News Notes of the Oil Fields
WHITTIER-SANTA FE SPRINGS
Drilling at 2825 feet the Southern California Oil Company's Sanderson No. 1 continues to show gas in increasing quantities and occasionally strong oil colors.
As announced last week Whitley No. 5 is redrilling and now deepening at 2600 feet. No. 6 drilling at 3225 is in brown shale and is expected to pick up the oil sand soon.
The La Habra Midway recovered the lost bit at 1800 feet and is now drilling in the brown shale at 1834. The showings that have been reported were shale showings only. Production is not expected short of 3000 feet.
The Standard Oil Company's Bastanchury No. 1 completed at 4440 made a flush production of 200 barrels, but soon settled down to 100. The Bastanchury property was formerly developed by the union. The Standard is not getting much better results in the way of producers than the Union. The property simply does not carry the oil in big quantity.
The Union Oil Company's Bell gusher is living up to its name. The production was increased from 1400 to 2700 by simply changing the flow nipple from 3-8 to 5-8. The oil has increased in gravity 2 points now standing at 33. The Union is rushing development work with 5 new wells. Flood No. 1 saddled in and is drilling. Alexander No. 1 is building rig. Sanchez No. 1 is rigging up. Farwell No. 1 is setting boilers, and Howard No. 1 is getting the material on the ground.
The Union Oil Company's Meyer No. 5 down 4977 feet is fishing for 7 joints of 3 inch drill pipe. No. 4 at 4220 has a bailer in the hole. Both wells are in the hard sand and have not shown any indications of oil. Meyer No. 3 at 4535 has slipped on production and is now making only about 30 barrels.
The Union will develop the Bell property as rapidly as possible. Three new wells are under way. No. 2 is building rig. No. 3 is building rig and No. 4 has the material on the ground.
The Amalgamated Oil Company's Butterworth at 4682 continues to surready to spud in. Wolskill No. 1 is setting the boilers. South Whitttier Community No. 1 is building rig and a location has been made for No. 1.
The Shell Company of California has leased the Thompson and B. & H. Community properties and will begin operations in a few days.
MONTEBELLO
After trying for a water shutoff for three months it looks like the Arcadia Oil Company has got a job at 2828. The casing test showed no water and the result of the cementing awaits the Mining Bureau's decision. With the water shutoff the Arcadia expects to get production in the next two or three hundred feet.
At Scott-Arnold No. 1 the Columbia Oil Company got out of the fishing job at 2980 and is ready to go ahead. Adobe No. 4 stands cemented at 3100 feet.
The Comancane Oil Company has cleaned out La Merced Manly No. 1 to 2800 feet and will endeavor to put this well on production soon. Clakins No. 1 is to be drilled to 4200 feet, the idea being to pick up the deep producing sands from which the St. Helen's eggleston produces.
At best the Keeler Oil Company's Walters No. 1 looks like a small well. The well completed at 3865 has been on a production test for a week and is doing about a hundred barrels.
On the McGinley property No. 14 at 2550 is the only drilling well. No. 10 stands idle at 2300, and No. 15 set 94 feet of stove pipe and is standing.
By rigging up on the Mullholland No. 4 the Petroleum Midway will get as close as its properties permit to the big Eggleston well. Prugh No. 9, the spectacular performer, is being deepened and is now drilling in the oil sand at 3560. Germain I-B is getting straightened out and is now re-drilling at 3640. Baldwin T-A cemented through perforations at 3003.
The St. Helens Petroleum's Eggleston, the sensation of the Montebello field, has now been on production two months. The well is making 1000 barrels net oil and the gas production stays around 16 million cubic feet. The percentage of water in the well varies from 28 to 40 per cent. Redrilling of Monterey No. 4 is now at 2600 in hard sand. Monterey No. 6 at 2100 is in hard sand and No. 7 shows 1775 in shale and boulders. P. & B. No.1 landed the 4-inch at 3600 and will soon be ready to produce.
speculation geologically the territory is not rated very high.
The St. Helens Petroleum Company struck about 3 feet of what looked like real oil sand at 2333. The showing was good enough to take a chance on and pope was set at the above depth.
HAWTHOPNE-REDONDO
The Kitselman Oil Company has abandoned the idea or getting oil at Hawthorne and is getting ready to make a commercial gas well out of the Lausinger No. 2. This well was drilled to 2678 feet and has shown a lot of gas for some time. An effort will be made to clean the hole out and put the well in condition to produce gas.
Drilling at Bohon No. 2 another gasser is at 700 feet, the bottom of the hole being 1365, Hicks (No.2 will be re-cemented in a final effort to shut off bottom water at 3820, and test out REDONDO
The Chansler Canfield Midway has two wells drilling at Redondo. The Del Amo is now down to bottom drilling and is making new hole at 3037, Dominguex No.1 is making hole at 1400 feet and is going nicely.
The General Petroleum is the third company to commence active operations at Redondo. The G.P.is building a rig on the Petitfills property and will be drilling in ten days.
The Union Oil Company did not get a shutoff on the Francis No.1 and is drilling ahead at 2700 feet.
The Union has shut down and temporarily suspended Sonmers No.1 at 4553. The best this well showed was some brown shale and a little gas. Drilling will probably be resumed soon and a deep test hole made.
SAN PEDRO-POINT FERMIN
The San Pedro-Point Ferminal Oil Company is no drilling at 600 feet. The formation is alternating between hard and soft layers of sandy shale. According to the geologist's report before drilling was started the sulphur water scheduled for 550 or 600 feet has been struck. There is a possibility that this sulphurwater has medicinal value and will be tested out.
Drilling on the Los Angeles Harbor and Development Company's well is now at 925 feet where the shale is carrying the customary surface oil showings.
LOS ANGELES FIELD
Drilling at 2625the Beauty Oil Company's Eagle Rock well is in brown
The Union Oil Company's Meyer No. 5 down 4977 feet is fishing for 7 joints of 3 inch drill pipe. No. 4 at 4220 has a baiter in the hole.
The Amalgamated Oil Company's Butterworth at 4682 continues to surprise its owners. A production increase from 275 to 325 and a gravity increase from 34 to 35.7 occurred last week. Butterworth No. 2 is rigging up and Delugge No. 1 is building rig.
The Chansler Canfield Midway is about rigged up on property adjoining the Union's Bell and should be drilling before the end of the week.
The Central Oil Company is building a rig on its tank farm property and will be drilling just as soon as the rigging up work is done.
The General Petroleum has staked a location for Spring No. 1 and intends to go right ahead with drilling.
Drilling at 1000 feet the Nevada Ventura is in hard sand and boulders, drilling is going slow. Oil men are beginning to figure that the Nevada-Ventura will get production at 3700. Practically all the available property has been leased up around both the Scientific and Nevada-Ventura. The Scientific is now making hole at 1565, blue shale.
The Petroleum: Midway is about to spud in at Los Nietos, the rigging up being well under way the first of the week.
No time is being lost by the Standard on the Brownrigg-Kellar. Drilling is now at 2200. Fast time with the rotary through a hard formation field is being made. L. A. Trust and Security No.' spuddedin Saturday and now shows 1000 feet. Rigging up is practically completed at Sanchez No. 1. Pacific Clay Pipe No. 1 is mentored through perforations at 3008.
The St. Helens Petroleum's Eggleston, the sensation of the Montebello field, has now been on production two months. The well is making 1000 barrels net oil and the gas production stays around 16 million cubic feet. The percentage of water in the well varies from 28 to 40 per cent. Drilling of Monterey No. 4 is now at 2600 in hard sand. Monterey No. 6 at 2100 is in hard sand and No. 7 shows 1775 in shale and boulders. P. & B. No. 1 landed the 4-inch at 3600 and will soon be ready to produce.
Drilling on the Standard Oil Company's Howard-Smith No. 1 spudded up last week and over a 1000 feet of hole was made. Drilling is now at 1700 in hard sand. On the Baldwin lease No. 59 is drilling at 2200, the rig is up for No. $6 and No. 61 has been located.
Sidetracking at 3135 covers the field operations of the Western Pacific at Montebello.
PUENTE HILLS
Bardeen was unable to pull the six inch casing at Getty No. 1 and re-cement at 2260.
Last week we reported the Chino-Corona United drilling at 3820. The figure was a mistake. Drilling is now at 3703 where some showings of light oil were noted. It is the intention now to set the 9-inch at 3578 and shut off all the top heavy oil and water.
With plenty of oil in the hole and lots of gas behind it the problem of making the well produce to the best of advantage seems to require time for solution. The well has shown a capacity of 300 barrels when pumping unhindered.
The Pasadena Puente Oil Company is cleaning out its No. 1 at 1340. This well has shown evidences of production, but will probably have to go deeper to get anything substantial.
Drilling at 3350 and showing brown shale is the condition at the Pomona Oil Company's well. Whether or not the Pomona Oil company will ever develop production is a matter of

LA HABRA NEWS
At the meeting of the Farm Bureau Thursday evening, fitting tribute was paid to the late President Edward W. Hibbs, whose tragic death occurred since the last meeting. W. L. York, in a few well chosen words, told of the work Mr. Hibbs had done in the local bureau for the past two years and of the gap his passing has made in this organization that will be hard to fill. Mr. Stubbs eulogized to the departed president and Secretary Pickering, who has been connected in the work with Mr. Hibbs, also expressed the regret of the organization.
Resolutions were passed expressing the sympathy and condolences of the bureau for Mrs. Hibbs and her daughter.
The following committees were appointed: Nominating committee, N. M. Launer, Claude Ridgeway and J. L. Morris, membership, Messrs. Sargent, Frantz, Lutewilier, F. Bishop, Ansley, Sadler, Sulke, Leuhm, Heiden, Wolfe, Reynolds, Carrick and Proud.
