Haunted houses, carnivals and costume contests will be held throughout Orange County between now and Halloween, Oct. 31.
In Anaheim, the 61st annual Halloween Festival begins at 5 p.m. Thursday with a carnival in La Palma Park. The highlight of the program, which runs through Halloween, will be the parade Saturday. The theme is "Salute to the American Heroes," and Donald Duck, celebrating his 50th year, will be grand marshal.
Floats, bands and mounted units will join the parade, which begins at 7 p.m. alongside La Palma Park at Lemon Street and Anaheim Boulevard
Services Department will host Halloween Howl festival at the Cultural Arts and Re Cedar St.
The festival will include contests, prizes and games will be featured at the Cedar Street center from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 31.
Children
Saturday. The theme is "Salute to the American Heroes," and Donald Duck, celebrating his 50th year, will be grand marshal.
Floats, bands and mounted units will join the parade, which begins at 7 p.m. alongside La Palma Park at Lemon Street and Anaheim Boulevard and moves south on Anaheim to Broadway.
Other festival events will include a costume ball Friday at the Grand Hotel, a pancake breakfast and costume contest for children at La Palma Park from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, a food fair at the park, puppet shows at all branches of the Anaheim Public Library, a junior tennis tournament, a citywide business decoration and employees' costume contest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 31, and a children's poster art contest. A March of Dimes Haunted House will be open daily through the 31st at the Anaheim Plaza mall, and there will be a trick-or-treat program for children at Anaheim Plaza Oct. 31. The carnival at La Palma Park will close at 10 p.m. Sunday.

Santa Ana will stage its annual Halloween Haunting House at Memorial Center, 2102 S. Flower St., Friday through Oct. 31. Early-bird hours for children are 5 to 7 p.m.; the show for older youths and adults will be offered from 7 to 10 p.m.

Activities will include a costume contest and parade, game booths and prizes, free trick-or-treat bags, and performances by a magician and juggler-clown.

Las Vegas entertainer Fats Johnson will headline the Huntington Beach Host Lions Club Halloween Costume Ball at 8 p.m. Friday at the Huntington Harbour Bay and Racquet Club. Ticket proceeds, at $35 a couple or $20 a person, will go to the Lions charities. Costumes are required.

In the Buena Park Mall, a Halloween Spooktacular will begin at 3 p.m. with costume contests in age categories from 5 and under to senior citizens. Candy will be distributed to children by mall stores, beginning at 5 p.m. Carnival game booths also will be set up in the mall. The event is co-sponsored by the city Recreation Department.

In Irvine, a Halloween Headbangers Night rock concert will be staged for teen-agers from 5 p.m. to midnight in the Heritage Park Youth Services Center. Three heavy metal groups will perform. Admission, $5 each, will be restricted to junior high and high school students ages 13 to 18. Identification will be required.
Senior citizens in Irvine will have a costume party and catered dinner party at the Irvine Senior Center from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., with dancing and prizes. The center is at 3 Sandberg Way near the Rancho San Joaquin golf course, about 3½ miles from the Heritage Park Youth Center.
In Tustin, a Halloween festival will begin at 5 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Tustin Boys and Girls Club, 580 West 6th St. Attractions will include a house of horrors, carnival games, films, a costume contest, fortune-telling and a grab bag. Admission will

Several Orange County hospitals will offer free
X-raying of treats on Halloween night for anyone
who wishes to have candy or fruit checked for
foreign objects. The hospitals are Anaheim General,
Anaheim Memorial, Costa Mesa Medical Center,
Fountain Valley Community, Humana
Hospital-Westminster, La Palma Intercommunity,
Mission Community, Tustin Community and
Western Medical Center-Anaheim. Telephone
