TOTEM POLES FAST BECOMING OBSOLETE Alaska and the northwest are alarmed over the possibility of being shorn of a feature attraction, the totem poles. Large numbers of the carved poles, formerly decorating the native fishing villages from Puget Sound to Podik Island, have been shipped to the east coast of the United States on intercoastal vessels. Last week a hundred of the most famous totems were stowed aboard the steamship Morse and are being shipped to Boston, New York and Philadelphia. At this rate, the historic emblems will soon be gone. Indians will not trade or sell the totems, so that in order to obtain them the tribes are enticed away and in their absence raiders take down and carry away the monuments. These are the quaint relics of century-old tribes, rising skyward and telling, with carved animal heads and inscriptions from forgotten Indian language, folk lore stories of the northland people. On account of the gradual decline in observance of the old native customs, totem poles are no longer erected and the elements are wearing down those left standing. The Arctic club has begun the task of tarring and painting those remaining to keep them in good condition. STREET SUPERINTENDENT'S NO-TICE REQUIRING PAYMENT OF ASSESSMENT.
