COOPERATION MAKES HOME CITY SUCCESS; BUY IT AT HOME! Epitome of speech made before annual banquet of Southern California Retail Lumber Dealers Association, at Alexandria Hotel, Jan. 25, 1919, by Byron C. Hanna: The nation is entering upon the threshold of a new day. We do not know what that day holds for us, but we do know that this country today is possessed of a greater power and a wider and more dominating influence than it has ever had before. This imposes upon us greater responsibilities and greater duties than those that have existed in the past. The duties and obligations of an American citizen in the peace that has come and is to continue require no less degree of devotion than the duties and obligations of such citizen during the period of the war. The nation is invincible from without, but it is necessary that we must ever keep the home fires burning within. History teaches us that the downfall of other governments has ever come from corruption and lack of attention to the duties of citizenship from within the government. One of the greatest dangers confronting this nation is the tendency of the people to gather in large centers of population, deserting the small towns and cities for the congested areas of the large cities. This tendency is a menace to the main- tenance of this republic. Cities are a necessary element of our modern life and they are marvelous monuments to the enterprise, prosperity and progress of the nation. Nevertheless, they are really, in the last analysis, necessary evils. It is in cities that the vices or corruption, inattention to the duties of citizenship, and dissipation find the most fertile soil. It will be an unhealthy condition for this government if the small town and cities retrograde and the large cities continue to grow. So long as the nation is supported by a more evenly distributed population, and so long as the small towns and cities are prosperous and maintain an equal growth with the large cities, the future of the nation will be made secure. It is therefore the duty of every person living in a small town-or city to support the community in which such person resides. This can only be done by patronizing the local merchant, for it is the local merchant that makes the small town or the small city. In addition to that it is to the interest of every person reesiding in the small town or city to support the local merchant. It means prosperity for every member of the community. The man who makes a purchase in a city other than that in which he resides must bid his money good-by forever. The man who makes a purchase of the local merchant puts a part of the purchase price back in his own pocket. Every purchase made outside of the community impoverishes the community; every purchase made in the community adds to the wealth of the community. The man who makes a purchase of the local merchant puts a part of the purchase price back in his own pocket. Every purchase made outside of the community impoverishes the community; every purchase made in the community adds to the wealth of the community. Every purchase of the local merchant is an investment in the prosperity of the community. Every purchase made outside of the community enriches one; the seller—every purchase made in the community enriches three; the vendor, the community and the vender. Not only is it a patriotic duty and a direct benefit to the resident of a community to patronize the merchants in that community, but it is a duty which a sense of honor requires a resident of a community to recognize. The local merchant bestows constant benefits upon the members of their community. His place of business is a convenience and a service that every member of the community receives the benefit of. In addition to that the presence of the local merchant in the community contributes to the prosperity of the community. For these reasons the members of the community are placed under obligation to the local merchant and can only discharge that obligation by supporting him to the extent of their ability to do so. It is necessary that the people be educated concerning their relation to the local merchant and his relation to the community. If the people are educated so that they understand the nature of their duty in the premises, the benefit that they receive from the local merchant, and their interest in supporting the local merchant, the small towns and cities will undoubtedly thrive and succeed. CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our sincere appreciation to our many friends and neighbors for their timely assistance when our home was destroyed by fire. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Burrows and Family. THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM SEEK OLD JOBS FOR RETURNING SOLDIERS Through a committee appointed by the State Council of Defense, soldiers and sailors returning to Orange county, so far as possible, are to be given their old jobs or jobs equally as good. This committee is composed of S. H. Finley, Santa Ana, chairman; N. T. Edwards, Orange; R. J. McFadden, Anaheim; A. H. Sutton, Fullerton; E. E. French, Huntington Beach. Scores of men who have already returned from army duty have gone directly into their old jobs. In many instances men have found new jobs. Sometimes, the positions that the men held no longer exist. The chief difficulty that local people who are interested in getting jobs for soldiers have had is in finding employment for men who did not go to service from here. There are a lot of men who left homes in the Middle West and who want to stay on the Coast. "This county army and navy replacement committee," said Col. Finley, "is to co-operate with local committees that are already or will do the same kind of work. Any soldier or sailor who upon returning home falls to receive his former employment should get in touch with the member of our committee who is nearest to him. SUES FOR RETURNS L. J.
