The second installment of John Matthews' treatise on "The Sabbath" calls largely with a review of Peter Kers' chronology. The article was prepared by the father of Newton Matthews of Fullerton. The conclusion follows: (A Treatise by John Matthews) Review of Dr. Akers' Chronology Having shown in a former letter that Saturday was the Jewish Sabbath, my readers may be curious to know what I have to say about the Christian Sabbath. Well, we will first问 what Mr. Akers has to say about His Chronology is our text book these letters. We will quote a sentence or two at a time from p. 113. "It is remarkable, also, then when he risen Lord opened the understanding of his decipies, that they might understand the Scriptures, they immediately adopted the Lord's Day as their Sabbath of rest." I regret that Mr. Akers did not refer to the particular passage in the Scriptures that relate to the Lord's day, and particularly those which point it out "as their Sabbath of rest." In order that may not be tedious, I will bluntly say, there is no such passage in the Bible. The Lord's day is spoken of but once in the Bible, Rev. 1:10, and not there spoken of as a Sabbath. The word "Sabbath" occurs 115 times in the Old Testament, sometimes in relation to Sabbatical years; sometimes in relation to feast days; and sometimes in relation to the day of the week; but when it relates to the day of the week it always relates to the seventh day, which I need not stop here to argue is Saturday. And in the New Testament, the word "Sabbath" occurs 60 times and when it refers to any day of the week, it always refers to the Jewish Sabbath. A Christian Sabbath is not mentioned, nor even hinted at, in the New Testament. But let us hear again from Mr. Akers. "And why did they adopt this" (the Lord's) "day? It does not appear that any special change was ordered either by Christ or His apostles; and yet thousands of zealous after a certain practice by di- grave, after His crucifixion. And it was given to the Jews, and to no other nation because it was from Abraham's lineage that he was to be born. It was given to them as a "sign" between them and God. Ex. xxxl. :17. The argument, then, that there was a Sabbath in use by all nations, or any nation, prior to the Jewish Sabbath, on Sunday, or any other day, is wholly preposterous, and without the least shadow of evidence. The anti-deluvians never heard tell of the Savior, and consequently of the Sabbath neither. Hence the necessity of His Chronology is our text book these letters. We will quote a sentence or two at a time from p. 113. "It is remarkable, also, then when he risen Lord opened the understanding of his decipies, that they might understand the Scriptures, they immediately adopted the Lord's Day as their Sabbath of rest." When first driven, the well threw up a column of water six inches in diameter. After a while it began to spout alternately, sand and water. Recently blue clay has taken place of both sand and water. There seems to be an endless supply of clay, and the pressure on it in the bowels of the earth must be tremendous. It completely fills the 6-inch pile, and issues at the top like a gigantic sausage, rising to a height of five or six feet before it topples ever. It is necessary to remove the deposit of clay in order to save the well from becoming buried under it. The clay does not flow continuously, but it is said, usually commences a little before the advent of windy and stormy weather, indicating a change in the pressure due to the state of the atmosphere. Miss Cole formerly taught in the kindergarten department of the Yorba Linda schools. Mrs. P. Ton of Yorba Linda entertained a few friends with a sewing bee Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Yester Burnison returned home Wednesday after a week in Los Angeles, the guest of her sister, Mrs. H. H. Hendricks, and her aunt, Mrs. Gardiner. Mrs. Frank Brashear entertained her sister, Miss LuLa Wiley and niece, Hazel Wiley, of Downey Thursday. J. H. Watkins and family moved to But let us hear again from Mr. Akers. "And why did they adopt this" (the Lord's "day"? It does not appear that any special change was ordered either by Christ or His apostles; and yet thousands of zealous Jews, after a contrary practice by divine appointment for the space of 674 solid years, suddenly adopted the first day of their week, as the accredited Sabbath day of the church of God! Surely they did this because when their understanding was opened, they understood the Scriptures as teaching them so to do." Here we again have Mr. Aker's opinions without a single quotation of Scripture to support them. Any man can prove anything he pleases by the Scriptures, of opinions alone amount to proof. The rebels of the South can prove slavery to be right, because they understand the Scriptures to justify it. The invertebrate can prove that it is right for him to get drunk, fall down, and spew. Brigham Young can prove that it is right for him to have seventy wives, while young Joe Smith can prove that it is right for him to have but one. So it seems from Mr. Akers' understanding of the Scriptures, that anything and all things, are right to any man who can understand the Scriptures to justify him in his course, whether he has a "thus saith the Lord" for it or not. His understanding is to be his rule of action, whether the written law of the Lord favors his proclivities or not. Mr. Akers is a great man, occupies a high station in life, is a great preacher, and is a professor in college; but I have long since learned that the station a man occupies does not, or ought not, to entitle his opinions to a preponderance of facts. He acknowledges that the Scriptures do not "specially" point out Sunday as the Sabbath, but he thinks that when men "understandings" are "opened by the Scriptures," they will so understand it! Let us quote a few more of Mr. Akers' own words: "So certainly did the Scriptures point out for the people of Messiah a different Sabbath day to that of the Jews. * * * It is called the Lord's day, not, we apprehend, merely because He arrose from the dead on the first day of the week, * * * but principally because He thereby declared that to be the Sabbath day which he originally made for man." p. 113. I could give many more extracts from Mr. Akers' book, all tending to the same points, namely, that the original Sabbath was Sunday, and that all nations observed that day down to the Exodus, and that then the Sab- and September, Old Style." S. 375. Mr. Akers says it commenced on the seventh. Which of the two is nearest right I prefer not to say; but the probability is that they, and the Jews, are certainly right as to the Sabbath. For if God gave them the Sabbath, as the Bible says He did. He certainly gave it to them right, as He does all things right; and the Jews have kept it ever since with great pertinancy, death being the penalty for a violation of the commandment. Ex. 31:14. Mr. Akers' argument that if the seventh day of their first week was a Sabbath and the first day of their first year was Monday, that that proves decisively that the Sabbath was Sunday, amounts to no proof of anything, save the incorrectness of their chronology. Mr. Akers might with as much force of argument prove his age of the world at the birth of Christ, (5546) to be correct, because he started his computation on a certain day of the week. His argument founded on the lunar cycles is equally defective. He starts his cycles on Monday the first day of the Jewish era. Is that according to the Bible? Mr. Akers certainly knows it is not. According to the Bible, the Moon was not made till the evening of the thirdrd, or morning of the fourthth erection day, neither of which can be claimed to be Monday. WHAT a wonderful feeling of secrecy to feel that whatever its $1,000,000, the proportion of pride in I could give many more extracts from Mr. Akers' book, all tending to the same points, namely, that the original Sabbath was Sunday, and that all nations observed that day down to the Exodus, and that then the Sabbath was changed so far as the Jews were concerned, to Saturday; then changed from the resurrection of Christ back to Sunday. Let us now examine the premises: 1. I find no authority for saying there was a Sabbath in use by any nation, prior to the Jewish Sabbath, which was instituted when the world was probably 2353 years old. 2. The Sabbath as given to the Jews, and to no other nation. When other nations mingled with the Jews, they were then, and only then, required to keep the Sabbath with the Jews. Deut. 5:14-15. This is another proof that the Jewish era is incorrect, and that Mr. Akers' theory is at fault. Men's erroneous calculations do not change facts. Mr. Akers says, "And on Saturday, the twenty-seventh of March, the same Julian year, B. C. 1647 * * Moses conducted the Children of Israel out of bondage." p. 76. I have no doubt that in this calculation he is correct. If so, the Passover was instituted on Friday night; and, as we know, the Children of Israel started their journey the next morning, and continued traveling for many days, it does not look much like there was any Sabbath then in use, for after God by Moses gave them the Sabbath, they were not so much allowed to pick up an armful of sticks on the Sabbath for any purpose, on the penalty of death. This does not look much like there was any Sabbath observed, either on Saturday or Sunday, or any other day, prior to that given at Sin by Moses, recorded in the sixteenth chapter of Exodus. Prior to the promise which was made to Abraham, there was no use for a Sabbath, and I venture to say there was none in use; for the Sabbath was given as a type of the rest of the Savior in the WHAT a wonderful feeling of secreteness to feel that whatever its $1,000,000, the proportion of pride in same!
