HESTER, Editor THE CONSUMER PAYS THE BILLS The industrial organization of the United States is a web of complex industries, the strands of which are interdependent. The cutting or pulling out of one thread affects the whole fabric. When the cotton spinners of Lawrence succeeded in obtaining an advance in wages the advance was made general throughout the cotton mills of the east, and every wearer of a shirt or a skirt made from cotton between Bangor and Anaheim paid more for the garment. Even before the war, when the coal miners of Pennsylvania demanded that their terms of daily labor should be reduced from eight hours to seven hours, and on Saturdays to five hours, and that they should have 10 percent increase of pay, the result of complying with the demand not only affected the homes. It increased the cost of producing every article of food, or wear, or use of any kind that is made where steam is used as a motive power. An increase in the pay of workmen employed in the building trades increased the rent. The grocer or butcher whose rent was increased in family, your income and the privileges you deemed necessary to proper living. Army of arrogant, outlaw millions had begun a campaign of ruthless world conquest accompanied by crimes against women, children and property. This horror was tsriding toward your home. Yeager agreed to receive training brave the submarines and fight this menace which had taken on forms more terrible than history recorded. As your part of this partnership you were to remain at home, do your part in financing Yeager's crusade, see that his family had financial assistance and pay him $30 a month. You felt that you had a good bargain.
