SPARKS - MARIE MATCH

SPARKS - MABEE MATCH
WILL BE FAST ONE,
SAYS DARNLEY
(By Billy Darnley)
Never has an event of such nature as the forthcoming wrestling match between Al Sparkes and Roy Mabee—which is to take place next Tuesday night at the Anaheim Athletic Club's arena on North Los Angeles street, created so much interest as this one. Both men are well known citizens of this city and have a host of admirers and friends who are backing them to the limit. Just who rules as favorite at the present time is hard to tell. A safe bet would be "Even Steven." Mabee probably has the edge over Sparkes when it comes to old-man experience, but Al has it over Roy by at least twelve years in age and the old saying. "Youth will be served," might hold true here.
While Sparkes hasn't the cleverness of his rival, still, he is a good deal faster and stronger. The way Al is treating his training partners in the gym in his daily workouts is a shame. Big Vic Baden of the Alexander garage is one husky and no slouch at the game, but Al has been juggling him around like a toy. Charlie Smith, another promising young husky from the Huntington Beach oil fields, is another victim of Sparke's rought-and-ready training methods. There is no getting away from the fact that Al is sure one strong husky boy and he certainly does make it miserable for his training partners. They are always a happy lot when the call of time sounds. On the other hand, while Mabee is not quite as hard or rough on his conditioners, still he keeps 'em all hustling and they are also a happy lot when their work is through for the day. Judging by the way both men are in such earnest training, it is sure going to be one "Humdinger" of a match and one that will give Orange County fans something to talk about for a long time to come.
For the preliminaries, the matchmaker has lined up what he hopes will be a real surprise for the fans in the nature of two snappy boxing bouts between boys who give action all the time. Bennie Heller will battle Kid Louie. Art Espinosa will meet Elmer Foley.
President Kennedy says: "In order to do as much as possible toward reducing the cost of living, the Southern California Edison Company has been aiming to make a reduction of rates for some months past.
"It is true that there has not been any reduction in the cost of labor, as the company has maintained its scale of wages to employees, but on the other hand, there has been an increase in the efficiency of labor which has helped materially in reducing costs of operation, making possible the reduction in rates just announced.
"As the change in lighting rates will become effective almost immediately, and during the darkest period of the year, it will mean a considerable lowering of the lighting bills of all consumers on the Edison system.
"Our experts are making a thorough investigation and comparison of power schedules for service to agricultural and industrial consumers, and it is expected that some interesting and substantial reductions will be announced in these classes of service in the very near future."
PLACENTIA ITEMS
The Mission Circle of the Fullerton Baptist church held their regular monthly meeting Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. J. C. Tuffree. EDISON COMPANY ASKS PERMIT TO REDUCE LIGHT CHARGE
To voluntarily reduce electric lighting charges one cent per kilowatt hour, or from the present maximum rate of nine cents to eight cents, a reduction of eleven per cent affecting one hundred and sixty thousand consumers outside of the city of Los Angeles, the Southern California Edison Company his just filed new lighting schedules with the State Railway Commission.
District Manager W. L. Deimling has received advices from Vice President S. M. Kennedy of the filing of these new schedules which, when approved by the Railroad Commission, will become effective from and after January 1, 1922.
In his communication to District Manager W. L. Deimling concerning the proposed rate reduction, Vice-
