Seventeen Killed, Ten Wounded in Gun Battle at Night
SAN LUIS, Sonora, Mexico, Nov. 30. Seventeen are dead and ten wounded following a sharp battle during the night at Tequiln, capital of Jalisco, according to a message received by the government wireless station here today.
The fight took place between a detachment of state rurales and a company of federal troops.
Among the dead is Captain Jose Padres, commander of the troops.
The fighting lasted three hours. Soldiers ascended to the roofs of buildings on all sides of the rurales barrracks and opened fire, which was immediately returned.
Revolutionary propaganda is said to have precipitated the battle. Each side accuses the other of responsibility.
SEARCH FOR ESCAPED PRISONERS CONTINUES
WEAVERVILLE, Nov. 30. Search for two of the four Folsom prison road camp gang members, who broke out of the Trinity county jail here Monday night, was continued today by a posse in a drizzling rain. The two missing men are Cecil Murray of Merced county, and Alfred Wilterwood of Sacramento. The others, John Gaynor of Los Angeles, and John G. Desboro of San Bernardino, surrendered themselves a few hours after their escape.
The jail break was accomplished, according to the authorities, shortly after supper, when Murray picked the lock of his cell and then unscrewed with a wrench, the door bolts of the cells, where the others were confined.
The four convicts escaped from the road camp at Birbar, Trinity county, last week, but were recaptured and here pending return to Pollsom for trial on charges of escaping from the camp.
L. A. Man Commits Suicide at Riverside
RIVERSIDE, Nov. 30.—H. E. Stewart of Los Angeles ended his life at a local hotel here late yesterday by taking poison. When employees of the hotel broke down the door to his room, he was found unconscious on the bed. He was fully dressed and a bottle of mercury tablets was in his pockets. Physicians were summoned and for more than two hours sought to save him. He died without making any statement.
Stewart was found to have $50 in his pocketbook, and he carried a chap watch. He was well dressed, his hat having come from the Boston store in Los Angeles. Apparently he was about 40 years old.
German Marks Show Strength at Opening
NEW YORK, Nov. 30. — Marks opened today at .0042. This strength in marks is due to the strength in London, where the mark sold at 9880 marks to the pound. The strength in London is generally attributed to the visit of Dr. Walter Ratheneau, former German minister of reconstruction.
County Official Sent To Prison in Arizona
TOMBSTONE, Ariz., Nov. 30.—W. P. Walker, former deputy county treasurer, was sentenced yesterday for from four to ten years in prison for embezzlement of $35,000 of county funds. Walker and his wife signed a deed transferring their home in Tombstone, an automobile and other property to the county.
NEW YORK, Nov. 30.—Benny Leonard outpointed George Ward in their six-round bout for the Bronx hospital benefit here last night. The bout was merely a sparring match until the last round, when the champion waded in and drove Ward to cover.

Bride of Two Weeks Dies From Car Injury
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 30.—Mrs. Marie Barber, 32 years old, a bride of two weeks, who lived at 360 South Hill street, died at the Angelus Hospital last night of injuries she received when she was struck by an automobile at Sixth and Spring streets Saturday. The machine was driven by C. W. Soliday of 1330 South Olive street. After the accident he was taken to the police station and charged with reckless driving. Released on $1,000 bail, be appeared in Police Judge Chambers' court yesterday afternoon where he entered a plea of not guilty and his hearing was set for December 9. Coroner Nance will hold an inquest over the body of Mrs. Barber which was removed to the Moneta Avenue Undertaking establishment.
Auto, Recovered From Thieves, Stolen Again
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 30.—G. Okamoto, 201 East Second street, thinks the well-known jinx is his boon companion. His car was stolen some weeks ago. Police found it day before yesterday and returned it to him. Last night he left it at Jackson street and Central avenue "for just a minute." It was gone when he returned. Police started the search all over again.
