Tuesday, December 13, 1921. BREA NEWS Miss Katherine Reed has been ill the past week at her home on the Hole lease. Paul Ortega and wife spent Wednesday in Los Angeles. Miss Ruby Bird, daughter of George Bird, rig building contractor, has been quite ill at the home of her sister, Mrs. Martha Hunter, South Madrone avenue, Brea. Friday night a Y. M. C. A. club was organized in Brea at the log cabin on the Christian church grounds, Ben Blanchard was elected president, Ernest Everett, vice-president, Earl Schuppert, secretary and William McCombs treasurer. The club will meet Tuesday evenings at the cabin, and all boys in Brea are invited to join. Mrs. Maud Duling and Mrs. Frances Turner, delegates of the Ladies' Auxiliary from Brea local, will leave for Orcutt by auto Tuesday morning to attend the state convention. Two delegates from Whittier and two from Huntington Beach will accompany them. Steen Grane is recovering from a severe case of diphtheria at the home of his father, E. F. Grane, on the Columbia lease. Ed Hathaway of Kansas City, uncle of Lloyd Gabriel of the Brea Central Garage, has arrived by auto and will spend the winter in Southern California. Henry Marcy has moved to 331 South Walnut street, Brea, from Glendale. He is working at the Union warehouse. E. H. Carriker of Montana and Edward Taylor of Los Angeles, are new employees at the Union warehouse. Ben Baxter, cement pipe, 266W, Adv. Mr. Stanford will make his home in Whittier. Miss Carrie Post of Long Beach returned to her home Friday after a week's visit with her sister, Mrs. A. W. Allison and her brother, A. J. Post, both of East Whittier. Sam Rettig of East Whittier is recovering from the effects of an operation for the removal of his appendix. The operation was performed at the West Lake hospital in Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Osborn have returned to their home in La Habra from a six months' trip to Arkansas, where they visited friends and relatives. STORE Keeping pace with the growth of the city in adding improvements from time to time, the S. Q. R. Store has just installed a new Lamon cash carrier system which gives the store quite a metropolitan appearance. There are nine stations on the line from which the clerks can transmit the cash and bills to the cashier's desk on the balcony in the rear of the main sales room. Miss Marie Schacht has been added to the large force of employees of the store as cashier. GARDEN GROVE Grant Adland of Chicago is enjoying a visit at the home of his brother, W. M. Adland and wife this week. Mr. Adland is very favorably impressed with Southern California, and may decide to locate here. The members of the M. E. Sunday school board and their families enjoyed their annual banquet and social time Tuesday evening in the church parlor, about fifty being present. A short business session was also held, officers being elected for the ensuing year. The Kings Daughters class of the Baptist church met at the home of Mrs. C. C. Violett Wednesday afternoon, bor a business meeting and social time. Devotions were led by Mrs. Arrowsmith. Election of officer was held, the following being chosen: Mrs. M. B. Allen, president; Mrs. F. E. Bissitt, vice-president; Miss Maude Aranhalt, secretary; Mrs. Hattie Beardsley, treasurer. Interesting reports were given by members as to how they had devoted one day toward earning money for the church extension. The proceeds for the afternoons amounted to $63, and a number of reports are yet to come in. The hostess served dainty refreshments.
