WHAT'S BEGOME OF OLD TIME OX WHIP Perhaps in some museum may be found one of those ox whips which used to be in almost every farm house in the country. This ox whip was not an instrument of brutality, though it was used in driving a team, either a two, four or six-yoke team of steers. Steers broken to their rude and clumsy gear were generally gentle and docile beasts and needed no lashing of the whip, and, indeed, the old-fashioned ox whip of the southern colonies and the southern states was not contrived for the purpose of inflicting punishment. The skillful user of this whip directed his team by the spoken word—which was generally spoken loud—companied by a signal with the whip. The signal was given by "cracking" the lash or the "cracker," or by touching the ox with the "staff." Men and boys took pride in making a whip and in the loudness with which they could "crack" it and the accuracy with which they could flick a fly or a leaf with the lash. The staff was the shaft of a young cedar tree, stout, but tapering and flexible, five to seven feet long. The whip was finely pleated from long strips of leather cut from old bootlegs. A man using a pocketknife would start at the center of a bootleg and cut a thin and continuous strip of leather, cutting round and round until the bootleg was consumed. Pleating three or four of these strips, he would make a whip ten or fifteen feet long. At the end would be a "cracker" or lash of pleated cord about a foot long with a raveled piece at the end three or four inches long. A dextrous man could twirl the whip about his head, making the letter "S." and crack it as loud as a pistol shot.
