What Day Is the Sabbath?
That is the question discussed in a treatise written more than sixty-five years ago by John Matthews, father of Newton Matthews of Fullerton. The paper was written especially for the old Herald of Boston for which Mr. Matthews was a correspondent. At that time he lived in Basco, Ill.
That the question of slavery entered into discussions of all sorts at that time is evidenced by the reference to the subject in this treatise in which Mr. Matthews says: "Any man can prove anything he pleases by the Scriptures if opinions alone amount to proof. The rebels of the south can prove slavery to be right, because they understand the Scriptures to justify it."
The first part of the treatise follows:
(A Treatise by John Matthews)
Why do professing Christians keep the Sabbath? What day is the Sabbath? Some say Saturday, and some say Sunday. But what says the Bible? We will look into that, and whatsoever it says, let that be the answer. If it says keep the Sabbath, let us keep it; and if it specifies a day, let that be the day. If we keep a Sabbath at all, it should be because the Bible commands it, and it should be the day pointed out by the Bible.
Well, first of all, it is said, "And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested the seventh day from all His work which He had made." Gen. 11-2. This is the last we hear about a day of rest till 2354 years afterwards; God commanded Moses to say to Israel, "Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord: whosoever doeth any work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Wherefore the children of Israel (not the Gentiles) shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever; for in six days the Lord made Heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested, and was refreshed." Ex. xxxi 15-17.
And again Paul says after that ye have kept rather are known of Christ again to the weak and serve days," (same months," (new moon (set feasts), "and year years). Gal. IV. 9-10 come of none effect ever of you are justified ye are fallen from grace.
How it ever got in some professing Christmas was the original the Sabbath was chanday to Sunday, I cannot not one word of authon in the Bible. There of changing the day he said, "Keep the rejection from; the great seventh, or Sabbath," it? No, not a word oced the seventh day and called it the Sabwhat earthly power seventh to the First, holiness to another fact is, through the forefathers, and falses some men of sense afor instance, as Petz that Sunday was therand that we are bourMoses to observe it laws of Moses do not keep any day. When "Blotting out the hard nances that was agreit," (the law), "cut off it to his cross." "I fore judge you in my or in respect of an new moon, or of twhich are a shadow come; but the body II. 14-16.

manded Moses to say to Israel. "Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord: whosoever doeth any work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever; for in six days the Lord made Heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested, and was refreshed." Ex. xxxi 15-17.
Is there anything in this passage binding on a Christian, or on anyone but a Jew, I say not. This sign was to discriminate between the Jews and all other nations.
"I am the Lord, your God, which have separated you from other people. **** And ye shall be holy unto me; for I, the Lord, am holy, and have severed you from other people, that you may be mine." Lev. xx 24-26.
Jews may become Christians, but then they are not under the law. Now I have reached a point which will startle some professing Christians. They verily believe that Sunday is the original Sabbath, and that all mankind are under the laws of Moses, and ought to keep the commandment, "Keep the Sabbath holy." What does the law of Moses say? "A prophet shall the Lord, your God, raise up unto you, of your brethren like unto him, shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you."
That prophet was Christ; and what does He say? Does He say, "Keep the Sabbath?" Or does any of His apostles say "Keep the Sabbath?" I answer, "No." In no instance is a Christian commanded to keep the Sabbath. Before Christ came and set up His kingdom, there were no Christians; and since the establishment of His kingdom, there has been no command given to keep the Sabbath. Moses says, "Hear Him." Well, what does He say? He says nothing on that subject.
Christ was often chided by the Jews for not keeping the Sabbath, but He never once commanded anyone to keep it, though he rendered a part of the commandments contained in the law. And His apostles, though they often told the people what to do, and what not to do, never commanded the observance of the Sabbath. They were mostly silent on that subject, rather than incur the malevolence of the Jews on so unimportant a question to Christians. Hear how cautiously Paul touches on that subject," One man esteemeth one day above another; another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the laws of Moses do not keep any day. Whose blotting out the harms that was agonized it ("the law"), "cut it to his cross." "For judge you in my or in respect of an new moon, or of the which are a shadow come; but the body II. 14-16.

day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth it not the day, to the Lord, he doth not regard it." Rom. XIV 5-6.
And again Paul says: "But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements," (the law). "where unto ye desire again to be in bondage? Ye observe days," ("sabbaths"), and months," (new moons)," and times("set feasts"), "and years," ("sabbatheal years"). Gal. IV. 9-10. "Christ is become of none effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace."
How it ever got into the heads of professing Christians that Sunday was the original Sabbath, or that Sabbath was changed from Saturday to Sunday, I cannot tell. There is not one word of authority for either in the Bible. There is no possibility of changing the day. Christ might have said, "Keep the day of my resurrection from the grave instead of the seventh, or Sabbath," But did He say it? No, not a word of it. If God rested the seventh day and hallowed it, and called it the Sabbath of the Lord, what earthly power could change the seventh to the first, and transfer its holiness to another day? Now the fact is, through the ignorance of our forefathers, and false traditions, even some men of sense and learning, such for instance, as Peter Acres, contend that Sunday was the original Sabbath and that we are bound by the laws of Moses to observe it as such. But the laws of Moses do not bind Christians to keep any day. What does Paul say? "Blotting out the hand-writing of ordinances that was against us, and took it," (the law), "cut of the way, nailing it to his cross." "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days; which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ." Col II. 14-16.
Gavel Used By Mayor Has Unique History
VANCOUVER, Wash., Dec. 6—Mayor Kiggins swings a gavel at council sessions that has a unique history.
The head was made from a piece of the old witness trees that once stood at the foot of Main street and from which nearly all surveys in the northwest started.
Each side of the head is inlaid with wood taken from a piece of timber used in the first dock erected at Vancouver. This is from the first apple tree planted in Vancouver in 1828 by the Hudson Bay Company.
The head bears the inscribed names of the first city council chosen in 1858. Levi Farnsworth was mayor at that time.
The gavel was made and presented to the city in 1913 by Chat Knight. It makes more noise than any other gavel.
Purebred swine in the United States January 1, 1920, as shown by the fourteenth census returns, numbered 2,049,900 or 3.5 per cent of the 59,346-409 swine on farms at that time. The purebred totals include: Berkshire, 86-, 676; Chester White, 191,207; Duroc-Jersey, 819,117; Essex, 3310; Hampshire, 106,960; Poland China, 726,503; Spotted Poland-China 47,512; Tamworth, 5503; Yorkshire, 6170, and all other breeds and not specified, 56,939. Purebred sheep numbered 463,504.
One of the most impressive flocks of milk goats seen at the San Francisco show was that of the Los Coabritas Toggenburg Farm at Montara, owned by Miss Irmagrade Richards and Miss Morris Wagner. These two young ladies are most enthusiastic goat-breeders and have written a book entitled "Modern Milk Goats," which is very instructive. They have sold their doe that was grand champion at the State Fair to L.E. Bonsieur of Elryia, O., for the neat sum of $900. They have been breeding and studying goats for eight years and have 125 head of Toggenburgs.

Might it not be economy to give mother, wife or daughter the benefit of the most modern wash day methods—the methods we offer?

OBSERVATIONS
By CHARLES KUCHEL
The bureau of census for 1920 gives some interesting figures concerning the growth of California and Arizona, and three of the northwest states—Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. The three states and California have increased between 25 to 50 per cent in population during the past ten years while Arizona has increased over 50 per cent. While California as a whole shows an increase of nearly 50 per cent, the extreme southern part of the state shows an increase of 75 per cent and over. The west is rapidly being inhabited with people from the middle western states. In all probability within the next ten years Southern California will double its population. Westward, Mo!
When Roy Gardner was captured out in Arizona by a mail clerk, who was unarmed, while the former was trying to "stick up" the latter, the ubiquitous express car visitor remarked: "If you had had a gun your wife would be a widow today. I never hurt an unarmed man." By using the adverb "never" it would appear that Roy is not through with the game. Tell it to the marines.
If you hold your ear to the ground one may detect distant sounds likened to the holding of a sprightly municipal election next April. Already a well-known west-side citizen shows signs of being in the hands of his friends, while another, who lives to the extreme southeast, from all accounts, has his lightning rod up. And there may be others. Casting shadows.
The world is pretty much the same everywhere and occasionally here and there you run across a "knocker," but the specie is becoming rare. When you find a fellow who knocks, he's a good deal like his motor. There's something wrong.
A little bird whispers that a win-some spinster has set her cap for a widower, who is looked upon as being one of the best catches of the season. It is even said their admiration for each other is mutual, and that wedding bells will soon be ringing. Man came first and woman after.

Many good citizens are in favor of
increasing the police force. While
this city may be classed as fortunate
in not having had to deal with the
criminal element that infests many
other places, there is no telling what
might happen. Some citizens suggest
that an adequate patrol be maintained
at all times to minimize crime, which
sounds good. The brighter side.
A merchant's patrol is also recomended. By this means business
men would be given added protection,
which is as necessary as their insurance. Crooks are on the job at all
times and it might be well to let
them know they are being watched.
Look under the lid.
