OCEAN'S DEPTH STILL UNKNOWN TO SCIENCE Difficulties encountered in deep sea soundings are discoloured by a marine engineer. Deep sea soundings of late years, he says, has become a very exact science. When a ship is thousands of miles from land the real work begins. To sink a lead to a quite shallow depth is the easiest thing in the world. But when it comes to working in miles, sailors are brought up against a different problem. Even today nobody knows exactly where the greatest depth exists, for the simple reason that no instrument at present invented can reach the bottom in the deepest parts. A theory accredited by scientists is that below a certain depth solid matters refuse to sink, because the pressure of the water is so great that specific gravity is overcome. It is widely held that when ships sink in the deepest parts of the ocean they never reach bottom, but float about suspended in the water at a depth below which their weight is not sufficient to take them. The greatest depth which has been sounded is just over five miles, but it is thought parts of the ocean are perhaps four times as deep. In this branch of nautical service wonderful instruments are used. At tached to the leads of the sounders, which weight seventy pounds and are suspended on piano wires, are specially constructed cups, which close automatically and bring up samples of the ocean's bed. They are provided with a dial, on which the depth touched by the leads is at once recorded, and are in use in all ocean-going cable ships, which must of necessity determine of what the ocean bed consists. Large Eagle Tries To Take Wild Goose A large eagle was captured at Three Lakes, Wash., by F. W. Rounds while it was fishing hard to carry off a wild goose. The goose was attacked while swimming. W. Rounds while it was fishing hard to carry off a wild goose. The goose was attacked while swimming. The eagle's talon entered the side of the goose, which promptly drew its wings down tightly, preventing the sharp claws from being withdrawn. The eagle could not release its hold on the heavy bird, and as the life of the goose slowly waned, the larger bird was in danger of drowning. Rounds waded into the lake and captured both. The eagle was large enough to have carried off the goose had not the water weighted its pinnions. Street Car Is Used To Plow Roadway Recently, when the Sioux Falls traction system had found it necessary to plow up the roadway in order to install a switch, it decided to use its own power for this work. To one of its work cars it fastened as a side outrigger a ten by ten inch timber, fastened to which was an extra heavy breaking plow. The heavy chain which pulled the plow could be sled back and forth on the outrigger timbers. In order to adjust the position of the furrow. The improvised work car plow accomplished more in three hours than could have been done in a day's time with teams. Long Time Needed To Reach Dog-Star One astronomer, whose measures of the parallaxes of the stars, by means of which their distances can be calculated, are among the most accurate known, has deducted anew the results of his observations of Sirius, the dog-star, which is the brightest star in the heavens. He thinks we may now regard its parallax as satisfactorily determined at .37 of a second of arc. This makes the distance of Sirius in miles 51,000 billion. In other words, the dog-star is nearly five hundred and fifty times farther from the earth than the sun. Wise men cultivate the art of taking things easy.
