MENACE OF BIG MONEY IN ATHLETICS WILL BE DISCUSSED
NEW YORK, Dec. 29.—Menace of "big money" in intercollegiate sports will be pointed out today at the annual meeting of the National Collegiate Athletic association.
Some of the athletic heads gathered here for the session, including Dr. G. L. Meylan of Columbia and Dr. Edgar Fauver of Wesleyan have gone so far as to predict a scrapping of inter-collegiate competition if the commercial evil is not overcome. They point out that the lure of the immense gate receipts, and the necessity for funds to keep up an elaborate athletic system will result in attempts to get winning teams at any price and by any method.
Practically all the delegates, including representatives of nearly every big university in the country, agree that something should be done to curb prosecuting but they do not regard the menace as being acute.
It was pointed out that the evil's hardly could be legislated away but that they can be corrected by strict individual policies at each university against anything that does not measure up to high class ethics of sport.
Benny Leonard Prepares For Bout With Mitchell

Mann Act Charge Made By Acquitted Woman
SEATTLE, Wash., Dec. 29.—Maude Moire-Stubbs, recently acquitted in Knoxville, Tenn., of the murder of a rich automobile merchant, was under the protection of Sheriff Matt Starwich here today, while officers were seeking her husband, W. H. Stubbs, Tacoma hotel proprietor, on a warrant charging white slavery. The woman, only recently returned from Knoxville, found her husband's love had changed. She was beaten by her husband and the "other woman," when they tried to force her to enter a life of shame, she told the officers, according to Starwich. The warrant charging white slavery was sworn to before the Tacona prosecutor.
$2000 Diamond Ring Awaits Identification
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 29.—Did you lose a two-karat diamond ring, size 7 1/2, to a burglar or on the street? If you did., Detective Sergeants Wood and Murphy of detective headquarters are anxious to get in touch with you, for they have such a ring, which is valued at about $2000.
It was taken from a prisoner who gave the name of Walter Sharp, who was arrested at Fifth and Broadway Tuesday evening. If the ring has been stolen, the police want it properly identified by the legal owner.
Rail Express Bandits Get Away With $6000
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Dec. 29.—Police today were searching for two bandits who held up the express messenger of Missouri Pacific train No. 209, Joplin to Kansas City, and riffled the safe in the express car of $6000 in cash and securities late Tuesday night. H. L. Holland, the express messenger, was shot in the leg. The bandits boarded the train at Pleasant Hill, Mo., and got off at Sheffield, a suburb of Kansas City. Holland was shot when he reached for his revolver as he saw the men entering the express car.
Parents of Girl Killed In Car Crash Get $4000
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 29.—A judgment of $4000 was granted yesterday by Judge Shenk as the result of the death of Miss Janice Lubin, secretary of the late Congressman Charles F. Van der Water, against the Italian Vineyard Company. Miss Lubin was killed in the automobile accident in which the congressman met his death on November 20, 1920.
The suit was brought by Melchoir and Elva Lubin, parents of the deceased girl. They sued for $20,000.
A man seldom drops the coin of fair-ness into the slot of self-esteem for the purpose of ascertaining his moral avolddupois.

BIG THEATRICAL BILL
COMING TO ANAHEIM
FRIDAY NIGHT
Anaheim is to be favored with one of the greatest theatrical programs ever presented in this city, according to Managers Ingram and Swope, who handle the reins at the California Theater. In a statement today, they emphasized the fact that the show coming to that theater tomorrow is what might be termed a regular "whiz."
Two distinct features, either of which would head any program of features in a great metropolitan house will be the outstanding features. One of these, Buster Keaton in "The Boat," is positively one of the funniest pictures ever seen here.
The comedy is a scream from the start to finish, and the audience is kept in a continual uproar throughout. Buster Keaton, if he never does another thing, can readily claim lasting fame with this screen classic.
That great feature "Serenade" will also be featured. The theme of this story is powerful, and the cast is exceptional. From the time the curtain goes up on this picture until the final fade-out, the spectators are entranced by the drama supreme.
With the several other added attractions which Managers Ingram and Swope have arranged on this bill, the patrons will be offered something worth while.
Khabarovsk Taken By 'White' Russian Army
WASHINGTON, Dec. 29.—Military forces of the "White" Russian government of Vladivostok have taken Khabarovsk, according to dispatches received at the state department today. The so-called "White" soldiers, who are at grips with the forces of the Chita government, were estimated to number not more than 3000, and military experts profess the belief that they will be unable to maintain an extended line of communication such as the capture of Khabarovsk would necessitate.

Goes to See Officer Is Nabbed as Robber
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 29. It was a trivial matter that Warren Galbraith, 46, wanted to see Detective Sergeant Wallis about yesterday, so he went to the detective headquarters and inquired for the officer.
“Why, you’re the man we want for some Hollywood burglaries!” exclaimed Detective Sergeants Wood and Murphy in unison.
They forthwith locked up Galbraith on suspicion of burglary after making sure they said that he answered fully the description of the suspect who had robbed a number of homes of more than $5000 worth of jewelry, furs and clothing.
Sport Bets Allowed By Alabama Court Ruling
MOBILE, Ala.; Dec. 29. An act of the legislature of Alabama of 1919 prohibiting the making of a wager on a horse race or other form of sport was held unconstitutional here late yesterday in the lower commercial court. Notice of appeal was given by state attorneys. The decision grew out of a test case brought by H. C. Murhan, president of the Mobile Business Men’s Racing Association, which believes the court action assures a ten to fifteen days’ race meeting here in the spring.
Some men consider not getting caught a better policy than honesty.
