LA HABRA NEWS Miss Margaret E. Livingston, county librarian, was the principal speaker at the Parent-Teachers association meeting. She urged on the mothers the necessity of a close supervision of their children's reading and told them that the free county library was at their disposal. She also recommended a number of volumes suitable for children. A committee was appointed by the president to take initial steps toward preparations for a show, to be put on by the organization. The committee is composed of Mrs. Terry, Mrs. Hamilton and Mrs. Brown. Fourteen new members were registered for the day. The Women's Club held their regular Thursday meeting at the social hall, with Mrs. Harold Peabody in charge of the program. The first of the meeting was taken up by the reports of committee. Mrs. W. L. Rhodes reported receipts of $40 from the sale of tickets for the "Old Nest." A report by district convention delegates, Mrs. J. L. West and Mrs. W. L. Rhodes, proved very interesting to the members that could not attend the convention. A piano duet by Mrs. H. Peabody, and Miss Myrtle Lutewiler, a reading by Pansy Robbins and a southern dialect story by Lillian Johnson followed by an address by Miss Anita Sheperdson of the Fullerton Union high school, made up the program. Miss Sheperdson's subject, "The Greater Task," was a very illuminating expression if the Effect of Environment of the home life on the average student. Miss Sheperdson showed where the parents might make the home life and the school standing better. She said that as a rule nothing but a "jazz baby" could come from a home that was filled with nothing but jazz music, flamboyant calenders for art, and a family that went every night to the movies. A point upon which she also touched was that there is too much in the modern high school child's life to distract its attention from school, such as many church firs, society and school activities and the like, which take the child away from the home. Woman's club, and Mrs. W. L. Rhodes were guests at the reciprocity day entertainment of the Whittler Woman's club Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Schallert of Appleton, Wis., are recent arrivals here. Mr Schallert expects to go into gusness soon. A literary man found himself in the company of a youth with whom he experienced some difficulty in finding a suitable topic of conversation. He tried books. "Have you read anything good lately?" he asked. "Indeed, what was it?" "Well, I forget the name." "Who was the author?" hopefully. "Well, what was it about?" desperately. "Indeed, I've forgotten." Long pause—then, eagerly, "it had a red cover." A sculling match was arranged between an Englishman and an Irishman. The Englishman won with ease, and at no time was he in danger of defeat. Moreover, in a spirit of fun and bravado, he stopped two or three times in his course, bidding the Irishman in his rear to hurry up. After the race the Irishman came in for a good deal of chaff in view of the overwhelming defeat he had suffered. But he merely shrugged his shoulders. "Faith," he said, "if I had had the long rests that he took, I could have beaten him easily." CITRUS MARKETS NEW YORK, Dec. 10—Four cars of navels sold. Market is strong. Weather fair. A point upon which she also touched was that there is too much in the modern high school child's life to distract its attention from school, such as many church fairs, society and school activities and the like, which take the child away from the home. The home of G. W. Young on Erna street was sold to Roy Bawer of Santa Ana Tuesday, possession to be given soon. Plans are in the making for a fourteen-unit bungalow court on the Florence avenue property recently purchased by Luther Lindaur of C. Newton. Mr. Lindahr's plans embrace a number of special features including a children's play ground, garages and many other modern improvements. The building will be of stucco and the whole will cost $28,000. Mr. and Mrs. W. L. York entertained at dinner Tuesday. Guests were the son and daughter of the family with their families including Mr. and Mrs. Dave Lempke and sons of Placentia, and Mr. and Mrs. Bert York and daughter, Willa Jane, of Whittier. Mrs. Stella Keene of Brea Canyon was an over-night guest at the Davis home on Central avenue. Mrs. R. M. Phillips of Los Angeles, and Miss Loriel Davis of Hollywood were also guests over the week end with their parents. Mrs. Etta Tower, president of the Fordson TRACTOR 625° F.O.B.Detroit Henry 'Henry Ford Was Right When He Said: 'The Tractor will enable the farmer to work fewer hours in the day, giving him more time to enjoy life. I believe the tractor will make farming what it ought to be—the most pleasant, the most healthful, the most profitable business on earth.'" This tractor has done much—very much—in bringing true Mr. Ford's prophecy; for in it is a machine which has harnessed one of the most dependable, efficient, adaptable, economical sources of power in the world—a machine that saves from thirty to fifty per cent of the farmer's time—a machine which many farmers claim plows, harrows or drills as much ground in the same time as four, six or even eight horses. And more—a machine that takes care of every power job on the farm. Call and let’s talk it over, or telephone or drop us a card and we will bring the facts to you.
