TWELVE PAGES Where the Soul of Our County Hospital Monument to Charity THE Soul of Mercy, following a moment of holy meditation gloriously significant to Humanity, whispered an inspired message to the archetype citizenship of Orange County, and they—invariably responsive to righteous appeal—gave the inspiration most beautiful expression in the Orange County Hospital—a splendid, beautiful institution, whose broad, genuinely useful human service has steadily lifted its standard in seven years' time to an eminence which commands the admiration, appreciation, affection and support of all who are sincerely interested in the welfare of mankind! As you swing round the most graceful curve midway on the scenic boulevard between Santa Ana and Anaheim, an impressive building, stately, immaculate and distinguished, suddenly rises before you and challenges your most respectful consideration. It does not, spring out from ambush like bolder buildings of the pagan business type. Apparently, it emerges to greet wayfayers in a most dignified, graceful, cordial and hospitable manner, from its fascinating cloisteral environment—green well-kept lawns, bright colored flowers, gently stirring palms, tall eucalyptus trees swaying over orange groves rich with golden fruit—a truly magnificent setting in the very heart of the famous Valencia Orange Empire—the healthiest, wealthiest and most wonderful section of sunny Southern California—the land of eternal springtime—the "Promised Land!" Certainly the gift of selection conspired successfully with the genius of architecture, when the Orange County Hospital was designed and builted on this charming spot! "Whosoever Will" It seems appropriate to pay a deserved tribute to the great physician, surgeon and executers, who not only direct the destiny of Orange County Hospital, but manages the big farm in connection. Now add to this dual responsibility the fact that he performs most all of the major operations. How he finds time to give so much personal attention to every case under the shelter of the hospital is beyond ordinary understanding. Search the medical institutions of the state of California and you will not find a higher type of director. Dr. Zaiser possesses a fine personality. He comes into the private room or general ward with the refreshing influence of cool, pure exhilarating air. He is not cursed with the "tiger's grin." He smiles naturally and his frank honesty and cultured sense of consideration invites the faith of all the patients who come in personal touch with him on his daily rounds. To his big business task he brings a keen, foresighted, constructive versatile ability. A genius for doing a vast amount of hard work has enabled him to build up a wonderfully efficient organization, every member of which is lovingly devoted to the highest ideals, and positive diagnosis. If there is still a ray of hope for recovery left it quickly responds to conscientious scientific medical or surgical treatment, combined with institutional psychology that banishes all fear and brings the soothing, serene sense of peace, harmony and security. Physiology is now universally recognized as a most powerful factor in the art of healing, and this subtle power is everywhere present at the Orange County Hospital. "Whosoever Will" The friendly portals of the Orange County Hospital swing freely to all the sick and world-weary, to all the scarred souls of society, to all the broken-spirited, to all the burdened hearts, to all who have been wounded and wrecked in the fast, furious, reckless battle of modern life. That pale description hardly portrays the type of "grown-ups" who seek this excellent source of healing and hope. But where are the words to express the holiest emotions, the touching pathos, the finest impulses of heart and soul and mind that cluster about the tender reception and the blessed work that follows of restoring the roses to the wan, faded faces of the little children? Patient, suffering, sweet little souls—poor, helpless little creatures—lovable little patients, who are, of course, given the tenderest care and consideration. "Of Such Is the Kingdom of Heaven" All the fountains of natural affection—all the resources of the most distinguished physicians and surgeons flow out in a supreme effort to cure and to send these "little ones" back into the sunshine of God's great outdoors—back to their wild flower playmates—back to the glorious land of dreams, health, happiness and rollicking laughter! When we witness the intense, concentrated professional devotion of some great physician or surgeon exhausting all his skill and genius and calling upon God for new light in these children cases, particularly the crippled children cases, we visualize the Recording Angel writing down their names on the credit side of the ledger—"for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." We pause to toss a bouquet of appreciation to Beatrice Grant, the capable matron of Orange County Hospital, who possesses the rare gift of exacting the strictest discipline through what appears to the uninitiated to be just the exercise of kindness, consideration and good common sense. So, here's bushels of forget-me-nots for the nurses! It is a musty concept that the great hospital is a huge pile of marble, granite or brick patched together with mortar and distinguished by architectural design peculiar to its mission. The great hospital possesses a heart, soul and mind—the heart, soul and mind of the great men and women who are willing to serve and sacrifice back and build them. No hospital can be greater than its active staff. So, the personal equation—the spiritual side—the holding of high ideals being of the first importance, we gave you just a glimpse of these factors in the development and success of Orange County Hospital. Now we will glance at the material side. second floor are the surgical, ostopedic, delivery, nursery and children's wards. There is a large general ward on the third floor as well as a supplies, sewing, bandage and generally utility department. The building is crowned with a sun parlor which is very alluring as well as beneficial to convalescents. But big and roomy as the main building now is, plans are already under way providing for additional departments. An atmosphere of quietness, calmness, cleantiness and cheerfulness distinguishes every department. Some Cozy Cottages Immediately back of the central building is "the court of cozy cottages," forming a semi-circle about a broad lawn, at the end of which is a chapel and a library. These picturesque little homes covered with clinging vines and nestling in beds of bright their personal friends, and it is unnecessary to say that this department is an extremely active one! There is good music, good singing and good dancing, for what young, healthy girl does not crave all these diversions—even if they have to play for themselves, sing to themselves and dance with each other! The first floor of this building is used as a class room for student nurses. The second floor is the regular quarters for the nurses—reception, dining room, living rooms and library. There is a sun parlor and special sleeping quarters on the roof. All the cooking for patients as well as employees is done by a staff of excellent cooks under the supervision of a specially trained chef. Only the very purest and best food stuffs are used and it is supplied to everybody in abundance. All the vegetables used are raised on the hospital farm as well as most of the meat. The central hospital building is admirably designed for its purpose. The rooms and wards are spacious, perfectly ventilated and sanitary and so arranged that they may be flooded with fresh air and sunshine. The building has what would ordinarily be called a "basement," but it is not a basement since no part of it is under ground through a rather unique arrangement. On this floor is a fine laboratory and X-ray department as well as a large ward for specific cases and a smaller one for mental cases. On the first floor the handsome executive offices of the superintendent and matron are located at the right and left of the main entrance to the hospital. On the same floor are the departments caring for the medical, infectious and mental cases. On the Some Cozy Cottages Immediately back of the central building is "the court of cozy cottages," forming a semi-circle about a broad lawn, at the end of which is a chapel and a library. These picturesque little homes covered with clinging vines and nestling in beds of bright colored flowers are occupied by the indigent patients of Orange County—four persons to each cottage. And it is interesting to see how such residents as are able vie with each other in beautifying this pretty village of God's Own." It is a delightful place for the aged, the indigent, the helpless to watch out the sunset of their lives—the welcome guests of a whole-hearted community. The dormitory for the nurses is a beautiful building of graceful attractive design. This is the study and home of the faithful, hard-working nurses. Every comfort and convenience contributing to their comfort is installed. There is a clever, little kitchenette where the nurses may prepare a luncheon when entertaining Private Dining Rooms In another part of this building there are three separate dining rooms, one for the nurses, one for the employees, one for the indigent patients. The atmosphere of all departments of this service building is home-like, bright, cheerful and absolutely clean. There is a first class steam laundry operated by the most modern machinery to take care of all the laundry of patients as well as employees. This department like all the others shows that cleanliness is rated next to godliness. Artesian wells supply the purest water for the central hospital and other buildings, while a new reservoir has been built to hold a sufficient reserve supply of water for irrigation. HERALD If your goods are not moving as fast as you want them to, a well worded display ad in The HERALD will solve the problem. NO. 21. Orange County Farm Is Model for World regitation purposes. A water tower constitutes protection against fire. Orange County Farm The Orange County farm is fast approaching a stage where it may be called "model." All kinds of vegetables are raised and an orange grove not only supplies the needs of the hospital but is a lucrative source of income, helping to support the institution. Considerable attention is given to hog raising and the farm boasts of a herd that is conspicuous for its high breeding. They furnish the meat for hospital patients and farm employees as well. They are housed in a highly sanitary way. Here as everywhere else the most scruplous cleanliness is observed. But over and above all, the features of the farm are the herd of pure-bred Holsteins and a model dairy! Model Dairy On Farm The Orange County Dairy has been authoritatively declared to be the most sanitary dairy in the state of California and this official declaration has rewarded the earnest efforts of the board of supervisors and Hospital Superintendent Dr. Zaiser to establish a model dairy. A herd of registered Holsteins is of primary importance to the most desirable results in acquiring a first class dairy, but fine as are the animals that compose the herd, there is also cause for pardonable pride in the dairy barn which houses them. The county caught the vision of leadership in dairy cattle improvement and this vision has been realized through the most careful, consistent and constructive work, which will be broadened and bettered from year to year. Dr. Zaiser, who is one of the most enthusiastic advocates of a dairy being conducted on highly sanitary as well as highly scientific lines, displays his personal pride of achievement in who is directly in charge of this pure-bred, aristocratic herd, headed by Orange King Segius Pontiac, gives them more conscientious consideration than is generally given to royalty in these days of "contemptuous" democracy. The Future of the Hospital The high ideals of the personnel of the county hospital's organization are modestly shown but very impressive. These ideals are so strongly established and so completely recognized and honored, as to preclude the necessity of any extraordinary defense against the mischievous political corruptionists, whose baneful work has menaced and sometimes ruined similar institutions. However, the potential significance of this beneficient institution to the whole community—its chance of magnificent development—its great destiny now so clearly outlined—must serve to assure its future progress against any imminent hampering forces. Conclusion It is not given to us to know what wonderful things we weaving in the loom of the future—we do not know what marvelous achievements may be credited to the busy brain of Science, but we do not have to possess the gift of prophecy to fortell that the great minds charged with the expansion and development of Orange County Hospital and similar institutions, discover and establish many new things which will help brush many more tears of sorrow, suffering and pain from sad faced, afflicted humanity and cause the whole world to burst into blossom from sheer joy! Disease of Metals Some authorities hold that metals suffer from contagious diseases analogous to those of living beings. Among these so-called diseases one of the most striking is that called "tin pest." Sometimes a block, or plate or medal of tin, attacked by this malady, crumbles and falls into dust, and sometimes watry protuberances appear on the surface of the metal. Various other metals, which have been hardened by plastic strain, suffer from a malady which manifests itself by a spontaneous recrystallization. The most remarkable cases occur with lead and hard-drawn brass. These troubles are not due, as has been thought, simply to moisture. Temperature plays a great part in producing them. The most singular fact, perhaps, is that "tin pest" is capable of spreading by contagion. Risked Their Lives By human experimentation the human tick has been proved to be the transmitting agent of relapsing fever in Panama, according to information received in Washington. Three human volunteers risked their lives by being infected with the fever after tests on white rats and monkeys had indicated that the ticks carried the relapsing fever spirochaetes from one animal to another. In the experiments conducted by Lewis B. Bates, Lawrence H. Dunn and Joe H. St. John of the board of health laboratory and Ancon hospital, in the Canal Zone, one volunteer had injected beneath his skin some blood from a white rat infected with relapsing fever. Into another of the patients was injected hypodermically a suspensich of naturally infected ticks, while the other volunteer submitted to being bitten by naturally infected ticks. All of these men fell ill with the fever and, with the evidence provided by animal experimentation, this is considered conclusive proof that the human tick is the carrier of the germ of relapsing fever.
