifted to the coast of Spain. Floyd intends to remain at his home in Redlands for a month and then return to Illinois to take up his former duties.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C McKnapp, of Pa., who are spending the winter in Southern California, and Mr. and Mrs. Buffinger, of Los Angeles, Mr. Harry Martin and Miss Fannie Martin, of Monrovia, and Mr. and Mrs. Welfer, of Los Angeles, were guests at the Hoggarty and martin homes, Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Wilson, who recently accompanied Mr. Wilson Sr. to his home in Chanute, Kan., write that they reached their destination safely with the sick father, and hope to return to the park some time next month.
The Buena Park Farm Center will meet at the school hall next Monday evening, Feb. 17th. Mr. Weaver, of the Joannes Bros. Co., is expected to be present to make a talk in the in-

$710,000 FOR WALNUTS
The 1818 walnut crop handled by the Santa Ana Walnut Growers Association will be fully $80,000 more than the 1917 crop, a new record in itself.
Last year the payroll reached $27,044.79, of which about $16,800 was paid to women in the cracking plant, who averaged $16.89 a week.
Culls have brought an average of 14 cents. When it is remembered that the year, the association was formed, walnuts, the best of them, brought only six cents a pound, the remarkable advance in the walnut industry can be appreciated.
